"Is it .quite nocospnry that "Fortcsouo"
should bo whlskorlcssV" I askod, faintly.
"Why, juilgo for youwolf; how a
I) ovdorbtl va , looks with them ? The
worst of it is," sho added, "that when I
undertook the natt of 'Maria' it was
with the supposition that you would be
tho'Fortescuc.' "
Those who are acquainted with the
Hollo of Penzonee, must he told that
"Fortcsquo" is the lover of "Maria,"
and soA'oral half romping, half-armor-ous
scenes are enacted between them;
knowing this, if they had heard how
Ada hesitated, and seen how site blush
ed as she spoke, they would not wonder
that my breath came short, and a sing
ing arose in my ears. My left hand
closed upon the "lingers which wero form
ing that bridge; my right arm stole
around her form : I felt intoxicated by
the magnetic halo which lloated about
her hair.
"Take care," she said; "I cannot
make mv stroke if you come to close."
I kneV there was such a thing as
tli rowing away a race by making the
running too early.
"Ilityourown h-h-b-ball in the exact
centre, and rather high." I stammered,
"and vou vou would not like O'Bri
that js, any other fellow to to take that
uart. in fact."
I declare, I won't answer you !" she
cried. "Of course. 1 know you. an nov-
er saw the most of the others before, and
such things make all the difference, you
know. To ue Kissed, even in mauo oe
lieve, by a man one has seen for the first
time a week before, makes one feel ner
vous: but there!" Ecstasy! she classed
O'Brian with the men "slie Unci only
known for a week !" And then she had
not noticed him at all those splendid
names.
And she had not iced and remembered
mo.
"Oh, that It was not mako-bcllovo
Let us rclierse our parts."
"AVhcre is the use she murmured, "if
vou will not make a small sacrilicc ?
And she looked so deliciously shy and
conscious, that I cried in rapture: "I'll
doit!"
"What! part with these?" and she
laid n llncer more beautiful than .Auro
ra's on one of my whiskers.
"Yes."
"You must give me one as a memento
Oct up ; there is some one certainly com
ing."
It was Miss Winton and Captain Sey
mour, who came just in time to prevent
a lormai oiler, l went on lo my bed
room, locked the door, opened my dress
ing case, too.it out cissors anil razor, aim
negan me cireauiui tasK.
Infatuated, mad that I was, I insert
ed the expanded points of the fatal
shears, gave a convulsive clip, and in
half a minute the carefully tended
growth of years fell to the dressing ta
ble. I cannot bear to recall how 1 look
ed at that moment. As nuicklv as pos
sible, I cutoil'thc companion whisker,
anu men snavcii my cnecK clean, un
my way clown stairs, 1 met Sir Thomas
who stopped, stnrcd, and asked my
name. He did no rcognize me. Young
Winton, who was always late, Avas
breakfasting when I entered the morn
ing-room, flo dropped a cup of hot
cqllee over his knees, and neiirelyjehonk
ed. Leaving him in his misery, I encoun
teredayounglady visitor, who crammed
her pocket hankerchief into her mouth
and lied.
But it would be tedious to recount the
ellcct I produced upon eacli individual
member of the household. All. even
the.faithless Ada, laughed at my appear
ance, except U'JJnan, wno looked upon
my translormation lrom a purely urn
matic point of view. Others were iii
vided as to whether I most resembled a
plucked fowl or a recently shorn sheep
but the veritable amateur said: "Kure he
will make an elegant 'Fortcscue,' " and
stuck to mat view ot me question.
The company soon got used to the alter
ation, and the dramatic business now
went us smoothly as a hand passed over
my chocks, l mm me intoxicating priv
ilege, the tantalizing element in wliich
was tempered by nope, oi making sic
oncl hand lovo to Ada in daily rehears
als, till at last the the day of positive
performance arrived.
Wo all knew our parts, hut whether
we acted them well or not, it is dilllcult
to judge: our audience was bound in
common politeness to lie pleased, and
the flattering applause and profuse con
gratulations we received con not bo
counted or much. At any rate, every
body seemed delighted, and the whole
alltur was counted a success.
"When a do which lias cost some
time, thought, and labor in the prepara
tion, is over, a heavy weariness and de
pression is apt to weigh upon the prin
ciple actors, and tills, T believe, witli
the majority of the company assembled
at Winton llnll.
But I felt nothing of this. What
were private theatricals or balls, past or
future, to mo? Menus to an end, one
end Ada. How could my mind be
cloudy as she smiled upon me? How
feel depressed when such hopes elevated
me?
On the morning following the per
formance, I awoke enrly witli a llrm de
termination to turncoiniccourtsliip into
earnest, and force a plain yes or no from
her that very day. To lie in bed with
such a prickle in the pillow was riuite
impossible, so got -up, dressed, and
went for a walk. On passing through
the garden on my way back to breakfast
I uecamo aware mat somebody ciso was
also in high spirits, lor a well-known
voico behind tlio shrubbery was singing
The Pins in the Morninn: and on turn
ing tlio corner of a path which brought
mo into a little open dell sacred to rho
dodendrons, I came upon O'Brian, with
his hat stuck on tho back of his head
executing a pas sue! to a vocal acconi,
panianiont.
"Ah! he cried on seeing me, "sure
you hnve cnught mo making n fool of
myself. But it isngood tliingmy moth
er's only son has dono for mo this morn
ing. Congratulate mo, my hoy !"
"Certainly," said I, fooling a little
sickly, "What on?"
"I nm going to ho married to the pret
tiest little angel that over wore boots
and has n nlco little sum all at hor own
disposition into tho bargain. Woop!"
It was too true ; ho had stolen a march
upon me. I left Winton two hours af
terwards. Thank you ; yes, my whiskers aro
gradually recovering, and I expect to
bo ablo to walk out In daylight uy an
other month or so. At presoiit tlioy are
