[Entered at the Postoffice of Aiexandria, Vir? ginia, as aecond-elas* matter.l LETTER FROM ELKTON. [Correspondent af the Aiexandria Gazctte.] Elkton, Va., 8ept. 'J.? The proper order for arranging a vacation has been followed by your correspondent in pass ing from Atlantic City by the btoad oceau to this comfortable and beautifully situated hotel in the far famed Valley of Virginia, with tlie noble ramparta of Masaanutton to tbe west and the raystic line of the Blue Ridge rising along the east, and shutting us in from the old tide water section of tbe State. Before taking up our abode here we spent a few davrt in the vicinity ol White Post at "Renvenue" the hospitable home of Captain David Meade, aituated in one of the fairest and most fertile parts of the Va'iley. While there we had the pleas uie ol some delightful drives with the captain through tbatbeautiful and inter esting country. We saw ouce more '?Mountain View," a sacred place to all those who owt allegiance to the Episco pal Churcb, aa the home of its great bishop, the Right Rev. William Meade, who was the restorer of the fortunes ol tbat church after tbe revolution in the diocese of Virginia, the defender of its purity, and the tounder of the Tbeologi cal Seminary in Virginia. With words very similar to those the record ot his noble lit'e is summed up on his tomb in the quiet cemetery looking towards the east on the brow of Seminary Hill. As we drove along, the Sunday morning of our stay, on our way to churcb, the captain ibowed us taacornaf ol "iloun tain View" where once etood a gate tbiough which tlie bishop so often en? tered uj.on the public road on his way to the same sacred place, Christ Churcb, Millwood, wbither we were now goinir, of which the bishop was so long tbe venerated rector and aodpaator. We alao oaaaed''Boeoey'' tbe birthplaeaofthe late Dr. Kialocb Nalaotl, loriiierly 81 bonored profcaaoi ofthe Theologii-al Seminary, we bave just mcntioued, near your chy. Tlu.c doaa aot peraait aa to tall of the numer oua beautiftil aod well-kept eatatea around Millwood. We moat, bowaro, mention' l8aratOga>" the historic home of Qeoeral Morgaa, said to bave been built l.y Heaaiafl aoldiara under tbe geo aral'a direction. IWing frooi Baratoga on one ol our hripe we took a moat ebarmiog park-lika drive, formiag ? prirate road, iborteniag, bowaver, the diataocebetweea Millwood aod Benvenoe aud went by tbe home ot Captain Wil? liam Carter, the gallant sohlier during the storming daya of civil strife and now the poet of the vulley, whose "heboes ot ihe Glea," lately published (many of them already k'uowu and eateemed iu vtrse), will awell the tide of romance and song that stirs the heart of all who behold thia land of beauty, aud listen to its tales of love and cbivalry. But at the home of the poet-aoldier we could not liuger, so we aped on behind our trusty steed to the "Post" and "Benvenue." Another old home, "Luoky Hit," adjoining "Benvenue," must be noted in our letter. This waa built by Col. Richard Kidder Meade, oneof Washington'aaides and an mti mate aud trusted friend of the great leader. Like "Saratoga" Ita maaaiye unadorned walla of stone reflectthe aolid character aud aiuiple lile of its honoreJ builder. Aluioat evcryone knows that tlie village of White Post received ita uauied from the White Post which pointed the way to "Green way Court" the aeat of that ro manic figure and extensive landed pro prietor, Thomas Lord Fairfax whose renndns now rest beneath the Episcopal Church which he eiidowed in Wiuches ter. The "White Post" ia carefully preserved by the inhabitants and is an ohject of intcrest to all visitors. While at the Post we had the pleaaure of meel ing again, among others, Dr. Thomaa M. Lewis, Capt. David Meade, jr., of the Sixth Clark Cavalry, and the vener able Mr. William Kennerley, with a number of visitors from King George who seemed to enjoy the change from td-water to the tnountainn. Elkton is a good-sized village on the Norfolk and Weatern Railroad an hour'a di.tance from Luray, on the north, and Basic City, on the aouth, and is the preaent terminus of the (hesapeakeaud Weatern Railroad, con necting it with Harrisonburg and pointa beyond. There ia a fully equipped modern tnnnery, a stave factory anu aome other manulacturing eatablish ments here. We noticed the statement in the Gazette the other day, that about hall the sunnly of mancanese now used came lrom Virginia. So with that add ed interest iu company with two lriends we took a walk to the mang mee mineaand washeriea aituated on llance'a Mountain near the town. The shafu are of considerable depth and the trncks used for bnnging the ore to the surlace are worked by both mules and a steam engine. A ahort narrow gauge track for other trncks, pulled by i??le?, conveys the cre from tbe upper washery to the lower one near the Norfolk and W eatern road whence it ia ahipi-ed chiefly. to Pittaburg.aowe were told.
