The steamer River Queen, with about 200 eolored excursionistaaboard, colliiled with a barge in tow of the steam barge Dauiel K. Jackson a shortdistance north ol this citv sbortly before nine o'clock r? irday ahrbt andtheexcursion steam? er waa beached near the Magazine wharf, on the Marvland side of the river, to avoid sinking in the deep water. The River Queen waa on her way down the river at the time of the accident. There wa- no panic. At an early hour yester? day morning the steamer Pokanoket took most of the excursionists oft the River Queen and carried them to Washington. Some of the eolored people refused to re main on the steamer during the uight, and wading ashore proceeded to Wash? ington via Anacostia. The River Queen remained on the mud until 9 o'clock yesterday morning. An exceptionally bigh tide came in, and with the assistance ol the Randall line steam? er Wakefield the boat was pulled oft' and she proceeded to her wharf in Washington under her own steam. She will be repaired immediately. The steamer Jackson, with the lumber barge in tow, was connog up the river, Capt. Hart, of the River Queeu, said that there were lighta on the Jackson, but no v ay of telling that the Jackson had a tow. The Jackson gave a signal to keep off, but when Captain Hart thought he bad cleared the steamer he awimg iu with the River Queen, only to diacove* that be was upon the lumber barge C.tpt. Hart, himself, took the wheel at that moment, but was unable to prevent the accident. Tbe issuing of permits to children to enter the public achools will be com menced at the Opera House tomorrow and be continued on Wednesday for white and on Thursday and Friday for colored children. The report that some of the girls of Lee School or other girls who wished to atudy the higher branches would be ad mitted to the Washington School is in correct. Two years ago a committee was appointed to consider the advisabil ity of tiie matt?r and girls wishiug to enter the boys' school were requested to gtve their names and addresxes to the Superintendent. Daniel friplett, a well-known and reapacted colored realdent, died at hia home, 620 north i'itt street, Saturday evening. The deceascd was ii years old. A general fight occurred Saturday evening between a nuinber of eolored etnployee of the brick yards in the Fort Runyon neighborhoood in which some eolored womon took part. James Evan's, one of the combatants, was killed, and it is allegod that two eolored woinen?Mary M. Tillman and Mary II. Johnson, her daughter,? committed the homicide. Sherill Palmer arreated the two women and today Coroner Ash ton held an inquest and the prisoners were sent on to court. Contract Awarded. The contract tor the big railroad yards to be constructed just north of this city, and which are to be the largc-st i 1 the country, has been awarded to Messrs. Reiter, Curtis A Hill, con tractors. The yard, as beretofore stated, is to be used by the six railroads centreing here, and the work is to be commenced at once and pushed to com pletion as rapidly as possible.
