The two had been living together in a shanty and cutting wood in Dunn township. The Otter Tail sheriff wired that Schul had departed. and a general information telegram was sent out from Fergus Falls. 1 Schul was arrested at Osakis on 1 Tuesday afternoon last and was taken to Otter Tail county at once, where he has since been held to answer to the crime of murder to the grand jury of that county, which convenes next month. The crime was so brutal and to all appearances so unprovoked that the entire community is horrified, and while there are no threats of lynching there is a general feeling that the officers have the right man in custodj and that even a confes- Right when women want to impart an air of newness to their wardrobes, we bring out many spring lines and mark them less than intended prices. The two men were working1 to gether in the woods and Schul, it is alleged, shot his companion while he was in bed and held his head over a trap door to allow the blood to flow into an excavation under neath the shanty. The theory is that Schul supposed Wagner was dead and started to drag him down 1 to a swamp, but that Wagner showed signs of life and the mur I derer shot his victim twice in the I neck. I CUNNINQ is SHOWS. He then, it is alleged, buried the body deep in the snow in what is one of the worst swamps in the county a place which cannot be crossed in summer—and but for the timely discovery of the body the crime might never have come to light. Schul, the authorities declare, 1 can scarcely make a successful plea 1 of self-defense, as there are no evi dences of a struggle in the shanty where the murder took place,, and Wagner's body, when found, was i dressed only in night clothing. The stories told by Schul after Wagner's disappearance are in one sense the $1.00 White Taffeta silk, 26 inch, A E S S I N E O O Wi'^F9M!j&w.rrr^r""^ypv^r^g9*% 3?FZ* :«*r*r 69c Zambi silks, 27inch, large dotted effects, green, blues, tans, white, cream, navy, Easter sale, yd. Tr«^£• strongest evidence against him. He informed some of the neighbors that Wagner had robbed him of $30 which his father had sent him and had gone to Canada. The murderer had left a trail of i blood stains in dragging the body to the swamp, and to account for this Schul circulated the story that 1 he had collected all of his wolf traps, fourteen in number, which he had set in various parts of the i swamp, and dragged them up to the shanty. He asserted further that I he had shot a rabbit and tied it to (the i' traps as he was bringing them in, and had never seen a rabbit bleed so much as this one did that i it left blood stains all along the trail. His story would have de ceived the neighbors had it not been, for the fact that some of those who 1 had not heard it happened along and, following the trail into the swamp, found that it came to a sudden end at a mound of snow. Digging into the mound, they were shocked to find Wagner's body. Schul came to this city and bought a ticket for Osakis. He seemed to I feel perfectly safe and spent a few I days visiting friends in that vicinity. They could not learn where he had gone, but. instructed the village marshal and station agent to be on the lookout for him. Schul claims that he committed the murder on March 14th, and that he did it in self-defense. His written statement is as follows: "The trouble was caused because I wanted to give up the job and go home. My father had sent me $30 and I had arranged to return, but Wagner objected. Early last Wednesday morning I dressed, in tending to go anyway, but Wagner stopped me. A quarrel followed and Wagner attacked me with a hammer. We had a tussle and in the excite ment my hand in some way grabbed my gun, and just as Wagner was about to strike me I fired. I aimed for the head and I think the bullet struck there. Where the next bullet struck, I do not know. Wagner fell dead on the bunk, and I then tried to drag the body away to hide it. "The blood was dripping to the Marie Antoinette silks, Waist patterns only a very pretty selection, at 69c 79c 88c Black and white checks and plaids, waist OO patterns only, 3*ard, OOC floor and carried away in an exca vation we had built. I succeeded in getting the body outside, but it was too heavy to drag, so I got a rope and, tying it to his feet, pulled the body to a bog. There I scraped the snow away with my knife and buried the body. "When I fully realized what I had done. I decided to get away. I told the people at Pelican Rapids that Wagner had gone to Canada, and, removing his clothing, I left for Osakis to visit a cousin. I stayed there two days longer than I ex pected, and when I tried to leave the sheriff got me. "I acted in self-defense, but no body would believe me, I felt sure, for nobody saw him attack me. We were always friends, but he inten ded to kill me, I feel sure." Clements property is for sale for the small sum of $1200, lot 3, block 9, size of building, new, 26x50. 31-3t. i W. P. SCHMITT.
