CMCAOO, DeC. 13'18dl:—Tbe year in draw ing to a close, an1 bustuees 'men are bcRin* ning to estimate its profits and losses.. There has been a larger amount of -business Hone during the past year, than in any preceding vear, lut it has been done at less profit, and in tbe caise of Wholesale dealers, whose goods are largely sold on trust, the balance sheet cannot be strnck till the collections are made, which, in tho present scarcity of money in the country, is a slow and difficult work. Money is close at the banks, and none bnt the best customers are accommodated with all the loans they require. LOWER PRICES obtain for'almost all fancy goods, with a pros pect of their going still lower, and our retail merchants are selling off their stocks as fast, as they can, at a great reduction o~n the prices of the early fall a proof of tbe want or mon wto meet maturing dttneations. ahd'tif the downward tendency ot prices. Every one know* that there mnst be a great shrinkage in nominal value before we can reach a spe cio basis. The general reduction in prices, $nd the decline of gold—or rather the appreciation of greenbacks—shows, that we are approxima ting the specie standard. A few weeks will reveal tho disposition Congress will mako of the tariff, taxes and finance. If these ques tions are settled satisfactorily, business men and capitalists will have a new p«int of de parture,'and- feel that they have a stable oasis for the establishment of new enterpris es, and greater activity in old oqes. In the meantime, the leading business men are pre paring for increased activity another year THE WHEAT MARKET is inactive, receipts are light, shipments by water liavo ceased, and prices continue low. Tho dull season is fairly upon us, as far as trade is concerned. There is nothing new here in the line of litt-rature. The Agitator has bidden us Care well and begins anew life in Boston with the. opening vear. There is talk of anew woman's »r here of a broader characterHhan the tator, but nothiig is yet matured. THE SECULAR AND RELIOIOU8 PRESS flourish here in tho greatest perfection, and are typps of western nrogress and enter prise. The changed relations which busi ness, toUtiQs and religion have been made to sustain to eich other, within a single ge ora tion, is marvelous. In the early kistory of secular journalism in this country, religious topics wote regarded as foreign to the secu lar press, ana tho proceedings of religious bodies, and the progress of religious reviv als seouied bnt a meagra notice, as matter of news—often accompanied by an apology, as if the press were treading on unusual, if not forbidden ground. Gradually, however, the secular journals attained to greater freedom, and hroader views of their dnties, till now nothing of human interest escapes their no tice. Tho change in religious journals has been quite as marked. From being devoted, solely to religious topics, and thus giving a quasi sanction to the practical heresay that relig ion was rightfully divorced from business and politics, these papers, beside giving re ligious news, discussing religious questions, and enforcing religions truth, nbw publish a eummary of tho cur-, rent news, chronicle all im portant events, give foil commercial reports, and discuss, adtn marked ability, financial and political questions. Taking a lively in terest in all that concerna human well-being, they seek to mould the government and bus iness of tbe conntnr, in its national aspects as well as in the detaila of private life, into harmony with the laws of God. Tne leading religions presses of the country not only command a large circulation and influence, but are sought for by business men and poli ticians, as indices of the future and guides of a healthy public sentiment, in relation to trade and politics. The infusion of a healtby moral sentiment into channels of business and politics is a public benefaction. In this connection I cannot forbear noticing a re cent flagiant breach of good manners—not to say good morals—in a widely circulated religions Journal, with which have been familiar from its oiigin—tbe New York Inde pendent. For the last four years it has watered its coluiqna largely with commercial advertising and wholesale puffing of. railroad bonds and mortgages, banks, insurance com panieB.&c.,and prospered pecuniarily so do ug.Independent of all rebgious organizations id representing only its editor and publish .j, it had aright to use its columns ae it chose, subjeot only to the laws of morality, and to the courtesies and amenities which are observed by alt the decent portion of the secular press. But in its issue of December 2d, it has two cuts occupying half of the first and last pages oi a triple sheet, representing —•the first—the principles of the Independ- ent, and what it claims to have accomplished, and—the last—the Birthday Banqnet oi' the Independent on attaining ita majority of twenty-one years. In this last cut are repre sented the publisher, editor and contributors of the Independent, at a feast, while in one corner the waiter is driving out a lean, hungry dog, on whose collar is printed, in capitals, the name of its Chicago cotempo rary, the "Advance." Its self-glorification is a matter of .aste, bnt ita pictorial vilifica tion of ita neighbor is unworthy of Chris tian newspaper. What is the character of the cotemporarv whioh the Independent caricatures and contemns THE ADVANCE is a religions family journal, published by the Advanbe Co., in Chicago, at |2.g0 a year. It has a very able editorial corps, and along array of contribntorsrembracing the best re ligious and literary talent in the country, ltev. Dr. Patton, its editor-in-chief, is the peer in ability, character, qualifications, and in all the attributes of a Christian gentleman, of any editor in the land. The Advance has all the excellencies without the egotism of tho Independent, never sells its opinions to cor porations or individuals, discusses public questions ably and fearlessly, is free from' bigotry and sectarian controversy, actively promotes the cause of Snnday schools, tem perance and every good work, and circulates widely among tbe members of all religious denominations. The progressive Henry Ward Beecher says, "I regard it as standing fairly on the highest ground yet reached by religions journals in America," and the con servative l)r. Bnsbnell declares, "the Ad vance is the ablest, beBt and most out-spoken re.igions journal published." I am glad to learn that, since tho publication of the Inde pendent's indecent cartoon, the mails from all parts of the country have brought hosts of subscribers who have quit the Independ ent in disgnst to take the Advance, its able political, financial and commercial articles commend it to businesss men and statesmen, and its Agrlenltural, Scien tific and Literary departments, its fnll market reports ana its admirable synopsis of enrrent news, give it the breodth and scope of a first-class .secular paper: Whoever wishes senting the Great ADVANCE. To keep pace with the growing interest in practical Horticulture, and to comply with frequent sppea a from all puts of the country for information of a practical character on the subject, we have engaged the services of a person who is experienced In rural affairs to write in a lucid style a series of articlcs on the Management of Small Farms, Fruit and Vegetable Culture, and haw to make them pay^giviug general spcciiic directions iVoiu planting to the ultimate disposal of the crop Of late years there has been.,a lucrative business carried on by unprincipled men", in soiling worthless and old plants under new names to the inexperienced. THE TRI BUNE will be always ready to guard .the far-' mer against any such imposition, that comes within our knowledge. VETERINARY DEPARTMENT. To make THE TRIBUNE still more valua ble to ita agricultural readers, have en gaged Prof. JAMES LAW, Veterinary Surgeon in Cornell University,to answer questions con cerning diseases of Cattle, Horses, Sheep, and other domestic animals, and to prescribe remtdiee. Answers and prescriptions will be given only through tbe columns or THE TRIBUNE. We aro euro that this new fea ture in THE TRIBUNE Will add largely to its readers, as all owners of animals are liable to ne«d the information proffered. Inquiries should be made as brief as possible, that the questions, answers, and prescriptions may be published together. In sihort, we intend that THE TRIBUNE shall keep in the advance in all tbat concerns iheAgricnltnral,Manufactur ing, Mining, and other interests of the conn try, and that ior variety and completeness, it shall remain altogether the most valu&ble, in teresting, and instructive NEWSPAPER pub lished in the world. It haa been well observed that a careful reading and study of the Farmers' Club Be ports in THE TRIBUNE alone will nave a farmer hundreds of dollars in his crop. In addition to. these reports, we ahall continue to print the bebt things written on the eub ject of agriculture by American and foreign writers, and shall increase these features from year to year. As it is, prudent farmer can do without it. As a lesson to his workmen alone, evety farmer shouid place THE WEEKLY TRIBUNE upon his table every Saturday evening. THE TRIBUNE -it the b^st and cheapestpa per in the country. This is not said in a a.irit of boaatfulness. It haa fallen to New York to create tin greatest newspapers of tbo country. Here 'concentrate the com' meroe, tho manufactures, tho mineral resources, the agricultural wealth of the Republic. Hero all the news gathers, and the patronage is so large that journalists can afford to print it. Thia is the strength of THE TRIBUNE, We print the cheapest, and best edited wi-ekly newspaper in the country. We have ali the advantages around us. Wo have great Daily and Semi-Weekly edit ons. All the elaborate and intricate machinery of our establishment—perhaps the most complete in America—i* derjfed to the, purpose of »nying THE WEEKLY TRI BUNE the beot and cheapest newspaper in the world. The result is that we havo so aystematized and expanded our resources that every copy of THE WEEKLY TRIBUNE contains as much, matter as a duodecimo volume. Think of it I For two dollars, the subscriber to THB TRIBUNE for one year buys as much reading matter as though he fitted a duty of. his library reith fifty volumes, containing the greatest works in tne language. The force of cheapness can no further go. THE WEEKLY TRIBUNE is the paper of the people. Here the eager student may learn the last lessons of science. Here the scholar may read reviews of the best books. Here may be found correspondence from all parts of th* world, the observations of sin con and gifted men, who servo THE TRI BUNE in almost every country.. THE TRIBUNE is strong by reason of Us enormous circulation and great cheapness It has lonir been conceded that T&E WEEKLY TRIBUNE has the largest circulation of any newspaper in the oonntry. For years we have printed twioe as many papers, perhaps, as all of tho other weekly editions of the city dai lies combined. This is why we are enabled to do our work so thoroughly and eheaply. The larger our circulation, the better, paper we can ake. What are the practical suggestions' Many. Let every subscriber renew his subscription, and urge hie neighbors to do the same. If a man cannot afford to pay two dollars, let him raise a club, by inducing hisneighnore to anbseribe, and wa shall send him a oopy gratis for his trouble^ No newspaper so large and eomnlete as THE WEEKLY XRIB UNE was ever bofore offered at so Iowa price. Even when our currency was at par with gold, no such papetybut THE TRIBUTE was offered at that nrice and THE TRIBUNE then ooat us far lere than it now doee..
