From the main ..tem of the road numerous branch lines .-treten out into rich sections of the State or to its ports ami commercial centres. From Alexandria, a quaint old city datum back to 174S, hallowed by memories of Washington and oiher famous men, a brauch leads to the west through Arlingtou, Herudon and Leer ourg to Round Hill. This is a popular suburban residence region with many Washiugtoniacs, who find the excellent train service gives them the opportuui ty of doiug busiuess in the city aud liv? ing iu a most salubrious aud attractive rural region. From Manassasa branch runs west and south by way of Stras? burg to Hurrisouburg, passing through an undulating, well-wooded and fertile firming aiction where there are evidences of ihtift on every hand From Calverton there is a short tranch to ?Varreutou, a pretty litlli Virginia town, and the centre of a re ftion famous for its hue old estates and modern stock farms. At Franklin Junction a line leads to Rocky Mount, aud from Dauville the road has orauch to Stuart. At the former place tue chief stem is joined by the Dan? ville and Richmond Division of the Southern Railway, running through Richmond to West Point, passing or the way ibe towns oi Sutherio, South B istou, Burkeville and Amelia Court House. No iravelfT across Virginia on tb< Southern Railway will fad to be im? pressed wiih the extreme b.-auty an?i evu'euces thrift iu the Piedmont sei ? >r; -f the State. B yond if lalverion, then Culp< p?r, the home oi ;i once farii< Ui Minute Men, who it. vduded in their tuembernhip Johu Mar hall, afterwurd Chief Ju-iice of the Uuited Siateu. Twenty miles south of Ctllpeper the Tain rolls across i he historic Rapidan, md -'hortly after Orauge is passed, just neyond which is Mootpelier, where b ttliinpr-e may be caught in passing of ?he home of James Madison, tne fourth President. It is a beautiful region, ail ? >fir, from Alexandria to Cbarlotlesvilie nod then on south, passing North Gal? len, Amtierst and Monroe to Lyucb burg. Leaving this prosperous city the road follows its southwesterly course to n rvill?, passing on the Way Liwyer's Road, with its nearby springs, Frank ..u Junciiou and Ctmibuin. It is upon this portion of the route that the Blue R d re Mountains begin to build up their shapely outlines against the wtsiern horizon. They add a charming variation to the pastoral beauty of the valleys, and form a lovely panorama of which the traveler never tires. Begiuning with agriculture, which a Kreuch savant once calli-i "the Durtur ing breast of the State," it will be worin while to direct attention in more ? ;<? nil to the Old Dominion's breadth of iiches, Here are the farm prod nets ol the State for 1896: Wheat, 5,724,913 bushels; corn, 3S 067,98G;oatp, 8,492,296; rye, 419 S10; potatoes, 3,51)1,474; ha^, o':'.tj.b'S2 tonejtobacco, 57,961,260 pounds. Tne lauds of the state are not only fer? tile, but they are easily cultivated and are contiguous to the best markets. This latter fact particularly adapts the S ate to profitable truck farming. The truck farmers have made a ? iet?t suc 'eseo' potato raising, and tome of ?ht-m IimV" eleared as hign as from ?10. U K)to $.30,000 in a sing e season romthie v.roi> nloLe. Every variety of fruit which will grow iu the temperate zodo flourishes in the Piedmont region. The sunny slopes of the mountains have a pecu? liarly light soil, kept constantly fertile by the decomposition of rocks furnish? ing potash, and perennially moist by numerous springs. This soil is, there? fore, admirably adapted to apples, aud one of the most famous kind?the Al bemarle pippin?has been brought to its highest perfection heie. It is the favorite in foreign mark etc, and usually sells at three dollars or more a barrel on the trees, the buyer furnishing the birrels and doing the Dicking. Xext in importance to the apple comes the grape in line of fruit. A peculiarity noted in the most favored claret-producing vineyards of France is the large admixture of iron iu the .-?oil. This is the characteristic of much ot the soil of this section. The soil aud climatic conditions of Virginia, when compared with the grape districts of Germany and France, present many striking similarities. The average ranges^of the thermometer of this sec? tion and of those at Bordeaux and oth? er vine growing sections of Germany and France are very close together. In this rolling, hilly country, with its calcareous loam, or gravelly, loose soil, with a rocky sub-soil, facilitating self drainage, with exemption from heavy spring frosts and early frost in autumn, with rarely any excess of raiufall in the maturing months of June, July, August and September, are the most favored conditions for the vine. This is shown, as would be supposed, by the luxuriant growth mid tine quality of the native uncultivated grape. A v*in? making industry of no small volume has in consequence prosper* d at several prominent cities of the region, notably at Charlctttsville. The products of the cellars are the pure fermented grape juice. If allowed to acquire the "bouquet" that nae alooe can Rive, they stand successfully a comparison with sonia of the oofed wines of Europe. The Piedmont region is properly called the "fruit belt" of Virginia, and its adaptability to fruits and viues, when properly developed, will easily make it the Itading wine and fruit region of the Uuiot. P-nchee, nectarines, apricots, plums, cherries, applies, pears and quinces are all in? digenous to this section, aud ripen in perfection as they yeld in abundance. All the best tr.riis.-e.-? grow ic Virginia, and as a stock raising and dairy sectioc it ranks anious; the beer, I; is't special? ly adapted for sheep far mint!. But Virginia, in the development of her natural resource*, does not lose sight of the cultivation of tho mind. The most ample and g-nerous provi sioo is mere for a free public school system. The schools are open to all betwi-eo the ages of live and tweu y one, and the minimum school tennis five months iu ? ach \rar. In all of tier edtictttioniil work Virginia is keeping pace with her .-ister Stalfg axd euh-.r-. lug and broad* nit g ber educational s\Htem. Iu 1891 ti.eri- were 7.689 pub lie schools iu successful operation, wi b 7.718 teachers and S42 720 pupils. In 1S'.)7 there were 8 529 public schools in successful operation, with 367,817 pu? pils. The total appropriation tor pub? lic schools in lSi'7 was $1,827,003. s tory of a Slave. To be bound uaud and foot for years by the chains of dise*.-e is th^ worst form of slavery. George D.
