MINING JOURNAL. FROSTBUHG, MD., AUGUST 18, 1882 Oder calls the editor of the Ifit “• graduate of the Journal olltce.” Bud joke on the Journal office.— Lonaconing Beviiir. “Bad," eh? Well, we believe Robinson is a graduate of the Moil, nee Valley Times office, in fact a species of grandson of the Journal office. Suppose that's very “bad." In the meeting the other day Mr. Mayer in the outset, while not really flattering the press, did not object to the facts going out through that me dium. When it came to the Goal Trade Journal, however, and the three-quarter column “squib” of 1879, his remarks were not impressively complimentary to the Archimedean implement that moves the world. It is the opinion of many that the time lias come (u unite tor the assertion and protection of the rights <>' the people against the steady and 'harming encroach ments of corporations.—Cumberland In dependent. 0, yes; but aren’t you still groping away back among the mediaeval no tions such as that the men ought to be kicked for not going to work at 50 cents ? Tub Proper Standard.— The colored teachers of Louisville pass the same ex amination as do the white teachers, and do as much work afterward. In considera tion of these facts the school hoard has at last equalized their salaries. This was right. The days of estimating the value of services by any other standard than one of right are about passed.—Wheeling Hey itler. That’s strange. Wo were at the conference the other day expecting the inauguration of the milienium, but the weather was bad for new eras. The “standard" was there, but the companies didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t eee it. Where the Monet ib Coming From. —The Cumberland Times of Thursday says : It was given out yesterday that Clear field operators were sending money into the region, and that secret emissaries were known to have been here from that sec tion. An operator staled last evening, that it was pretty generally believed that inegular supplies ot money, that had been received of late, could he traced to this source. In this connection we understand that Columbia Typographicial Union, No. 101, of Washington, D. C., sent ssl 25 to the miners of Georges Creek this week. We believe brother Tay lor claims membership in this body, “now a fraction of the K. of L.," and as a stockholder in the $51.25, be ought to know the sources of those "irregular supplies." While Mr. Mayer was dispensing the reasons why Georges Crosk coal had been almost run out of market, it would have been so very interes ting had he told also why it became necessary to build a new railroad out let lor the region, and to move heaven and earth to strangle it at Hay street after it was built. Now, Mr. Henry Lovei idge, for instance, has a fine as sortment of vigorous statistics con stantly on hand showing how the new road became a necessity. We recognized in Mr. Mayer’s figures and statements demonstrating how Clearfield had driven our coal out of market several of the Maryland and American complaints against the Cumberland and Pennsylvania rail toad. Certainly these allegations looked like a half dozen pairs of twins, and, although it comes over us like ihe memory of a dream, it seems as i! we had heard, as it were, some body auy tha Clearfield coal region and the Cumberland and Pennsyl vania railroad had been engaged in a com piracy against the superior qual ity and proper market price of Georges Creek coal. MISCELLANEOUS. Hon. L. 0. Smith, of Hagerstown, was elected president of the Chesa peake and Ohio Canal Co. Thursday. Coal Mine Fire— A Serious Sit uation.—Thuisday morning about 7 o’clo’ck fire was discovered issuing from the mouth of aslope near Vale Summit station, superintended in earlier days by Michael Baxter and Thomas Corcoran. This is one ot several slopes driven 1,100 feet on a level with what is known as Pompey slope—a mine of the Consolidation coal company. Near the the village of Pompey Smash the fire has excited some consternation among the people, as the stability of the surface is threatened. The Consolidation au thorities are also exercised concerning the outcome of a most threatening danger to their moat valuable area. The origin of the fire dates back years ago to Spruce Hill, the prog ress of which has been occasionally alluded to iu these columns. It has now reached an alarming stage and its suppression will tax the skill of the company. It has not only de prived the citizens of Pompey of their source of coal supply, but has proba bly destroyed the mine of its opening at this point. The southern slope is said to he loot. Efforts will probably be made to arrest, its course, but they must be prompt and effective. The damages are already assessed al vari ous large figures. Georges Creek Coal— Weekly Statistics of Shipments. —The record of shipments from the mines of the Georges Creek coal region for the week ending Saturday, August 12th, 1882, closed as follows : Total tons for week 18,2:13 “ “ “ year 390,775 Decrease over corresponding pe riod last year (187,321 Total tons to B. & O R. for week 10,080 “ “ “ “ “ year 40t,020 Decrease over corresponding per iod last year 818,080 Total tons to C.& O Canal tor week 2,510 “ “ “ “ “ year. 24,081 Decrease over corresponding per iod last year 248,053 Total tons to Pa. Reports of a break by the miners at Lonaconing ciroulated freely. These were corroborated by the Cumberland dailies, and altogeth er people did not know what to think of affairs. , A representative of tho Journal visited Lonaconing and found some excitement over the arrival of 35 new men for Koontz mins. No dem onstration was made. Nothing was heard there of tho rumored break. Two of the men referred to left at once, not being satisfied with the ap pearance of things. They thought others would follow. Improvements. —Mr. David Knode has recently placed a ttone gutter in front of his pjoperty on Bowoiy street. A handsomely painted sign, the work of Mr. James Hawke, was swung to the breeze Tuesday from a pole in front of H. Seymour & Co’s billiard parlors on Main sheet. Appointment. —Among the ap pointments of Pension Clerks secured by Congressman Urner for Maryland Ransom T. Powell, E.-q., of Eckhart, was favored. Personally and politi cally it was well deserved. A Serenade. —The Arion Band last Saturday evening serenaded Miss Mary MoKelty, of Pittsburg, at the residence of her hostess, Mies Sophia Smeltz. After several choice airs had been performed the members were invited to partake of refresh- I ments, to which they did justice. The fair recipient acknowledged the compliment and afterwards several gentlemen were ushered into the parlor where pleasant converse was had for an hour with the amiable visitor and her agreeable companions. School Affairs. — A meeting of the School Board was held last Satur day. The following business of local interest transpired : The resignation of Mr. J. E. J. Buokey, as principal of Barton public school, was accepted and his election as principal of Froslburg school oon- I firmed. The following nominations of prin cipals by trustees were confirmed : ;T. F. Patterson, Flintatone, No. 2; j J. L. Kelley, Midland; Clement Reid- j ler, Dutch Hollo n. Cochrane this summer that every candidate for a teacher’s certi ficate prepared at the Barton Normal J School passed the examination, not I ono failing. These who succeeded i number eighteen.” This is a testi monial to Mr. Buckey, the principal, of considerable force and value. The following, taken from the re cently published directory of the school board, will bo ol interest: The scholastic year will open September 4, 1882, and will close May 25,1882, giving three terms and s half of tuition. Doremer was elected prinoi- j pal of the Barton school the first of j thia week. He has made a good re- | cord as teacher in Cumberland. The State Teachers’ Association I will meet in Cumberland from the 29th to 31st inst. inclusive. Tho ex ercises promi .e to be of a highly eu- : tertaining and instructive character. Among the speakers to be present j are Hon. J. Randolph Tucker, ol j Virginia, and Prof. H. E. Sheppard, I of Baltimoic. Tho colored school-house has been j recently repaired somewhat with an outlay of S4O. The building is yet too much of a barn for children to I study in during cold weather and its location is far from being a desirable one. The colored “people want a new i school-house and they certainly du- j serve it. Business Locals. (iotlHiiniulloil. —lt is said that 50,000 people Dio annually iu the United States alone from this disease. In some) sections of the country one death in every i three is from Consumption. This can be, and should be avoided; our people are too caioless about an ordinary cough or cold, and other symptoms of threat and lung affections that lead to this disease. You should arrest it while in the genu. Two cr three doses of Dr. Bosauko’s Cough and Lung Syrup will relieve an ordinary cough or cold. It does not dry up a cough like many preparations on tho market and leave the disease behind it, but acts directly ou the throat and bronchial lubes, removing ail the phlegm and morbid matter that ac cumulates in tlie throat and lungs. In Hie fail of 1873, my boys ami myself wore I employed in the New Hope Slope, one of j Ike Consolidation company’s mines, and ! under Hie supervision of Messrs James B. | and B. J. Thomas. A few days ago I I resolved to investigate Hie matter and have I Hie whole transaction made public. 1 re | quested one ot the company’s clerks to I ob.igc me by making an examination of [ Hie company’s time-book of the above date, and the result of that examination shows the company lias paid me iu all for work done by that horse sixty-six ($30.25) dol j lars and twenty-live ecu s exclusive of his keeping. 1 know the gentleman that ! made the examination; ids veracity can not he disputed. I have been in and around lids region since 1851, and I here make Hie assertion and chal lenge contradiction that in dl my career as a miner up to the present tune I never have made to any agent, superintendent, mining boss, or any proprietor of any mining work any overture, direct or indi rect, li.i the purpose ol getting any situa tion, or any other favor to the Injury of my fellow-workmen. Wo have raised eleven of a (amity, I may say, lo men and women, and up to this day I have never taken the benefit or defrauded any of my croditois in any way, and we owe no man anything iu the true sense of the word. 1 will readily admit my disposition has been and is to get all I could lor my labor and to labor for all I cun get. 1 will also ad mit that 1 have on scy-.-vl occasions held different opinions from uniuyofuiy fellow workmen on alleged grievances, and we have divided at inside meetings to test the strength of either side and have been left I in a very small minority ; but when culled in the presence of an agent to state any giievanccs, I always tried to have the man liness to make a statement of our com plaints, instead of allying from and afraid to speak to him. 1 Have also at limes dif fered with my bosses and on the impulses of the moment have given them very un becoming language. Now it being guilty of all thesecharges constitutes a blackleg, then I am gnitlv of Hie charge. I will state in conclusion that every tact herein named enn be verified and proven by oral and written testimony. What, then, can bo said of would-be respectable persons circulating rumors which are untrue, un just and damaging lo the character and business of private individuals without ever investigating to ascertain whether they are true or false. It is dishonorable, to say the least of it, and particularly so when done by persons who are themselves exceedingly exacting and sensitive about their own affairs and interests. In truth, they deserve harsher terms applied lo them, for they are giving indirect assistance and encouragement to that large number among us who ate so dishonest and lost to every principle of true manhood nslo feel no shame in not paying their honest debts, and generally it is tins latter class who de light to defame the good name or staudi ng of another.
