The time f'qp nominating a candidate for President is rapidly approaching.— But little hu thus far been said in this State upon the subject, but it seems to be very evident that General Grant is tho choice of the people. He has faith fully redeemed all the pledges which lie made upon taking the presidential •offire. The government has grown pure and strong under his administra tion. The work of reconstruction has progressed rapidly and peacefully.— Hut little friction has been generated by too oloae contact of the civil and the military powers. Tho application of each has been adjusted to the necessity which required it, with great wisdom. Localities are as free from atrocities of any kiud as they were before the rebel lion, and thftj are at tho same time learning, nnder a bencfieant adminis tration, to conduct their business and maintain the institutions of society without the existence of human slavery. This is true of al! portions'of the terri tory lately in arms against the Govern ment, At the North greater prosperity has never been known nor have the burdens ever been more equally dis tributed among all classes. Labor and vapital are more nearly harmonious at this time than they have been during the last twenty years. The finances oi the country are in a satisfactory condi tion favoring all classcs, and, at the same time affording the amplest secur ity to all. The legislation of the country, for which the Executive is largely respon sible, hiiii been judicious and humane. The udjustuieiit oi our difficulties with foreign powers by diplomacy rather than by war is an achievement more brilliant than any ever won by military power. General Grant is emphatically a citi zen. liis sympathies are with the peo ple. Ilis efforts are always put forth in their interest. He champions no prin ciple that docs not reach down to the bottom timbers of the government— He is neither factious nor speculative nor corrupt he is no admirer of men he believes in sublime effort. Politicians are organising an opposi tion to him, but who aro they Sum ner, although a great man, is a disap pointed man, and he is goaded on by the spurs of disappointed ambition! There is loo much of self in his hostil ity. Trumbull wants the Presiden cy Greeley is fearful lest his taking off" may not be deferred long enough to give him a chance in 1876 Schurz is revolutionary in every fiber of his brain. These men oppose Grant. Shall their counsel weigh against the sound judgment of the people and turn the scale Not in Minnesota. She will send ten delegates for General Grant. C«Hl7 Pristine. The Register had another spasm last week. It is troubled with attacks of economy. It is subject to them—in deed, the difficulty has become chronic, and whether the cuse is hopeless or not can't be determined until after the next general election. It wants to print the tax sale for three cents per description,—" has offered to do it and furnish good security." Now, tax payers, et us read the law. Section 67 of chapter 30, of the general laws of 1868, reads as follows, viz There shail be allowed to the pub lishers of newspapers for advertising the delinquent and forfeited tax lists «il' the several counties, the sunt of fifteen (15) cents for each description." Don't )hat settle the price for doing the work described We think we all agree that it duos. Very well. Sec tion 119, pa^re 143, general laws of 1867, reads a* follows, viz The County Auditors phall cause the list of delinquent lands in their re spective counties to be published at ]«ast three wt-cke, between the third Monday of March and the third Mon day of May. in each year, in some newspar printed :nd published in •heir re ectiv^ COUNT IF P." This law ..ilia it the duty of the County Auditor cane tbe list to be ihli h«*d, e., he is tc select the per son to do the work. The State has fix**) ftio price. Now suppose lbs Reg istn- agrees to prink &'c. at three cunts per description?- ttio Slate liai not 51 von the Au4il)f nor any other pcrxnn its utitknrity to uiakc snch agreement, ticnce anj* contract uiade by liiin regarding the price would be void. What would the Register do iu that Ciise Jt would recover by a hw-suit ten delegate* »»e full suui fixed by law. 1 One.) more. That paper talks about retrenching." What is the significa tion of this word It is the curtail ment of all expenses which are either superfluous or excessive. Procuring labor at half its value or material at one third of its co.st is not retrench ment! l'hat is extortion. "The la borer is worthy of his hire," and this question of printing has been settled u^on its merits at a medium point. Ten cents was oucc the price. That was not enough. It was doubled That was too much. The Legislature vacillated between the two extremes and fiually settled midway between them. The hegistvr knows that the pay is not excessive, that it is ouly just. Stale lT(literally. MEETING OF T1IE BOARD OF REGENTS. The Board of Regents of the Uni versity met at the building at 10 A. M. on Tuesday, tbe 26th inst., and were in session the remainder of the day. There were present tbe full Board as follows: J. S. Pillsbary, President. A. A. Harwood, Secretary. John Nicols, Treasurer. Horace Austin, II. B. Wilson, EjC'uffnio. W. W. -Volwell, II. H. Sibley, Paris Gibson, G. S. Bryant, O. Dalryinple. Reports from the several standiug cooiinittccs were received and actcd upon. President Folwell gave a detailed and interesting account of his rccei.t trip to Washington, to attend the National Convention of Agriculturists. Several applications for professorships were received and filed. Action was taken in reference to the employment of a Professor of Military Science, and a resolution was adopted requesting the Secretary of War to de tail a military officer to fill the position. Dr. Samuel D. Flugg, President, and Dr. Alexander Stone, Secretary of the St. Paul Preparatory School for Medi cal Instruction, appeared before tbe Board and submitted a proposition for establishing a Medical College at St. Paul, which shall be the medic»l de partment of the University of Minne sota, and be under the supervision and control of the Board of Regents the management of the Preparatory School to sustain said branch department until the University is able to care for it.— The proposition was referred to the executive committee. The President was authorized to pro cure the printing of the catalogue of the University, to be ready at the close of the college year. The executive committee were au thorized to employ skilled and compe tent landscape gardeners, and cause the University grounds to be tastefully laid out and ornamented. The following resolution was adopt ed Rrmlred, That tbe duties of the Profeagor of Chemistry, including a course of lectures on Agricultural Chemistry be devolved upon the chair of Agriculture, after tha expiration of tbe present college year. Finding it impossible to complete the business iu one day the Board adjourn ed to meet at the Executive Room in the Capitol at 10 o'clock A. M. on Wednesday. 9500 was appropriated out of the current fund to be expended annually for the purchase of additions to the li brary. $50 was voted to defray the expense of publishing the University Almanac. The question of the geological survey of the State authorized by the Legisla ture, and committed to the Regents, was refered to the executive committee. Proposed modifications of the courses of study were discussed, and referred to the Committee on Faculty aud Univer sity Courses The propriety of discontinuing the preparatory school was considered, and the matter finally committed to the Faculty and the State Superintendent. Arrangements were made whereby additional Labratory Room, aud appara tus will be provided at the beginning of the next collegiate year. A great amount of general business relating to tbe interior working of the University was transacted. Tbe pre sent college year will close on the 27th of June next. State News. A fire broke out about 11:30 on Wednesday night, in Wolf's brewery, in Stillwater, entirely consuming the building and contents. Several other buildings in the vicinity were destroy ed. Two men named John Grupp and Bernard Poison were burned to death in the brewery. There was but a slight insurance on the property de stroyed. It is rumored that the general man agement of the Milwaukee St. Paul ltailroad Company has devolved upon John C. Gault. A young man by the name of Lcroy Fenlason, suicided at Minneapolis, late ly, by shooting himself through the brain. No reason is assigned for the rash act. He was universally respected and leaves a young rvile to whom he was devotedly attached. Rows are frequent in the Saintly City, houses beinp broken open and the inmates frightened and driven away. Mrs. Brisbin, of St. Paul, took lau danum immediately upon hearing the result of her auit against Madam I Robinson." The character ot Mrs B. was so completely established that she was anxious to "depart, in peace." The poison was removed through the $55 shingles, $3 »g«ncy of a stomap»r«*». liiM'mMw GENERAL CURBIN, United States District Attorney for South Carolina, mcde an address at Manchester, New Hcmp.«hire, a fuw weeks ago, in which he said that "many negroes had been murdered, and that 600 colored people of York county alone had been brutal ly whipped for affiliating with the Re publicans." It was ahso the opinion of General Corbift that the special power given to the President of suspending the writ of hutets corpus had tended to diminish the Ku Klux outrages. IT is reported that Queen Victoria has evinced unsoundness of mind, from the fact that she has pardoned the Rev erend Watson, who, under circum st uiccd thiit for cool brutality and fiend ishness almost lacks a parallel, murder ed his wife, and the commutation of the death sentence of Christina Ed munds the poisoner. After forty years service in the Established Church, this Watson boldly avowed his utter unbe lief in the dogmas of the church, or in God or a future state of existence. In the pardon of this beastly wretch the public is justly indignant. Correspondence. ADAMS. Minn., March 16. Editor Hotter County Traaieript. SIR :—Tho school in District No. 72, in the town of Adams, closed on Fri day, March 15th. Whole number of pupils in attendance during the term was 30 average attendance, 16. The prizes were awarded to the Misses Kate and Nellie Madden for punctual atten dance, they having been neither tardy uor absent. Miss Nellie Madden re ceived the prize for good deportment. The progress made by the pupils in the spelling classes is worthy of mention considering there was no prize offered. A. II. LE ROY, Minn March 23,1872. Editor Motcer County ftaiucript: SIR:—Prof. M. II. Morgan, of Chi cago, has been conducting a musical convention in pur village for the past ten days, giving instruction in vocal music to a large class of the singers of Le Roy and the surrounding towns.— Those persons who caine from a dis tance were entertained by the hospita ble citizens free of charge. All seemed well pleased with the progress made in so short a time. His manner of in struction is excellent just such as is needed by our singers. The first concert was given on Fri day evening of last week, which met with marked success. The An vil Chorus," the closing piece, was ren dered with admirable effect. The sing concert came off last Wednes day eve. It consisted of solos, ducts, trios and quartetts also choruses by the whole class. Yours, A SUBSCRIBER. Austin, by a Milwaukee Man. The following description of Austin, written by Russ," a travelling corres pondent of the Milwaukee Sentinel, is worthy the perusal of all who wish to learn whether it has made any progress within the last four or five years: AUSTIN, Minn., March 15. Spread out a map before you, and see the admirable advantages for com munication with all points of the com pass which Austin possesses, and you will be surprised, as am, to find that the agricultural and commercial advan tages of this region have heretofore been so poorly understood and appre ciated. Here is a rich fertile county in the soutl ern tier of Minnesota, no acre of which is more than ten utiles distant from a railroad station, every acre capable of a high state of cultiva tion and an unlimited production of all the staple growths of the fruitful Northwest here is a direct outlet to the south, southeast and south west, by means of the Milwaukee & St. Paul, the Illinois Central, the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Minnes ta, and the Central Rail road of lowr, to the east and west by means of the Southcru Minnesota, and to the nort by the Milwaukee & St. Paul and here is a citizenship, tried in the grind and grit of earlier and harder times, with large industry, per severing energy, taste and intelligence, so that the emigrant, while enjoying the advantage of new lands for pur chase and cultivation, can also settle down at once among the growers and lovers of a refined society—convenien ces which happily are growing in esti mated value among our people. The climate of this region needs no eulogy fiom me. It is a pro*.erb that Minne sota air is a tonic and ihvigorator of Nature's own making, more magical than enchantment, more deligntful and cheap than the nostrums of the shops. The effect of it is seen in the firm, elastic step of the people, and heard in the quick, prompt tone of voice which bespeaks decision of char acter and warrauts execution of pur pose. Austin, the county scat of Mower county, has about 2,800 inhabitants, and is built in a substantial uiannor.— Thrift and taste arc shown upon its dwellings and business houses, and what is particularly favorable to pur chasers, the trade is largely confincd to exclusive stocks. The town has seven religious organ izations with good plac of worship the Congregationalists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Norwegian Lutherans and Roman Cath olics, while the Univcrsalists have an organization without a house. It has not fallen in my way to see so fine a school building as (hat of Austiu for many months—a beautiful brick struc ture, three stories high, with six apart ments and seven teachers It is light ed, heated and ventilated on the most approved method, and has a complete ••rade with a high school course. The secret societies of the place are the Masons, the Odd Fellows and Grand Army of the Republic. I cannot better give an idea of what it will cost to make a home in Austin than as follows: Business lots are quoted at $500 to $1,000 residence lots at $100 to $300. The best of hard wood for tuel sells at from $4 to $5 per cord, and coal from $6 to $7.50 per ton, according to quality. Good water is reached at 14 feet to 25 feet below the surface clay.makinga hard, red brick, is found just in the edge of town, and good building stone is deliv ered on the ground at not more than $8 at cord. Common lumber may be quoted at $21 fencing, $22 flooring, $35 siding, $30 finishing. $30 to to $5.50 and lath $3 tn $4. The trade of Austin reaches out to 1 broad region, there being no competing tows of large size nc irer than porhaps 35 (o 40 miles. A fair estimate upou the annual business done would be about as follows Hardware, $100,000 dry goods, 6150 000 drugs. !tc., $40, 000 clothing, $100,000 agricultural implements at retail, 875,000. at whole sale, $110,000 groceries $150,000 lumber, $45,000 harness and saddlery, $17,000 grain purchases, all kinds, 350,000 bushels and cattle shipments net, perhaps, to exceed 1.000 head. Manufacturing is small as yet, but the excellent convenience? for distribu ting the products ot any and all indus tries will soon build up that branch.— Messrs. Engle & Co. have a flouring mill on the Cedar, capable of producing nearly 200 barrels of flour daily, with a good power yet unemployed. A short distaucc down the same stream there are two more mills, and a new one is fast approaching completion three miles above. There is also a foundry, yet quite young in business, to which I may add the building of fanuing-mills, by Mr. Young, upon a new and valuable patent by himself, together with all the general workers in all the various necessities of such places, and the story is nearly told. Austiu has two prosperous new pi pers the Register.published by Messrs. Craig, Davidson & Basford and tli Transcript, by A. A. Ilarwood* The two banking institutions of the town are the First National Bank and thn Mower County Bank. They handle a large amount of capital for moving the products of a wide region of couu tj.y# AN accident occurred last week at Randall, on the St. Paul & Pacific rail road, by which three men lost their lives and several more were severely injured. VALUE OF FARMERS' CLUBS.—The Maine Farmer relates the following incident which occured at the agricul tural convention held at Paris A gentleman gave his experience with great minuteness in regard to feeding his farm stock the present winter. He was a mechanic by trade, but through the influence of a town farmers' club, had during the last three years had his interests and attcution largely directed to agriculture and practical farming upon a somewhat limited scalc. These experiences and the results were of so valuable and practical a nature that one of the distinguished speakers present said he considered t'»e facts stated by the gentleman a sufficient couipen satiou for his journey of four hun dred and fifty miles to attend the con vention.
