ROSSER TO RIDE A MI LE.
Among the Virginians who have re?
cently visited Washington there b>s
been uo more striking figure, and none
on whom more eyes were turned in
admiring gaze than the stalwart form
und sunburnt swarthy countenance of
Gener*J Thomas L. Rosser.
A gentleman just from the capital
city fairly goes mto raptures in relat
ing the meeting he had with the
"Prince of Albemarle," as he christen
-d this daring and dauntless hero of a
Qundred desperate cavalry engagements
iu ! he civil war. It was after it had be?
come known that the President had
named bim for a brigadiersbip.
Duriog the interview with our ec
busUstio narrator a newly appointed
othcercame up and asked Rosser where
be was going to have his uniforms
made. "They will cost you a lot of
money," said he. "I have had six suits
.nude and they cost me seven hundred
iollars."
"I will ouly need," responded Ros
r. ''a 11 jnnel shirt which I can buy
uei e any where on the avenue; a pair of
3 loulder straps, aud a string or piece
?i braid around my hat to designate
hm I t in an officer."
"You will have to get a hue horse,
0- neral," continued the interlocutor.
"General Butler has had a four hun
irtd dollar black stallion presented to
im, and other generals have secured
.in** horses."
"Well," replied Rosser, "I have
? line good slock down on my farm;
nut frum what I can learn a horse will
not be the suitable thing in Cuba. I
hink a mule will be best, and it is my
xpectution to ride a mule."
it may be that this Confederate vet
ran with his flannel shirt and string
iTuund his hat bt sides ridiug a mule,
will uot lid exactly in trim to court an
ttuoroii.s looking glass or capei nimbly
in a lady's chamber to the lascivious
pleasing of a lute; but for a Black
Douglass ready lor the devil's own
?vork in desperate encounter commend
us to the "Prince of Albemarle."?

ROBERT E. LEE.
The Londou Spectator, in a review of j
Dr. Heuiy Alexander White's "Robert
E Lee and His Southern Confederacy,"
pay.-; a worthy tribute to the hero of j
the lost cause, aud one which warms
the heart of the southern veterans. It
say?:
"Englishmen of all parties will al?
ways feed a greater interest in Lee than
in Grant, even though politically the r
sympathies may be with the Union. No
more truly heroic figure thau Lee ex
s's in modern history, but it must bo
admitted that, like Washington him?
self, he was essentially of the aristo?
cratic type. There is a singularly pa
thetio side to liia career, which arises
from the fact that this brilliant and de?
voted son of Virginia was, if not at J
heart a uuionist, yet who saw all the
evils in secession and in slavery, which
be was doomed to spend his grandest
? II irts in upholding. In his private
life Robert E. Lee was everything that
we understand by the term 'gentle?
man,' and as such he might meet with
defeat, but never with disgrace. He
whs a profoundly religious man, of the
high Puritan type. After Petersburg
and Appomattox, when he exclaimed
to his beaten soldiers: 'Men, we have
fought through the war together. I
have done my best lor you. My heart
is too full to say more'?down to his |
later serai-retired life as the worthy
president of Washington College, we
note in every recorded word or action
a man of whom we, as well a3 our
American kinsfolk, may be proud, as a
true Anglo-Saxon, worthy of the type
of Cromwell and Hampden."
Discovered by a Woman.
Another great discovery has been
made and that, too, by a lady in this
country. "Disease fastened its clutches
upon her and for seven years she with?
stood its severest tests, but her vital
organs were undermined and death
seemed imminent. For three months
she coughed incessantly and could not
sleep. She finally discovered a way to
recovery by purchasing of us a bottle
of Dr. Kiug's New Discovery for Con?
sumption, and was so much relieved on
taking first dose, that she slept all
night and with two bottles has been
absolutely cured. Her name is Mrs.
Luther Lutz". Thus writes W. C. Ham
nink & Co., of Shelby, N. C. Trial bot?
tles free at E. L. Allen's Drug Store.
Regular size 50c. and $1.00 every bottle
guaranteed. _
Persons leaving tbe city for the sum?
mer can have the Gazette mailed to
them to any address lor 10 cents a week,
the same price at which tbe paper is
delivered in this city.
The editor of the Evans City, Pa.. Globe
writes "One Minute Cough Cure is rightly
named. It cured my children after allI other
r.-modiee failed." It cures coughs, colds and
all throat and lung troubles. Charles O.
