Entered as second-class matter at the post offl&fat Austin, Minnesota. C.H. DAVIDSON,Editor gff$ Proprietor AUSTIN, MINNESOTA: WEDNESDAY MORNING, APRIL 26,1882. FARGO attributes the late Aurora Borealis to their electric lights. THE average American is like the coun try he belongs to—without a past, but with a boundless future. A LITTLE Oswego girl went to heaven a few days ago, by way of the jumping rope. She only had to jump 200 times. THE Minnesota State Fair will be held in the city of Rochester next fall, com mencing the last of August and hold nine days. THE Congressional Committee on Edu cation last Friday reported a bill recom mending an appropriation of $95,000,000 for the education of all the children in the United States. WE would ask the Albert Lea Standard when it learned that the Caledonia Argus and the Austin Register were Republican papers? "We supposed they were Demo cratic, or at least Independent. THE bible used in the U. S. Senate for swearing in Senators, has been stolen. It has been in use for fifty-three years, and every senator admitted during that period has been sworn in upon that bible, and kissed it. ANOTHER terrible tornado visited Mis souri last week Tuesday. At Montrose eighteen dwellings and four churches were destroyed. At Brownsville fifty houses were thrown down, six persons killed and thirty injured. Other places were visited, but the damage was not so severe. MODERN ideas and modern improve ments, who can keep pace with them? Think of a ride in a Pullman car through the streets of Jerusalem the golden, and the Garden of Eden. It seems like sacri lege to think of it, and yet it is said in creased travel will justify the laying of steel rails in Judea. THE great dry goods house of A. T. Stewart & Co. is soon to close business. Since the death of the merchant prince, Judge Henry Hilton and Wm. Libbv have conducted the business in the old name. Mr. Stewart left no children, no sons in or out of the firm, to perpetuate his name or his great business interests. A MOST dastardly attempt was made last Wednesday morning to blow up Carleton College. A machine was de posited in one of the windows in the second story loaded with fire-crackers and other explosives. Slight injuries to the building in the way of broken windows and falling plaster was the amount of damage. THE latest news from the comet is that the earth will only receive a slight brush from its caudle appendage. If we could know the positive locality that would re ceive a whisk of its fiery tale we would be glad to give the information. We have heard that Albert Lea was supposed to be the point—and all on account of Standard. CHARLES DARWIN, the scientist, is dead. Darwin's life cannot be accounted a fail ure, though his theories remain unproven. He has introduced new ideas, which can not fail of giving fresh impulses to scien tific study and research. He was the honored member of many learned socie ties, was eminent in geology, zoology and botany. A "WHISKY-SOAKER by the name of Toohey, shot his wife dead in Minneapo lis. A jury of twelve intelligent Minne apolitans last Friday brought in a verdict of manslaughter in the second degree, the extreme penalty for which is seven years in state's prison. Bill Erwin, the noted criminal lawyer, was attorney for the prisoner, and made the jury believe the wife-killer was insane with delirium tremens at the time he committed the act. ONE of the most disastrous fires that ever visited the State, swept over Lake City last Saturday morning. Lake City was a prosperous business town of about 8,500 inhabitants. Full three-fourths of the business part now lies in ashes. The fire was discovered about 2 A. m., in an unoccupied building, and is supposed to be the work of an incendiary. The flames leaped from building to building, across streets, and over vacant lots, and raged for five hours. The loss is estima ted at $350,000, and the insurance at $100,000. The fire department worked nobly, but so furious were the flames that they baffled all efforts, and the fire burned until it burned itself out. HON. MILO WHITE of Olmsted county, is in the field as a candidate for Congress. We are informed that Mr. White is a most excellent man, and would make a good and wise Congressman. Because the TRANSCRIPT supports Mr. Dunnell is no reason why it should not treat opposing candidates with the utmost courtesy— and especially a gentleman like Mr. White. We believe Mr. Dunnell to be the ablest, most influential, and best man for the district,—and because we believe so, shall favor his re-nomination and election. However, we propose to .stand by the choice of the Republican conven tion, and whether it be Mr. Dunnell, Mr. White, or any other good man, he can depend upon our hearty support. THIS is about the way the Republican newspapers of the First District stand on the Congressional question: FOR MB. BUNNELL. Albert Lea Enterprise. AUSTIN TRANSCRIPT. Spring Valley Vidette. DOCTOR KOCH, of London, has been nuting experiments with tubercular dis eases, and lias discovered that the matter expectorated by consumptives is full of parasites, which are capable of commpni-. eating the disease. He hopes to discover a harmless form of the parasite which may be used for inocculatfon against the disease the same as in the case of small pox,—Et. THE useful boys and girls should be gcouraged. vtEvery parent is more or resMnsiblja fofithe 4egre£ of useful ness of rjSis cliJldrenjs if properly trailed/' they aip geno&lly 'useful rfow impor tant that the rising generation'Of' boys should not grow up a generation of loaf ers. The Philadelphia Times has this to say, which we commend to the perusal of boys generally: "The useful girls will some day undertake the task of looking up boys who know how to do something besides pl&y pool, smoke Cigarettes and swing little canes along the street. They will want to find young men who are able to support wives, and in all probability they will have a great deal more difficulty in the search than the young men have to find girls who know how to broil a steak. The useless boys are quite as common as the useless girls, and they are ever so much more helpless. A useless girl may be made ornamental a useless boy can't be made anything." DULUTH Tribune: "The St. Paul Globe suggests the name of Mark H. Dunnell for President upon the basis of a reorgan ization of parties, with the tariff as an issue. Dunnell's recent speech has set the country moving, and whatever its effects, it will raise him into national prominence. It was not merely what he said, but the fact of his saying it that has given his speech so much importance. It was a strong presentation of the vexed question from the low tariff point of view, and the personal independence of the speaker in breaking away from the opin ions held by a majority of his own party will strengthen him in the estimation of the people. A man with strong and clear views, with the courage to express them, is always respected, and when he is in the right, he becomes a power. Dunnell is such a man. He is wont to think for himself, and what he says is always lis tened to with the attention that a man of forcible character is sure to command. He has been one of the best workers that Minnesota has sent to Congress, and the prominence he has attained is not due to any adventitious circumstances, but to his own powers of mind and will. He has made himselt felt, and though he has not had the lucky combination of circum stances which helped Windom to high places, he has a force of character which impresses his colleagues and the country at large, which Windom has not. The difference between the two men may be seen in the popular feeling regarding them. Whether or no the feeling has any foundation matters not at present. It exists and we are not at liberty to close our eyes to it. This feeling regards Win dom's success as due more to his luck than to any innate ability of his own, while Dunnell's slow and gradual rise into na tional prominence is regarded as the work of the man's own efforts in the develop ment of his powers. It may be looking a little too high to see Dunnell the standard bearer of the low-tariff men, but his ene mies in this State cannot afford to sneeze at him. He is altogether too big a man." Immigrant Anti-Immigratlonists. There is a great deal of inconsistency in the Anti-Chinese agitation by the United States. This country, which of all countries in this wide world, boasts of its open doors to people of all colors from all nations, of its freedom from all forms of caste and oppression, how strange that it should legislate against the iminigra tion of Chinese any mere than those of any other nationality. The following fictitious petitions from the N. Y. 'tribune of Feb. 25, 1879, are worthy of being quoted on each recurrence of this agita tion: To the Honorable Jlouse of Representatives: The undersigned, legal voters and citi zens of the United States, respectfully ask that y)u prevent the immigration of any more Germans to this country, be cause they will' drink lager, go on Sunday excursions, save their money, and are buying up all the land in the country. ROBERT MAOGREGOR, HUGH MACDOUGAL, SANDY MACPHERSON, and 1 000 others. To Ter Honers the Mimbers of Congress: We, the undersigned citizens of the United States of Amerikie, respectfully petition you to tack into the "Haythen Chinee" bill the white nagers or Ratalians that are coming over here in dhroves and working ten or twilve hours a day for nothin' at all at all, and boarding thim selves at that. Now what can an honest man do to aim a dacent livin' if you don't put a stop to it. PATRICK O'REILLY, MICHAEL MCDERMOTT, WM. JAMES O'SULLIVAN, and 1,000 others. Congrishman: Vot for you no schtop dem Irishman shust de same mit Schine man? He drinks up all de viskey like notings, votes every time all day lonj*, and makes drubles mit us. And it is shust so easy mit de needle in de camel's eye ash to have de behind vordtmitde Irishman. JACOB ROERHAKSEN, HANS BUMGABTEN, PETER VON STEINBURGER, and many others.
