The speculation may not prove a very profitable one. To OUR friend S. C. Hopkins, of Boston, we are under obligations for a late Boston Ueraht. From this paper we learn that the late Isaac Rich be queathed $1,600 to the Hutchinson* in aid of their Minnesota Church. The property of deceased was sworn at SI. 700.000. We think this a generous donation, and the Methodists will re ceive it thankfully. MR. O. B. DEARBORN, residing near the State line, made ns an agreable visit Saturday last. From him we learn that the Desciples of Otranto, Iowa, have been holding a series of pro tracted meetings for a couple of weeks past, and were not very succcssful in obtaining converts. The meetings are to continue during the present week, when it is hopeful several additions will de made to the church. THE young ladies of our city have just commenced acting in good faith in relation to improving the golden op portunity offered them. Saturday last about nine sleighs, filled with the beau monde of our city, could be seen prom enading our streets, and as suddenly disappearing. We learn that Browns dale was the place visited, and ail in dulged in a happy time, the ladies per fuming their part charmingly. WE acknowledge a pleasant call from Mr. D. O. Pratt, of this township. From him we learn that considerable sickness is prevailing in his locality, chiefly among the minor community. He also informs us that the school in district number twenty-nine, under the supervision of Mr. Gettys, of Browns dale, is prospering finely. Jolly times are had at spelling and singing schools by the youths. They appear to enjoy life in that locality. JOHN CURTAIN, of Ramsey, died at his house Sunday night last. Some years since he received a rupture from which he never recovered, and last Fri day, while doing some heavy lifting broke the rupture, and from which ac cident is uttributed his death. A wife and three small children arc left to uiourn the loss of a kind husband and a loving father. He was buried in the Catholic Cemetery on Turtle crcok, Tuesday. Is there an ordinance prohibiting cattle from roaming on the streets and preying on the contents of the farmer's sleigh box If there is such an ordi nance why is it not etiforcod and if there is none, why does the city council delay in ridding the streets of the hun gry bovincs'( It is not very pleasant for a farmer to have the hay and oats lie placed in the sleigh for the susten ance of his horses devoured by strange cattle. We hope our city fathers will attend to the matter. THOSE mares are bent on notori ety, aud desire to keep their names before the public. In front of the Davidson House the front bob" struck a stump, which freed the mares, and their gnit increased. CHICAGO IMPROVEMENTS.—The well known music house of Julius Bauer & Co., now on 270 614 Michigan ave nue, are about to make a very valuable and important change from their pres ent locations. No wonder that Democratic sheet is gaining in popularity. The people admire such slang, in. a horn, and will soon find that the Register is not a friend to them. See how it abuses our Legislators, abuses Grant, abuses every thing and everybody, without discrim ination. By these means it hopes to secure economical officers, and exe cute the printing in an economical" manner. The past tells what kind of economy" the Register longs and prays for. But keep on with your abuse and you will be rewarded. MR. P. M. RODNEY, of Adams, was on the 3d inst., committed to jail on default of bail. A writ of haitr.au cor pus was granted by Court Commissioner French on the 5th inst., made returna ble on the 7th at 10 o'clock A. M. On motion of the County Attorney an adjournment was granted until next Saturday P. 2 o'clock. The cause of complaint was that Mr. P. M. Rooney refused or neglected to post notices call ing a special meeting of which the said Rooney was chairman, whereupon P. F, Rooney caused his arrest, and for want of bail, was lodged in the county jail. The trial next Saturday will determine whether a man can be imprisoucd for such an offence. Cedar City Items. NINE weeks of the four months school term have passed. In a recent spelling contest the boys were sorely defeated by the girls, and make a dis tinction between defeat and conquest. They propose trying it on a 'ain. Correspondence. GRAND MEADOW, Feb. 2,1872. Editor Mower County Trauwript. SIR:—I have once more witnessed one of the many revolting aud disgrace ful outrages against law and humanity so frequent of late in our otherwise quiet little village. A Norwegian, with his wife, came into town and, af ter partaking of as much liquor as he could stand under was thrust out of doors by the licensed saloon-keeper who followed him half-way across the street, and from sime casual remark from the drunken inan, the saloon keeper took offence and, without further provocation, he, with all the science of pugilist and the fierceness ol a bull dog, struck the drunken man in the face, which felled him to the earth. He fell upon the hard and frozen ground, cutting his head badly and sprinkling the street with blood. I know not ho*v seriously the man was hurt, and, as he was made drunk legally and according to law, I suppose the saloon-keeper will go free. One year ago this town voted in fa vor of granting licenses to liquor sellers but now three-fourths of the people are opposed to licensing any more sa loon-keepers. Yours trulv. Oua friend, M. C. Potter, Esq., of Minncrcka Stock Farm" fame, called on us last Thursday. From hiut wc learned that 3Ir. John Greg aud son, of Nevada, in this county, recently purchased his favorite young short horn bull, Hiawatha." This fi.ie bovine is second son of Mr. Potter's premium English bull, Duke of Wellington." The Duke being imported from the Roytil Dominion by Hon. A. G. Earl, of Picrrcpont Manor, New York. His dam is a daughter of the Duke of Jef ferson," who was imported by T. V. Mason, Esq., of Jefferson county, N. Y. Ilis grand dam is a grand daughter of the world-renowned bull, St. Nicho las," who drew the first prize for year lings in London, England, where he was purchased by James Brodie, for Gen. G. D. Hungerford, of Adams, N. Y. Since then lie lias drawn sev eral first premiums, and at the United States Fair, held at Chicago, his owner refused an offer of 85,000 for him. This is the fifth young bull Mr. Pot ter has sold from atock raised in Min nesota—three thorough-breds and two grades. The grades were purchased by Hon. 11. H. Everett, of Le Sueur, of this State, and »J. S. Shearman, of ltockford, Illinois. Mr. Potter does uot advise any one to purchase grades, as the b^st are always the cheapest in the end. Mr. Gregg sees the point in purchus a thorough-bred instead ofa grade ani- 'aW' nial, and we prophecy he owns a fine herd of cattle five year* From Itaeiue. Jan. 20th, 1872. An error occurred in the last commu nication from this place in reference to the teacher at the Center School House. Itthould have been Mr. Glover instead of Glenn. Mr. Mason is teaching in the Knox School District. He is giving good satisfaction as well as the others. I understand that Mr. Knox is teaching school in in the village of Frankford. The Masons gave a select party on the 24th ult., at High Forest. A num ber of our prominent citizens attended. A good time was enjoyed by those who were present. The party was held at the 'fatten-all House. Tbe Rochester band furnished the music which was of the very best quality. I understand that the people of High Forest arc contemplating having a Writing School in that village this win ter. Mr. Pnttcn, of Rock Dell, will probably be the tcacher, as his qualifi cations arc goud, atid wc may expect a profitable school. The Grange at High Forest is pros pering. We expect to see the tiuic come when this Society will be of great advantage to the farming community. J. S. Pearson is Master, and J. L. Rockwell, Secretary. We should like to see a law made that would give the same redemption on school land certificates (where thry are assigned for security) as allowed on mortgages. This would be of great benefit to settlers on these lands. I see that Representative •Villiams, of this county, has introduced a bill granting a dictionary to each School District in the State. This is as it it should be. MARRIED. TAYLOK—KELLOOG— By Rev. A. B. Bish op, Jan. 4ih, at Austin, MR.
