Decision Against I he- Sugar Tnifct. New YortK, Jan. Judge Barrett in the Supreme Circuit Court to day rendered a decision in favor of the Attorney General and against the sugar trust. The suit was brought by the people of the State of New York against the North River Sugar Redo ing Company by Attorney General Tabor to forfeit the charter of the North River Coni[ any of tbia city on the ground that it had virtually passed out of evistence by sel? ling out all its stock to the sugar trust com? binations and closing up all its works. TLe action was brought by Attorney General Tabor for the forfeiture and dissolution ol the e-harter of the North River Sugar Rt liuiug Company because it had exceeded its powers and franchises in becomiog a mem ber of tbe'sugar trust. Counsel for defen? dants took an exception to the ruling of the court. Explosion. Fpokank, W. T., Jan. 9.?About one o'eljck yesterday afteraoon an explosion of gimt powder occurred at a place on ?V tshiogtou street, which is being graded, just as James Collins-was preparing a cap for the blast. There were three or four pounds of the powder in a box near w here Collins was preparing the blast. This ex? ploded, horribly mangling Collins, but not killing him outright. Ooe leg was splin? tered by tlyiug rocks and a large hole lorn in the Uesh, four ribs were broken and hi face and eyes blown full of sand. He died shortly afterward. Cause of the explo-ion unknown. A ratal Dispute. Springfield, Mo., Jan. 9?E. A. Mat? thews^ wealthy general merchant of Walnut Shade, Ark., was instantly killed in the White river bottoms, near the Missouri line yeeierd?y afternoon. Matthews was hunt ing deer, and he and a man by the name of Strong fired at a large buck almost slmul taneously. In the dispute which arose over the posseseion of the animal Matthews was brained by Strong, who struck him with the butt end of his rifle. Strong escaped to the woods. Inauguration. The Committee on Light on the memorial of sundry citizens asking for a better quality of gas reported ou the authority of the Superintendent of Gas that the gas furnished for some weeks p*-t was made of two-thirds coal and one-third oil, and the quality is good and up to the standard, which report was laid on the table by tho follow? ing vote : Ayes, Messrs. Agnow, Burke, Goodrich Bryant and Leadbeater?5. Noes, Messrs. Mc? Kenzie and Mr. President? 2. A resolution authorizing the Mayor, Auditor and City Treasurer to bcrrow $12 000 was re? ceived from tho Common Coubi il and their action concurred in. An act locating the building of the Ba'tlmore United Oil Company was referred to the Com? mittee on Street?. On motion it was resolved that rule 1 of the joint rules of the City Council bo amended so as to read, "Tho regular sessions of tho two hc:,rl shall hi held on tho second and fourth Tuesdays of every mouth."
