OBICKEN THIEVES AT WOKE.
Jesse -Stansbury, who lives in Mary?
land, near Shepherd's wLarf a night

traced the thieves to thia city where be
located his properly io the rooms occu?

McGuen. Ten of the chickens were
lying headless in a bag aod the other
two were being fried this morning for
breakfast by these two men. McCuen
denies his guilt, but Johnson says tbat
the former rowed him across the river in
a boat aod brought him back with tbe
plunder. Though he claims to be an
innocent man to the transaction tbe
fact tbat chickens were found in a
chimney in his room and tv being fried

EXCURSION OF DRAMATIC CLUB
Nat ;r > could not have shown herself
in dazz'ing splendor to a greater extent
than today. The sun came from behind
the eastern hills this morning and smiled
with pleasure on tbe social and benevo?

complimentary exursion to Marshall
Hall. The committee worked with a
zeal characteristic of the fountain head
from which this body sprang and the
day all the way through has been one of
surprises in the abundance ol amuse?
ments 'urnished. Tbe races took place
aa predicted and were witnessed by
thousands of people on land and water.
On the arrival of the last boat tonight

A HEALTHY CITY.
Two-thirds, or e'ght months, of the
calendar year has passed and if the
deatb rate is accepted as a fair index by
which to judge the health of a commu?
nity, Alexandria is indeed a healthy
city. It is claimed by those wbo pro?
fess to be well informed, and at the same
tim-o conservative in statement, that there
has her uno decrease, but an appreci?
able increase in our population in late
of years. If such claims are susceptible
proof, then Alexandria's death rate be?
ing low, tbe general health of our city is
good. During the eight months ending
August gi, 1904, the deaths oceutring
in the city were 241; in li'07 they num
berel 240, and for the eight months
ending August 31, 1908, they number
202. _

INTERESTING SUIT.
The Buit of the Un.t.*d States of
America vb. Theodora Johnson, in the
Circuit Court of the United Stets for
the Eastern Dhtrlct of Virginia, will be
beard at the next term in tola city. The
government is claiming ownership over
met ty feet of ground on the eastern
side of Hie military road leading from
Rosslyn to Fe rt Myer, where it passes
through the Drain property, and in this
claim is a considerable part of tbe lot
owned by Theodore Johnson. Mr.James
E. Olementa is at'.oroey fer the defen?
dant, and today filed bis answer to the
bill, and in it he alleges that tbe govern?
ment hu no title to anything under the
deed from Charlotte L Drain and hus?
band of date September 30th, 1902, ex?
cept ihe eastern half of tbe military
road being a strip twenty feet wide
measuring from the center of enid road?
bed.
Counsel further contends that the act ol
Congress approved June 28th, 1902, ap?
propriates 94*600, "lo purchase tbe land
forming the roadway of tbe aailitary
road where aaid land has not been dedi
cat d to the public. The western half
of said road bael been dedicated, bo
the government .Jcould ouly buy the
remaining one-half belonging to the
! said Charlotte L Drain; and uno au?
thority is given in the act to purchase
j any land outside of tbe military road
j proper, the government could not have
title to the strip of land of abont twenty
feet from the r .ad in the Drain
property.
Mr. Clements says tbat if tbe govern?
ment's contention should prevail, and
this twenty feet taken off of the 52 lota
of the Drain subdivision, it wonld prac?
tically render these lots valueless, and
really damage the property known aa
"Radnor Heighis" from $20,000 to
$25,000; and the only recourse would
be to apply to Congress for relief and
compensation.
