Such practical remembrances of our pres ence here always forces the conclu sion that Frostbuig is a right pleasant vale of tears to live in. Work at the new Ocean slope pro gresses favorably. Shortly after New Year it will hi ready for shipping coal. The wet weather of the summer and fall has retarded the work, the presence of water in considerable quantities giving a large and constant amount of trouble. A colored public school has been started in Weaternport, with Mary Brown, (colored,) as teacher, Virginia L, Wright was transferred from Jackson school and mad ) assis tant at the Weaternport white school. John S. Miller was appointed a trustee of the Weaternport school to succeed bis brother, Maurice A. Miller, deceased. From Mr. J. E. J. Buckey we learn the following facts with regard to Public School, No. 1, and the Bowery school, Loth of which are uuder his charge: Number of pupills enrolled at No. 1 during fall term 505; aver age attendance 2GB. This low aver age was due to the presence of diph theria in the town. At Bowery the enrolment was 173; the average at tendance 123. Annual Meeting of the Dual Grand Lodge, I. 0. G. T.—The mo notony of Frostburg affairs was broken this week by the Annual Session of the Dual Grand Lodge. Independent Cider of Good Templars, of M .ryland, held in Shaffer's Hall ou the 291 h and 30th nit. Three sessions were held each day, G. W. C. T. Cecil J. Kars oer in the chair. Vaiiotis matters pertaining to the interests of the Or der and the cause of Temperance in general were debated, and while the discussion of some of the questions were earnest and displayed different opinions as to means for at taining cer tain ends, everything was harmonious and all united in uu unabated deter mination to work shoulder to shoulder for the overthrow oi King A'cohol. Thursday morning tl.e Grand Lodge elected its officers for the ensuing year. Tne road is thus directly aco aside to the people ot the latter via the new Washington Bottom bridge. Cumberland papers, it is noticed, rarely allude to any fair suff'-rer in that city as having “one foot in the ■ grave." In this way much unseemly conjecture as to the dispos.ticm of the balance of the deceased is allayed and people are led to believe that Cum berland graves are of the usual size. Among other things overlooked last week was mention of schedule changes on the Geirgts Creek and Cumberland railroad. The Sunday tia.es have teen discontinued. Thanksgiving day was generally observed in and around Froatburg by a partial suspension of business and mining operations. Fraternal Visit. —ln response to an informal invitation a number of Frostburg and Lonaconing Masons visited the Mt. Savage Lodge Mon day evening. Result—a pleasant lime. New Parer.— The Queen City Courier, a new Cumberland weekly paper, ccmes to i:s well-shapen, well printed and well-edited. It is pub lished by N. .1. P. Soheerraessor & Co., who, we are glad to note, will take the .side of the people on all public questions. This-December is likely to be sotne’- what remarkable, and perhaps ex ceptional. Colonel Walter Hawkes, tho em inent meteorologist, predicts an in tensely cold winter. Ho prophesies several weeks’ continuous sleighing in this latitude, and says that the Poto mac River will he frozen as solid as the Kenebeo.
