Some enterprising mechanics arc building
for the city, a fine two story building to be
used as an Engine House, with suitable
rooms for the city Council up stairs. It
will bo a creditable building, and was much
needed. It is greatly to the credit of the
present efficient city Council, that this im
provement is bem built without taxation
upon the city and we may add, that not one
cent of taxation has been levied to carry on
the city government. We regard this
as pretty good for Republicans.

Horses and cattle are dying all along the

limbs and had to seek refuge in the nearest
settlement to save their lives. Ono man
will lose both legs, another both hands.
The Osage Indians had attacked a ptrty

their skins, and killed two, one of whom
they burned and beheaded the other they

northwestern settlements for aid to be sent
them, as they report that their teams are in
such condition that it is impossible for them
to make the trip. A man sent in from
Blue river lost ono of his horses from weak
ness on the road, and the other Was unable
to go. Teams loaded with supplies were

A correspondent of the London T.'m
gives the following account of the feats of a
juggler in the streets of Pekin:
lie first of all spoke for about five minutes
with all the volubility of Charles Mathews,
evidently saying 'something witty, for the
people ronmrtaughod heartily. In the mid
dle of his harangue, however, he was seized
with a fit of choking, and after an effort of
trying to get something out of his throat,
drew forth a little slip of bamboo, like a
Libson toothpick, and another and another,
then he sneezed and out they came from his
nostrils, then from his eyes, until ho com
pleted tho number of thirty seven, by making
one appear half way out at each orifice at
the sanis time, and throw the lot on the
ground for any one to examine. He next
took throe glass balls, about an inch in
diameter, and placed them singly between
his lips, sucked them into hia month and
swallowed first a red one, then a blue, and
last of all a white one hero was a little in

A message from Hunter county, distant
about two hundred miles from here arrived
last night, with heart rending tales of suf
fering for want of food and clothing in the
extreme southwestern part of the State,
lie reports the win'.er as being the most
severe yet experienced in southern Kansus,
snow having fallen to the depth of eighteen
inches on a level. The cold is intense and
stock of all description is dying olf with
fearful rapidity. Most of the inhabitants
are reduced to Buffalo meat alone, and not
a (cam is able to make the journey through
the snow. He walked twenty-six miles be
fore finding a track, after leaving the settle

where he took sta?e and came on. The
mail on the route had not been carried
through for three weeks, owing to the great
depth of the snow and the cold.
