HOWARD W. SMITH, President Nad Treasurer WILLIAM A. SMOOT ... Vlee-PreBloent MICHAEL T. DWYER Editor Entered at the Postofflce at Alexan dria, Virginia, as second class matter. LITTLE ONES TAKES RISKS Two or three minutes In-fore the alarm of fire was sounded this morn ing a well known citizen stopped a representative of the Gazette on King street and expressed his con cern for children, often small speci mens, who are allowed to operate automobiles in this city. He told of one little girl he had passed who , was in an automobile containing several children of her age. He stop ped to see if the child really intend ed operating the machine, which she seemed preparing to do. and was surprised to see her take the wheel and start off with her little friends. In less time than it takes to tel! it, and while the words of our friend were still in our ears the motored fire apparatus was rushing up King street at railroad speed. The chil ren must have got out of the way as no accidents occurred. It is often noticed that little boys, white and cclorcd. operate automo biles and auto trucks in this city. During the pasc few years several accidents to automobiles have occur red, some resulting in the deaths of persons on sidewalks, supposed to be removed from danger. What has happened before is likely to happen again. It is an old observation that angels take care of helpless little ones. Heavenly visitors may at times avert dangers, seen and unseen, but in this day distressing accidents to children in the larger eiti:^ are mutiplyimv daily. They are likely to occur in Alexandria. WELCOME TO COLORED SOLD IERS The colored residents of this city yeste rdav afternoon accorded a hearty welcome home to the male members of their race who went ? across the sea and engaged in the war for Liberty. There was a large turnout of colored folks and the man ner in which they evinced their ap preciation of the services rendered by Alexandria's quota of colored' men was animating to many white residents who were wont to rejoice i with Ihem. While the i.ageant was not im posing, it was ex animo (from the soul), and appealed more than a Ro man triumph to the thoughtful. One beautiful early Sunday morn ing, two years ago, virtuially all the colored people of the city," old and young, escorted these ?'members of ; their rate who had beWi ^called to join the colors to railway station, and bade them Gcd speed. Three and four year old children marched in parade on that occasion. Yesterday afternoon it was their ?' pleasure to welcome them home af ter they had performed their duty ! with the American Expeditionay ' Force. j During the civil war the appear ance of negro soldiers wearing the biu? brought forth little commenda tion from people south of Mason and Dixon's line. But things have mater ially changed during the past half a century or more, and colored men in khaki, who have shown their love of country, receive the support due sol diers. RAILROAD STRIKES For six years the community, the whole nation, has been in terror of a strike of railroad employees that : hculd paralyze the business of the country and cut off food from the dibs. First cne association and then another, in one regional area or all over, have threatened to tie up ir.nsportation if they did not get what they wanted.
