One of tho coachea ol the Georgia Southern antl Florida passenger train coming from Jackaonville to Valdosta, (ia., Sunday night, waa the aeene of one of the bloodiest chapters that has been written in the history of the Okefinokee region. In a general melee, a white man named Jacksou Duncan waa stabbed to death, two negroes were killed, and Marshall Duncan waa stabbed in several places, and either thrown from the mov ing train or fcll off. The men who did the killing, according to reports, are Charles and Hillary Altman, who rcaide near Baxter, Fla. Tne killing waa the result of a drunken row, preceded by a h.Dg period of bad ieeling between the Duncana, who areprominentnaval atores men, aud the Altmanaand other citizens of that place, who appear to bave been reaeutful of the development which the still and the mill had brought to that scetion of the country. The Duncana have stated a number of tiraes that they were alwaya having trouble with their neighbors, who persisted in trespassing npon their land-*. On Sunday a lajge orowd of Moniac and Baxter people went to Jacksonville to spend the day. Moet ol the erowd were in an intoxica ted condition Sunday night when they boarded the train. W. M. Duncan, iather of the younger Duncan, waa in the crowd, but he and his sons are said to have been sober. The six or eight men who made up the other faction were very boisterous, after the train polled out from Jacksonville- and picked a (juarrel with a negro named Jim Lilev, who worked for the Duncana. Like a llash, Charley Altman, whoac caaed the ne^ro of being in <lebt to him, drett hii dirk and Btabbed the negro lo the beart The negro fell belweeu tbe aeata and died Inataotly. Then Jackaon Duncan remoustrated with Altman, aud Hillary Altman drew his dirk aad stabbed Duncan, who died in B niiniile or so. Marshall Duncan was also stabbed, and was either pushed from the train or fell 0& U? ?"* hadlj in jurcd bv the briusc- 06 WMtaiaed by the fall and alao by haif a doten knife wounda he received. Anothei negro was killed ia the melee. The two Alt maiis alipped frora the car to the plat formaud jonped from the train as it ilowed dowD, but got npon the reai aad. \V. ht. Duncan in the meantime bad drawn his rerolver, and was bunttag for the Altmana in all of the eoaehea. A MaeOD baatlhaii player waa hidden in one of tbeeloseta, and Duncan aupposed hiin to be the murderer of hia son. After liring several tbota at the door ho smashed it in with an axe, but the Macon man had escaped through the window to the platform of the car and into the ladiea' coach. Yester? day morninsr, according to reports, the row was renewed between the Duncans aud the partiea ofthe other side. Frienda ofthe Altmana, it ia aaid, met at their house, and went to Baxter, where a fusilade occurred between them and W. If. Duncan and another younger son. Wr. M. Duncan was shot through the fleshy part oi his stomach twice and his son waa shot through the hand. Diapatchea recieved in Macon, Oa., aavs that Dcputy tSheriff Tbrift was fired up'on by a crowd at Baxter, Fla., when he attempted to arrest the two Altmans. Citizens prevailed upon the deputy to make no further attempt at arreat until the sherift arrives. More trouble is ex pected when it is attempted to take the Altmans to pnson. A party ot about fifty friends are Munding guard with loaded Wincheatera around the housc in Baxter, ITa., in which nre Charles Altman and Hillary Altman. Tbese friends of the Altmans aay that the sherilTor military will take the men over their dead bodica. lt is reported that a military company from Jacksonville haf been ordered to the scene. Chapelle Vistt* Pope. Archbishop Chapelle, of New Orleans, papal delegate to Cuba and Porto P.ico, was received in audience by Pope Pius yesterday. The Pope exhibited the kindliest interest in the Archbishop and expressed great pleasure at making his personal acqiiaintance. The audience laated IS niinutes and waa concerned with matters relating mainly to Arch? bishop Chapelle's duties in Cuba and Porto liico. Archbishop Chapelle re? ported that on the eve of his departure from Cuba President Palma, whose re latioua with the church are of the most pleasant character, requested him to pre sent his individual respectsto the Pope, and also to express his desire for the maintenance of the best understanding between Cuba and the head of the Uoman Catholic Church. Pope Plus expreaaed his gratificationat themessage from thc President of the Cuban repu j lic and asked Archbishop Chapelle to c ?nvev his thanks to President Palma and his blessintr upon all the iahabitaiits uftheisland. "After the report of the Arehtliocese of New Orleans had been submitted Archbishop Chapelle preaent ed the Pope with an album entitlcd ?'Catholiel&i Orleans" The album ooataiaa 1M photographs of churches aud R -man Catholic institutions of New Orleans. Virginia Troope. The Manassas correspondent of the Richmond Times I >i-patch BBya i It may inu realJVirginians t. know that regularof ficers think theaverageheightand weight of the Virginia soldiers is under that of the men from anv other State represent ed in the maneuvres. The Massachusetts men were said t > be the largest. This is the opinion of an officer of the regular army. There is not a dotibt tbat the Virginia soldiers, however, were the equals, if not the superiors, ofthe sol? diers ofauv other State in bearing and there is no'doubt tbat they were not sur pie sed by tho*cof any other State in en durance ofthe fatigue ofthe maneuvres. Ofcourse there were somestragglers, but the nnmber was smail as compared with that from other regimenta of eqtial size. The discipline and training of the regi meut was evidenced by its being selected every day as the advance of the Fourtfa ilrigade. This was the poat of honor. The Sixteenth regulars, which marched behind the Virginians, have declared on every occasion that they have never fol lowed men who marched faster or who could stand it better. iHins Welghed U-ss Tfian 2 I'ounds.
