W LLIA COLV! U^nCTTnrmii 1AN -. MRRITT, LUirOKS. UK!) WING, M. f., JAN. 16, 1858. O I E A lUPJEit E I OPPICE OPI-OMIT. THE POST OFRIOK, There are members' in both houses from tho North, that, politically, have nothing to lose—that have I st the confidence of their constituents and expect nothing more from them- who may le base enough to favor this measure. Such may be careless of the plac•• they will occupy in the public opinion. But they will be marked) during the b.ief space of time that thay remain unforgolten, as base traitors and hirelings. This to lie sure would IKS small satisfac-victim tion to Minne-o a Nothing indeed could hush the general indignation which would be the consequent of the success of this movement nothing could or should satisfy her short of an entire and abso'ut? discon nection of her name and interests from the wnole transac.i«n. We would rather our Senators and lleprcscn'atives would re. sirn their sea's, and the Legislature and pco pie hereafter refuse to fill then positions— to sever all connexion with the general gov ernment, and go on our own hook—than that Minnesota should, even against her will, lie a party to such an iniquity. The wlnle thing seems to ns incredible it can not bo persisted in, or if it is, we arc confi nt that sufficient numbers Ironi the north rannot lie found to carry it thiough the Low er House wo hope so, at any rate. s:, OK TIIK COUNTY* The Pino Mand plan for a division is to tike ci„iit iowns fr.m (ioodhue- -being two t?CJ sol* townships from the south part of the county. Three townships comprisin? tho iDithern t'er of townships in Olmst'.d Co., and the two westerly townships in Wuba shaw. The Zumbrotli plan includes the whole of the above an I half of south town ship 111 in additjo'n. Tho residents of these townships are said to 'o unanimous in favor of tho division. Thoy claim that tho ifls tanea from that part of the county to lied Wing is so -.Trent as to render it vory troub limine and inconvenient to transact busi ness. That Goodhue is large enough with out them. Tint the territory embraced in tha limits of the proposed county is suffi ciently large, that its trade concentrates at one point within it, nnd naturally should be embraced in tho unc county. They urge that (ltd Wing should favor the vision on account, that, without it there is ri.-.k of the County Seat being removed or of the Lake City plain for a division being eventually carried, which would he still worse for lied county have great are nine to*. rvniTOKS v\ v\ Wl W\i\\] ieutiiifl.d nn assessed all in "heap," so that we would defy even the astu'c Councilor him self, to distinguish the amount due from each. We know and can point to over one hundred different lots of those advertised, that arc thus situated, some of which are owned by as many as three different indi viduals and in distinct pascels. Now, sir, pray tel! us who is to adjudge the amount ol taxes due from each. It is much feared that she will not be admitted tbis session. The Southern members of Congros&enler tain tho design of coupling us with Kanzis witfi the LccdthptOn Con.-titution. and make rs admission the price o' ours. Much as we wish Minnesota to be' admitted—to see her Senators and itbpreseritatives in the halls of Congress—to have their influence in the legislation of ilie country—in short, to set' Minnesota occupy the important position she well dosoi ve-i-we do not wish it at thai price, and we .ire sure that our Senators and Representatives will not iuk it. It is claim ed that this scheme will lie accomplished, Hint the Administration has strength (is it an administration measure?) to force it through. That the South is unanimous— and that a Miflicicnt number of members f,om the Nnth wil vote with the "tuth'o accomplish it. Ti assess ment roll was open for inspection during the time, and at the place, required by law and ample notice given of it. Tax payers instead of always finding fault, when the collector comes around, should !ook out—each one for himself a' all events— and have errors and mistakes corrected in season. Our city Council have the credit of be ing a very efficient and business-like body, and no one of that body stands higher than Mr. Ashton, who seems tc be the particular of the wrath of Right." E KOO! TE.11PI.AttS. In the month of May, 1856, at Winona M. T. was established the grand lodge of the I. O. of Good Templars, There was then five subordinate lodges in tho Terri tory, wth a membership in all of ono hun dred an seventy-five. At the present time there are over thirty lodges, and over four thousand Good Tem plars in Minnesota, showing a six fold in crease in the lodges in less than twenty months, and in the membership over twen ty fold. And while the order has thus ad vanced in ours, it has made equal progress in the other States. The Washingtonians, the Bachabites, th" Sons of Temperance, each more successful than the other, have arisen and passed away in succession, and the Tem plars, profiting by the experience of the past have perfected an organization that has made more rapid progress, obtained more of the public esteem and confidence, and further advanced the great nnd good cause of tem perance, than all the others combined. Un doubtedly the most interested, tho ivost zealous and successful workers in this cause, are the ladies, and to their admission as members of the order the-great success of the Good Templars may be ascribed. On tho 19th day of October, 1857, a lodge of the order was established in this city, and was opened with twenty-nine members. At the present writing, within three months time from its organization, it numbers over eighty members—ladies and gentlemen— with continual accessions, and all composed of those who will stick close to their prin ciples and continue the fight until the victo ry is won. No member has yet been ex pelled, nor even complained of for any cause whatever, and the most friendly and harmo nious sentiments exist among them, al being united heart and band for the success of their glorious principles, and the down fall of intemperance and vice.
