Stoddard, rector of St. John's Gburcb, J. r?ey City, who inaugurated a dancing class ruovt-mei.t among churches there aid lust week started n boxing class. This lime he advocates the abolishment of the rule and custom of rnauy churches which re? quires fasting beiore partaking of tbr communion. In the current number of St. John's Bulletin, a weekly paper, through which Rector Stoddard pro? mulgates his ideas of conducting the af? fairs of his pari-h, appeared this notice: Come by all means, but not fasting. A cup of tea can be made with an al? cohol lamp or over the gas in three minutes, and this will prevent head ache or sickness. No service is so de? lightful if one prepares for it. Then: is no rule of the church requiring :hat the communion shall betaken fast? ing. It is merely a fad with high churchmeu There is no warrant for it. It causes weak women to take Imp walKs on cold mornioge with enip y stomachs. The result is that, they su - fer from headaches and in many ic stances faint from sheer weakness. It is a perfect nuisance having women kteioverin their pews every Sunday mon iug because they have overexerted themselves while fustiog. It is not right. It is not in Bccord with the lawe of nature that auch things should be I do not recommend that a hearty meal be eaten before the communion, as much food leaves a person ia a gross, carnal, unspiritual condition. 1 do say, however, that enough food should he taken to sustain the body." Thlkgs One Girl Has Eaten.?A remarkable case of abnormal appetite has come to the attention of physicians of Lynn, Mass. The s??erer is a girl agout 16 years old. She is how in gieat pain and it is not expected that her life can be saved. During the time she ha been afflicted she has eaten books, newspapers, shoemaker's wax, starch and other things, and Sunday she devoured a pouud. uf roasted codec. The first symptoms of the devolepment of ] the ailment came while she was read? ing. First she began tearing corner off the pages of a book and finally she ate entire pages from a book after she had read them, so that by the time she finished the story little but the covers was left. In five weeks she read twelve novels and ate every one of them. S?e was employed in a shoe factory and it was not uncommon for her to get pos session of a quanity of wax and eat it with apparent relish Her consumption of laundry stBrch was only limited by the supply. The climax came Sun day when she disposed of about a pound of coffee. After this she became so ill that physicians were called in. The young woman is not insane. Up to yesterday afternoon, when she had a delirious turn, she was in full possee ion of her senses and knew the danger which threatened her if she continued her practices. Fixe Losses Heavy.?The close of this year will see much heavier fire losses recorded than last year. The New York Board of Fire Underwriters' books show that last year's fire losses amounted to $3,010,190 05 for the full j twelve msnths, and for ten months ! $2,473,112.07. This sum has been ex i ceeded tnis year by $400,000 for the I same ten months, making the total losses to November 1, 189S, about j $2,S73,112.07. Story of a Slave. To be bound band and foot for years by the chains of disease is the worst form of slavery. George D. William?, of Manchester, Mich., tells how such a slave was made free. After using two bottles of Elec- j trie Bitters, she is wonderfully im? proved and able to do her own work."
