PARK.
Au altogether naked boy of perhaps
12 years and a fat policeman with
clothes to spare furnished joy for the
people in City Hall Park Saturday
evening, at about half-past G o'clock.
The boy had been s-plashiug about in
the pool arouud the fountain. The
park loafers were aroused to comment
with some animation upon the young
raau's bravery and lack of modesty.
The boy was having such a good time
that even women passing through the
park couldn't avoid smiling tolerantly
as they looked the other way.
The big policeman who cune puffiDg
from Park Row took no such amiable
view of the youDg man's crime. For
years small boys have been given to
jumping into the fountain with all their
clothes on.
This particular boy apparently was
taking comprehensive chancts on the
leniency of a "wide opeu administra?
tion."' The policeman looked as wor?
ried as though not ouly morality but
the reputation of the administration
was at stake
A hundred voices warned the caked
boy of the bluecoat's approach. The
policeman shook his club and sputter?
ed commands and admonitions across
the pool. The small boy circulated
around the pool, keeping diametrically
opposite the policeman, who at length
climbed to the margin and threatened
t jump in. The park loafers almost
t leered in the iutens-ity of their joy.
The boy fl d over the margin and
i mied on the asphalt wtlk. One or
\ KO women who were watching the
jame from a distance giggled audibly,
tut they were not enough horrified to
move more than ten steps farther
away. He was such a small boy.
The policeman started around the
pool. The boy kept pace on the other
side until he came to the place where
he had piled his clothes before he
jumped in the pool. He grabbed the
shirt as he went by.
The policeman saw what a mistake
he had made in not seizing theclothiDg
in the beginning.--and hastened after
the rest. A dozen small boys were be?
fore him. Through the crowds of
spectators dodged the naked fugitive
until in a moment's refuge behind a
motherly looking German woman,
who spread her skirt to hide him, he
gained time to pull on bis shirt. He
grabbed hi3 trousers from a friend and
drew them on while the policeman was
telling another bluecoat, who had been
attracted by the crowd, what the trou
ble1 was all about. Then, as they
started around the pool, one going
north and one south, to surround him,
the boy,cool, clean and clothed, danced
backward toward the postofiice twid?
dling his fingers at his nose. And the
bearded, somnolent beggars on the
benches alternately doubled and threw
themselves backward over their seats,
roarirjg with hoarse laughter.? [New
