At the temperance convention held last week in. 8^ Paul, a State temper ance party waa ibraied, and a tiekot of temperance men was nominated for the State of&ces, as follow*: For Governor—Rev. D. Cobb, of Olmatead County. L\cnt. Governor—Col. Stevens, of Mfaaeapolia. Xot Secretary of State—T. J. Thomp son of Houston Co. For Attorney General—Col. J. Ham Davidaon. For State Auditor—Cs C. Blanchard, Anoka L. A. Abbott, Olmsted' Mr. Cobb, in his speech of accept ance, was well received. Iffie conven tion was composed of earnest men, who evidently mean business, and are pledg ed to entire prohibition. Having con eluded, (whether hastily or not, is a question,) that they can expect nothing trom existing parties, in the way of prohibition, they have launched out into the formation of a new party, with a determination to-check the evils of intemperance. Every good man in, the State must sympathize with this new party in its de»!re to check intemperance, although there will be considerable djlffiireiNe of opinion as to the propriety of the course adopted to accomplish it. Division meana: weakness. I were better ttot all good men should unite their forces in the party which has already done so much ftp the country, and thus help it complete its mission. If it is not pure, itbieq, purify it. It is certainly more capable of curing the evils of intern per ance than the old democratic- party, as it bag far less internal opposition to encounter) and its chances are super ior to those of the now party, because of the prestige of its past deeds, |pd of its present strength and committal to .the principWof. progress. The- best thing lor the cause- of liberty, equality, temperance tind economy,,would be for all good men to keep together within the pa]* of the party. It is elastic 'enough to include every reform which the progress of the age demands, has a platform capable of enlargement, ant as it completes the work it has on han some of its plttpks ean'be tpmovedf ant, otheis substituted vhfeh shall commit jtbp .tyarty, if uot at once to direct pro hibition!.-at least to such a policy will greatly cripple the liquor traffic, and pav.e t&p. na^fpr itaJnal extinction. But tbcrie are the names of a. few copperheads on this tempera nee-ticket which wiil serve to place earnest Re publicans, who may be temperance men, upon their guard. Messrs. Graut, Hoag, Hamlin, and Stevens are democrat#, the two former are even worse than that, and whoever affiliates with thtse men in their efforts to found anew party, even 011 suoh a noblo ba sis as tciii per a ace, vcxjl, subject himself to the imputation of political npos^j or defective judgment-. 1:SH ^rginia from «0 to 40 iu Maine oriuont, Maryland, North Carolina. The wheat crop as a whole is large. The only States which show a decrease are Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and Cali fornia. Some of it is of inferior quali ty, and a small portion has boeo it\}i\r ed by rains after harvest but a con siderable portion of tho Western wheat is of good quality, and that of the South is decidedly superior. There is a reduction both in number and conditon of stock hogs. Minneso ta, Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri, rapidly growing States, have made an increase in numbers, as have some of the Southern States. There is appar ently a decrease, as compared with last year, of 5 to 10 per cent. The probabilities were in favor of a yield of 3,730,000 bales of cotton. Franklin Pierce died at Concord, New Hampshtay on Friday last, the 8t!i inst. Mr. Pierce was born at Hillsborough, N. H., Nov. 23d, 1804, and graduated at Bowdoin College,, Maine, in 1824. He studied law in the office of Levi Woodbury, at Ports mouth, N. H., was admitted to the Mr in 1827, and commenced the prac tice of his profession at Hillsborough. Tor some time his success at the bar appeared somewhat doubtful, but be never lost courage, or ceased to believe that he would ultimately arrive at distinction. Mr. Pierce was a firm supporter of Genu Jackson be served four yeais in the State Legislature in 1833 he was elected to Congress, and held a seat in tho house until 1837, wben he was elected to the United States: Senate. He resigned his seat in 1842, and resumed the practice of law, this time at Concoed. Mr. Pierce was elected President iU 1852, over Gen. Scott. At the expiration of his term of office, ho travelled in Europe until 1860, when he retired to Concord where he has since lived in comparative privacy. 3»r. Llvlngatene Heard From. A London dispatch says a missionary irom Zanzibar, on the east coast of Africa, has arrived, bringing the wel come intelligence that a letter has been received from Dr. livings tone, dated February, 1869. The Dr. was then at ,Lakfr Tanquaquika, about 200 miles south-west of Lake Ylctoria Nyanza, in good health, -but short of provisions. This will be joyful news to thousands who have followed with the deepest in terest this bold and persevering explor er in the wilds of Africa, but who have feared that he had fallen a victim to his adventurous spirit. 6e Abroad lor News. Ta» Faribault Republican has heard complaints from farmers living near Cannon City that their wheat upon threshing turns out considerably short of, tbeir anticipations. The blight was more dtstrnctive than had been sup posed THE Hastings Union says that Mr. Hugh Derham, of Rosemont, Dakoto county, Jutd six stocks $f wheat destroy ed by fire, a few days ago, canscd by the burning of a straw stack, which had been set on fire the day before.— The hard wind started up the fire again which run on the stable to the stacks. The loss was between 500 to 600 bush els of wheat. The value of the hay lost by the high water in the Minnesota Valley, between Shakopee and St. Paul, a dis tance, of thirty miles, is estimated at $4,200. From Shakopee to Mankato the estimate of loss i* about $8,0§|0, or a total of 2,500 tons, at $5 a ton. It is thought, however, that there will be no scarcity in that region, as the amount o? hay cut this year was much larger than usiia). THE Winona Republican says that the Manlove. who was recently execu ted-in Paraguay, as stated a few days since, was not the geutlcman of that name who was Mr. Dill's partner in the lumber trade in that city some years ago, but a brother who also resided there at the same time. Mr. Dill's former part ner, John P. Manlove. is now in Dela ware, where lie occupies at responsible position as business man It is prop er to state, also, that he was a Union man during the war. TUB Winona Republican of the 7th says the Rochester accommodation train uuder the direction of Conductor War ren, this morning, brought in forty eight loaded cars—two of which were loaded with flour, oue with barley, and the rest with wheat. THE Waseca County JSkw* says, ac cording to the assessor's returns, Wase ca county raised last year 300,882 bushels of wheat, which, at an .average of 80 cents a bushel, makes the sum of $24.0,705 60. The Indianapolis Journal briefly but graphically describes the scene of the explosion at the Indiana State Fair on the lstinsb: To attempt a pen picture of the scene were folly. Imagine fifteen thousand people, palid with fear, rushing and crushing to and fro, impelled by a nameless ^something toward an indefina ble object men bearing dead and wounded into the various halls, wo men shrieking and crying, for fear their husbands, sons or brothers might be ain^ng the killed strong men con vulscd and in tears because temporarily separated from wives and children, and in .suspense as to their safety here stumbling across the mutilated form of •A man there appalled with the horrid spectacle of a skull absolutely stripped i,fits flesh here an arm, there a pair of legs here aside of flesh cooked until it looked like tripe there a pool of clot ted blood here a horse struck dead in its harness, with the- occupants of the carriage dumb and palsied with terror. All this and, more, infinitely, must be imagined, to fill in the details of a pic ture of whieh it were next to impossi ble to give but the faintest outlines. Several yards-from, the disaster was found a pair of laga. held together by the merest shred of flesh. At one place was the headless truriU, o£ a man at another was tho leg of a woman, with her boot and stocking and apart of her drawers still upon it the arm of a man was found driven i'lto a poplar board, while not far from power hall was seen the body of a man so horribly mutila ted that his heart, stomach, liver and lungs could readily be scon. When first discovered'his heart was still pal pitating, and tho motion of the organ was plainly observed. A man, walking in front of the ex ecutive headquarters, was startled at seeing the skull of a man drop in front of biin, the flesh actually scalded off the bones, but the eyes and teeth still re maining in the sockets and jaws. It-is reported, apparently upon good authority, that a woman was delivered of a child on the ground, the fright bringiug on a miscarriage, wlv.c)i may cause her death. VOL 2.
