there not, he wonders, something
i i. d'.- wonderful world which will
1 tip the impaired vision or brighten
the nlurred and misty page? At last,
t .i r years ol study ami prayer ami ex
j riment just as his own sight isgrow
fii dim and poor .Spina produces the
lirst i,iir of spectacles ever seen in this
world.
spina's invention wax regarded as a
v ritable godsend. It was described
. ml commended in the pulpit. At his
Miii s St, Clare hung his head in
-ham-1, and from that day to this lias
had but few worshipers or believers.
l'he invention of spectacles removed
i tie of the greatest terrors of old age. 1 1
opt i i d many a sadly closed book, ami
si-t many an idle pen in motion. It put
medics into old willing hands, and
tin u with happiness into old hearts.
It hardly seems possible, and yel it is
undoubtedly tho fact, that nwuiU'iml had
to do without speetaclestill neartheend
oi the thirteenth century. How Paul
would have prized a pair of spectacles !
How did Methuselah get along with
out spectacles dining the Inst two or
three hundred years of his life'.' Jive
her.-elf, in her old age, must have felt
the want of spectacles. Do tjuiney
somewhere says that the ancients went
to bed early, because Ikcir mother earth
could not allbrd to give them candles.
1 dare say the ouug folks of antiquity
would have appreciated " long sixes."
But to tho elderly people whose sight
was poor they would have been a cruel
aggravation, ine old gentleman could
not have read his book, nor the old lady
have plied her needle, by tho candle's
"mild light." No candles! no novels!
no newspapers! no spectacles ! Ah, that
antique world of which poets fable so
finely limv have been a glorious world,
but
"lietter littv rears of Euroi.c than a evdc of
Cathay 1"
Spectacles were a new thing in Chau
cer's day, and J love to believe that the
old poet used them when writing the
Canterbury Tales. Shakespcaro could
have said with his own Benedick, "1
ean see yetwithout spectacles." But if
he had lived to a ripe old age, he would
probably have written new Jlamlets
and Macbeths by their help. Good old
Bishop Hall wore glasses, and wrote a
pious mcditatioli on them. Swift fool
ishly vowed never to use spectacles.
Bough old Johnson, though he did not
wearthem, mentioned the name of their
inventor with reverence as one ol tlie
greatest benefactors to society. Burke
rarely appeared in public without glasses.
In ("Jillruy's caricatures, you see this
mighty rhetorician with spectacles on
nose, and arms uplifted, hurling a thun
derbolt of eloquence at the members of
the opposition.
If Spina, or somebody else, had not
invented spectacles, Disraeli could not
have written "The Curiosities of Liter
ature." Wordsworth, in his later years,
was greatly beholden to glasses. When
Emerson saw him, in 1883, he was dis
figured with green goggles. "i'was
through a pair of green spectacles that
Thackeray looked upon life, and saw and
noted the sins and sorrows of "Vanity
Fair." Franklin's spectacles, as some
biographer or other has remarked, wore
the spectacles oi a pnuosopher. They
were not such spectacles as were sold by
the opticians of London and Paris, but
were made, expressly for him, according
ton theory of his own. In travelling,
he carried two pair of glasses; "one for
reading, tho other for surveying distant
objects." Franklin could havo written
eloquently and appreciatively of spec
tacles. They were tho best 'and most
trusted friends of his vigorous and beau
tiful old age. lfe evidently took prido
in 'thcm, and loved to appear in the
gay salons of Paris with "tho spectacles
of 'wisdom on his nose." Atlantic
Monthly,
CriiKKonllYDitoi'iiomA. Anything
calculated to cure tho victim of a mail
dog's bite should bo proclaimed all over
the land, for it is a most terrible precur
sor of death and wo hopo all the news
papers in tho country will repent the fol
lowing item : " Vouatt, tho well-known
veterinary surgeon, who lias been bitten
eight or ton times by rabid animals, snvs

vent hydrophobia in tho bitton person
