RED WING, JULY 80 ,1859. TO TH» BV3INKS8 MEN S«ro»-«B Tms COUNTY a oar List of The County Hotel Is now in running order, and ready for the reception of guests. Sheriff Chsndler has established himself in this beautiful public residence, and has already one sub'"Dodworth's ject partially "under conviction." We wish friend Chandler no ill will and would like to see all the hotels well patronised but we hope, for the credit of the county that he will have a poor run" of custom so long as he acts in the capacity of mine host" of the County Hotel. A Decided Nui«nnee. We have before alluded to the wreck of the steamer Galena, which lays at the Low er Levee, and again take occasion to remark that it ought to be removed. It is a dis grace to the Packet Company so long as it remains in its present position, and we hope they will soon have it hauled out. If they slight with impunity the wishes of the citi zens of Red Wing, and take no action in the mater, it would not be a bad plan to test ihe authority of the United States Marshal in the premises. The M. E. Church." By reference to our Church Directory, in another column, it will be seen tint ser vic are about to be resumed in the Metho dist Church in Red Wing. Great credit is due to the persons who have had charge of the re-construction of this edifice, for theboring prompt and efficient manner in which they have performed their duties. It was re-who built under the immediate supervision of Robert Todd, Esq. Services will lie held to-morrow morning and evening at the usual hours. Narrow Escape from Uenth. We are indebted to F. F. Phillco, Esq., for the following particulars of an occur rence which took place last Saturday, at his residence in the upper part of this city. It appears that he had in his employ a girl named Antonett Gallup, who, being subject to occasional spells of severe toothache, was in the habit of taking laudanum as a cure. Last Saturday afternoon one of these spells came on, when resort waa had to the usualsition) remedy, and with seeming relief, as sheclimate—having made no more complaint, and continued about her household duties till night, when she retired at the usuul hour, as did thecold, rest of the family—except Mr. Philen, who was down town. He returned about ten o'clock, and was preparing to go to bed, would when his attention was arrested by a noise in Antonelt's room, as if some one was moving about uneasily in the bed. Know ing of the girl's illness in the afternoon, he supposed she might still be suffering, and suggested to his wile that she had bettor go and see about it. She immediately arose and went to the bed room, where she found the girl sitting upright in the bed. She asked her what ailed her the girl replied nothing, and immediately fell back on the bed, to all appearance lifeless. All was now consternation the family were called up, the neighbors aroused, the doctor sent for, and every exertion wed to restore her to animation. Her body became cold, her pulse and heart apparently ceased their motion, her eyes became fixed and her jaws firmly set, presenting the appearance of a dead person. After some delay Dr. Hawley arrived, and immediately proceeded to apply such restoratives as hed*llar», deemed proper—for a time without any per ceptible effect but after about three hoars of unremitting labor, evidences of restored animation became apparent, and soon the girl was able to sit up and communicate the following. The pain in her tooth, which had modi fied after taking the landannm in the after noon, had broken out afresh upon going to bed, when she arose—in the dark—went to the cupboard, took down the laudanum bot tle, and proceeded to take a large swallow of the unadulterated liquid. She immedi ately startedforher room, which she was fortunate enough to reach, when she pitched headlong upon the bed. The operation of the powerful narcotic caused her to go into spasms, which occasioned the noise calling Mr. Philleo's attention to her. His oppor tune arrival undoubtedly was the means of saying her life, forhadshe remained without discovery fifteen minutes longer, she would certainly have been past restoration. A Delegation Of gentlemen called at the store of J. H.seen Mues, last Monday, and informed the per son in attendance that if he (J. H. The Quadruple Constellation, Is the title of the largest paper ever print ed. We have reeeived a copy of this mam moth sheet, and consider it a typographical achievement of which its proprietors may well be proud. It is an eight page paper, beautifully illustrated, containing thirteen columns of printed matter to the page, (of 104 columns in all) each column four feet long. Its reading matter is equal to that of six Harpeis Magazines, or fifteen New York Ledger*. It is published and edited by Geo. Roberts, New York City. Price 50 cents. Struck ky Lightening. During the thunder storm which raged with such violence early this morning, the barn of Mr. Wm. B. Bevans, situated on La Grange street, was struck by lightning, and a valuable cow lying in the yard instant ly killed. The electric fluid passed down the south-east corner of the building, shat tering the timbers, and throwing splinters in every direction and to a considerable dis tance—some pieces being hurled some six or rods. The report was very loud, and prolonged, like that of a piece ot heavy ord since. Excursion—Sons of Malt(a.) The excursion of this body of pleasure seekers to Minne-ha-ha, was not as numer ously attended as anticipated, though quite a large number participated in it. The boats which conveyed the main body of ex cursionists were the Itaska and Milwaukee. The levee and the banks were crowded with fair ladies and brave men, all anxious to hear the playing cf the world-renowned Band," which it was under stood was to accompany the excursion.— It is unnecessary to say that Ihe Band did not appear, and the only music our citizens heard was the tune that Napoleon has been playing to the Austrians in Italy. Lucky it did not come off on the first of April. Running Away from Gold. Our readers no doubt remember the ship wreck of the ill-fated steamship Central America, and recollect reading of the pas sengers who had an abundance of filthy lu' re," offering it all to save their lives.— A similar case transpired in Red Wing one day during the past week, in which a cer tain person not named Artemiu Ward," played a conspicuous part. The individual in question, it appears held the note of a certain gentleman or gen tlemen, for quite a large sum and at thethem time referred, a party of three gentlemen, wishing to tender the said holder of the note a quantity of gold, sought himforthat purpose, and were lucky enough to see him, but not quick enough to catch him, for noJohn sooner did he become aware aware of their intention than he made tracks for a neigh swamp, which he was so fortunate as to reach just in time to elude his pursuers, thought the game too small to venture into the wet bushes after, and contented themselves with merely standing off and seeking to dislodge the enemy by the most weighty arguments within their reach, viz solt stones. But, like King Philip at Mt.such Hope, the victim had chosen a secure place —which was rendered almost impregnable by the mud, water and hazel bushes—and his pursuers showing no inclination to leave, he quietly lay down—in the mud—and could not be induced to come forth." He remained in this position for a considerable length of time, when his pursuers left, and he crawled out on all fours, (his natural po and struck a bee-line for a warmer been exposed to the mercy of a cold, sleety rain, a little les than six hours, and having incurred, besides a severe the expense of washing and ironing a suit of clothes. He doubtless solaced him self with the fact that by his stratagem he gain another day's interest—quite an item to him, and probably his only motive. P. S.—Since the above was in type, we learn that the said person not named Ar temus Ward," acting upon the principle that "it takes money to buy whisky," con cluded not to patronise a wash-woman, and has worn the suit of clothes above referred to ever since.
