If (ho l)2d ann Ivor.-ary of American
independence was not celebrated enthus
iastically in St. Albans on tho 4th it
was celebrated with spirit and satisfac
tion, we think. There was a largo turn
out, and the park and streets pro.-entcd
aory animated appearance. Tho ex
treme heat of tho day induced more
(pilot than is usual upon "the day wo
celebrate," and gaily dressed groups
chatted, reclining under tho shadoof
spreading trees Hue Tityrus under his
beach, and thanking the goddess of
Liberty for their otitim.
The programme published in our pa
pe on Friday was carried out in foim if
not exactly in time. Tho Water Witch
tire company, of Northfleld, with their
tiro engine beautifully decorated, came
in early' in the uiornintr. Doctor
d'eorge Xichols, Secretary of State,
is Foreman of this company, Fiank
V. Clatur Fint Assistant, and Mr.
Robbins Second Assistant. Our own
companies, Washington No. I, and Fron
tier Xo. 2, headed by the St. Albans
Hrigadc Band, marched down to the de
pot in tine style to receive the
Xorthlleld company. A very beautiful
decorative feature of each engine con
sisted in placing two little girls, elegant
ly dre-t-od, upon them, amid the wreaths
and banners. Those on Washington
Xo. 1 wore children respectively of
Mr. Swett, foreman of the company,
and Mr. Xorwich, first assistant ; those
on Frontier Xo. 2, of Mr. J. P. Fisk,
foreman, and Mr. K. Camp ; and those
on the Water Witch were Miss Alice
Fastman and Miss Rosanna Mack, of
St. Albans, and a little son of Mrs.
Rates, of Xorthfield wan put in as an ap
propriatc "thorn amid roses."
The Plattsburg lire company, lloricon
Xo. :t. came over bv the new ferry, but
without their engine, as the authorities
of that place would not consent to its
absence. The Pittsburgh Band accom
panied them, and gave us some excel
lent music. The Green Mountain Mar
tial Band, from Fairfax and Westford,
was present also, and elicited abundant
admiration.
As there was but one company present
from abroad, with an engine, tho eon-
test for the moderate prize ofl'ered was
of course impossible; but the prize of
$100 was given, nevertheless, to the
Water Witch, and the one of SAO to tho
gentleman representing lloricon Xo,
though it was won, we understand, by
Frontier Xo. 2, in a friendly competition
outside the regular nroirrammc. In this
competition each company used .'501) feet
of hose, and threw as follows:
Washington Xo. l.ofSt. Albans, 151
feet 11 inches.
Water Witch, Xo. 2, of Xorthfield,
150 feet.
Frontier Xo. 2, of St. Albans, 15(i feet.
The Xorthfield firemen were enter
tained at dinner by the Frontiers, at
the Wolden House. The Pittsburgh
company, of which Mr. John Smith isi

During the firing of the military sa
lute a premature discharge of the Xapo
leon 12-pounder occurred, which fortu
natoly resulted in no great injury. The
rammer of the piece was sent across the
park, severing a limb of good size from
one of the trees, and "entering the base
ment window of tho post-olllee. One or
two serving tho piece woro also stunned,
but received no severe injuries. The
cause of tho explosion was tho insertion
of tho cartridge without sponging out
tho piece.
A largo number of people were present
in town, and seemed to enjoy tho time
acrecably and quietly. It cannot be
mid that the celebration was a very jub
ilant or enthusiastic all'air, and so far its
the tournament is concerned it was a

antlyjnnd on the whole, the celebration
was worth all it cost, probably, and is
