THE GRIDIRON CLUB DINNER TheGridiron club inWashingtonSatur day night gaveja most notable diuner.en tertaining distinguished guests from the United States, Europe and other parts of the world. In the company were the President, Vice-President, membern of the cabinet, the President of Costa Rica, the Premier of Canada, the entire joint bigh American Canadian commis sioD, General Garcia, the most prr ininent officers of the army and navy, Senators; Representatives and many other distinguished men. Mote than one hundred and sixty people were as? sembled in the beautiful dining ball of the Arlington hotel. Toe dinner was in a measure conduct? ed on lines of compliment and honor to men who distinguished themselves on ' both laud and sea in the late war. Great ovation were given to the President, Admiral Scbley and General Sbafter when they arose to speak, while other speakers received most generous con? sideration. Although the dinner was upon the lines indicated, wit and burles? que was cleverly interspersed wiih tht< patriotic sentiment, so that at all times, the guests w? re rever allowed to get away from the Gridiron method of con? ducting a dinner. President Frank H. Hosford presid? ed in an admirable manner. He was very fortunate in bis introduction of prominent guests, and with sentiment, wit und satire conducted the features of the dinner to a most satisfac ory con? clusion. Speeches are always short at Gridiron dinners and there was no ex? ception of this rule Saturday night. Remarks were made by the President, the Vice President, the President oi Costa Rica, Lord Herechell.Sir Wilfred Laurier, Secretary Long, Secretary Hay, Postmaster Genend Emery Smith, Admiral Schley, General Shafter, Gen era! Garcia, Captain Sigsbee, Senator Lodge, Mr. Foster and others. The menu was in keeping with the other features of tbe evening. There were several pages in imitation of army orders beginning with a proclamation of the president of the club calling on volunteers (guests) to assist the regulars .if the club at the engagement in the' Arlington dining room from 8 to 12 o'clock. This was followed by a series of orders in military style, directing the various committees of the club to pre? pare the different features of entertain? ment, and to assume such duty as is usually performed by them. The guests were grouped in divisions of volunteers and ordered to '"keep in the line of fire, during the entire engagement. A map of the battle ground was one of the unique features in which the various divisions were represented as charging through the champagne river toward the table heights where they were sup? posed to have captured ''soon won bill." There were several quip3 in special orders directed at the promi? nent guests of the eveuing, which add ed to the merry feature of the occasion. Among the features was a burlesque investiga ion of the conduct of the war which conveyed some of the more hum? orous fancies of the real investigation. Members of the committee brought in immense stacks of testimony, also largp volume of reports and different exhibits whicb took off some of the gueste and caused great amusement. The report concluded with the finding that there was a war; that Spain got licked and that the Anglo-Saxon stood together. As this was done the American and British flags were unveil6d as a com? pliment to the Canadian members of the joint high commission. Another feature was th.9 appearance of Uncle Sam with a number of colored children Story of a Slave. To be bound hand and foot for years by the chains ofdisea3e is the worst form of slavery. George D. Will-am?, of Manchester, Mich , tells how such a slave was made free. He says: "My wife has been so helpless for five yeais that she could not turn over in bed alone. After using two bottles of Elec? tric Bitters, she is wonderfully im? proved and able to do her own work." This supreme remedy for female dis? eases quickly cures nervousness, sleep? lessness, melancholy, headache, back? ache, fainting and dizzv spells. This miracle working medicine is a godeeod to weak, sickly, run down people Everv bottle guaranteed. O .ly 50 cts. Sold by E L. Allen and E. S. Lead beater'& Sons, druggists.
