VEEMONT DAJLXY TKANSCRIPT, OCTOBER 21, 1S6S.
C I RCULAR . The attention of Town Superintendents, Teachers, and others interested in the cnu.o of popular education in tho State of Vermont is called to Section 2, Act No, !2, of the Lhwh of Vermont for the year 18G0, which rends as fol lows : Section 2. Thu Hoard of Education nro hereby authorized, and it is made their duty, on or belorc July 1, 18(57, and on or before said date every lifth year thereafter, to select a list of such grammars, geographies, arithmetics, his tories of this Statu and the United States, phil osophies, algebras, readers and spellers, not exceeding ono book of ii kind in each branch, as they shall deem best suited for instruction and use in the district schools In thU State, in each of said branches : and shall cause tho list so selected to bo published in all the news apers Jmblishcd in tlie State, during tho month of (anuary next following the making of such se lection ; and also to be inserted in each school register issued after one )onr from tho nmkin? of such selection ; which list, so selected, shall be acid remain authoritative and i hiding upon the Board ol Education, superintendents and teachers, and during llvu years from and alter November 1, 1SCS, and each ilvo years thereaf ter ; and superintendents and tendinis shall recommend for use in tho district schools, as new books shall become necei-sary for instruc tion in tho branches named, no other than tho books included in said 1 iht so selected and pub lished, Tho following is an extract from tho lieport ot tho Board of Education, for the year 1807, pago 8 : Mitchell's First Lessons, Primary, ami Inter mediate Geographies were adopted, lor these reasons, in brief; thu simplicity and clearness of tho text, the gradual nod constant advance ment from the primary truths to tho higher de partments of geographical knowledge, the con ciseness and completeness of the definition, the elegance and accuracy of the maps, the at tractiveness of the pictorial illustrations, and the uniform method of treating topics that are similar to each other. Since the adoption of these books, the publishers have taken meas ures to prcpaio a special edition of the Interme diate Geography for use in the schools of Ver mont. This edition will contain a new quaito map of tho State, engraved on copperplate ; and four pages of letter press and questions, relat ing to the geogranhy of Vermont !lo be prepar ed by Rov.l'liiiv II. White. It is believed that this feature, while it is not to increase the cost of the books, will maturiillv increase its value and the interest with which it will be studied. McN ally's Physical iieography, accompanied by Montcith's Lessous inAstronomv, was adopted, to bo UBtd in thoBe departments of the study which are indicted by their titles. Guyot's Common School Geography was adopted as a Physical Gcographv of a "grade different from McNally's. Inasmuch as there seems to bo some misap prehoneion as to the intention and design of thu Hoard in recommending the different text-book" in geography, it seems proper to state that i was their intention to recommend the uso of Mitchell's Geographiewby all classes which have hitherto used, or which would otherwise use Cornell's, and that they did not design that Guyot's Geographies should be used, except by pupils who, having passed through Mitchell's, desiro to advance to the study of physical geo graphy by Guyot's method. The publishers of Mitchell's New Geographies rill solid agents into every town in the State, to supply schools according to tho terms annexed, and it is hoped that superintendents will furnish -vcry facility for tho speedy prosecution of their business.
