Per contra to this, we were shown, the other day, hicourt the garden of Mrs. Wm. B. All that was found neresssry to raise this tree, was the taking of proper precautions to' shield' it in the winter. The news that Douglas had received the nomination, came on Sunday. Everybody regarded this as peculiarly unfortunate, for all were full of enthusiasm, and longing for an opportunity to display it. It wsufi? not do to wait till Monday evening. The boys watched the long hours of Sunday evening roll slowly along, and when the clock struck twelve, a crowd1 who- were collected and waiting for that even', heralded the incoming of the new day with three rousing cheers forSTEFHES A. DOUGLAS. This was- theSay signal for a demonstration as spontaneous as it was enthusiastic. A military band" —the spirit-stirring fife and drum—struck up Yankee Doodle." A huge bonfire was immediately set to blazing, making the streets as light as day, and the anvils brought out to awaken with their thunder the mid night echoes of the dark old bluffs. Then might have been see:) the love of the De mocracy for DOUGLAS, when men left their comfortable beds to come out and turn the silence and gloom of the night into light and rejoicing for his nomination. In a few minutes a large crowd was on the ground and Mr. ColviU was called uponfora speech. He mounted a dry goods box, and in the light of the biasing fire, delivered a stirring adddress, amid continued cheering. The crowd then formed a procession, with the music at their head, and marched thro* a portion of the town, waking up the Demo crats, and being continually reinforced by new accessions, back again to the bon-fire. And now it began to rain but no onepercede thought of retiring. Water couldn't damp en such enthusiasm as that. They collect ed under the awnings on the walky and speeches were made, and songs sung, and sentiments exchanged, and the band played, and cheers were given fer neasly two- hours,.jack-plane,) and still the rain fell, and the thunder soiled overhead. Not to be held in by the fury of the dements, the crowd now started thro1 mud snd rain, preceded by the music, and dragging the cannon, and cheering as they went along, up to the residence of Judge Wilder, where they fired a salute of throe guns and played several tunes from thence they marched to Jas. Lawther's, where they went through similar performances, and then up to the residence of W. C. WtUmton, who in answer to their call, appeared and made a humorous and telling address, amid enthusiastic cheers and from thence, plsy ing and cheering all round, by Mr. Phelps' ta the fire, which they reached amid a pelt ing shower of rain, just as day was break ing from that till sunrise, the anvils were kept in one continual roar. Wo never before saw so muck genuine enthusiasm manifested. We have never be fore seen men get out of their beds at mid night, to tramp through the mud, regardless of the soaking rain, and forgetful of wet feet and weak constitutions, ta listen to speeches, and cheer in joyful frenzy till their voices foiled, for very joy st the nomi nation of a loved leader. No man bat DOUGLAS, in the United States of America, could, undersuchcircumstances, receive such a tribute of uttdasprised affection and sdm: ration. Half Sheet. In a trial for rape, last week, the prironsY was found guilty, and sentenced by the Judge to serve out a term of twenty days* solita confinement and and eighteen yearn ira' prisonment at hard labor, in the State Prison. After hearing his sentence read, he thanked the Judge snd the jury for their kindness toward him during the trial bat left the room muttering that he hoped'' hff should not live his sentence oat, and that he wbtld kill the woman if he ever got free. While befog- conveyed to jail, he made an ineffectual attempt to escape. The Hamline University'. The examination'and closing-exercises of* the past year of the Hamline University, took place last week. We had no time to attend the examination, but understand that it was very creditable both' to the faculty and the students. The exhibition came off on Wednesday evening, in the M. E. church.
