Shakopze, August 28. Mr. Editor. — The weather is cloudy and cool. The Minnesota is falling; the Black Hawk and J. B. Gordon, have both made un successful attempts to get over the rapids. Dr. Jewett from Farribault, was here and lectured to us last week, on the prominent topics of the present political campaign, to wit: slavery ex tension and prohibitory liquor law. He had a numerous and attentive audience, all seemed pleased with his remarks. Service was held for the first time in the new Episcopal Church, on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Wilcoxon preached morning and afternoon. — This is the first service ever held in a church in the village, and the size of the audience showed that the people appreciated the oppor tunity. Hereafter services will be held regu larly morning and evening. There are two other Episcojuil Churches within two miles ol us. St. John's Church in Chanhassan, and St. Allans on Lake Minnetonka. We learn that the Rev. Mr. Chamberlain of St. Anthony, will shortly move into the neighltorhood of these two churches, and supply their pulpits regularly.— We are glad to see a church that is so favora bly known as a muse of religion and education, enterprise and science, so early establishing itself in our own midst. Notices have been posted that an application will be made to the District Court for incorpo ration. The census taken for this purpose by Mr. Adams, showes that within the proposed limits wo have adult males 183; adult females 111; male children, 58; female children. 09; total 121. Yours, For Hi*" Tune*. llOii ES KOn THE HOMELESS, YET l.\ MINNESOTA. Cannon Citv, August 29th, 1855. On account of the most accessable prairie lands, joining timber, being taken, it has become quite a general impression with the inhabitants of this Territory, that all the good claims arc oc cupied. But this is a great mistake, for the writer has just returned from a short exploring expedition, and found, to his satisfaction, a large tract of the best land, there is in the Territory, composed of timbered and opening lands, with plenty of beautiful blue-joint grass meadows. — Staid lands are principally unoccupied, which is on account of there being heretofore no roads through them. That difficulty, however, is now obviated ; as there is a good road just complet ed, commencing at Cannon City, a beautiful and flourishing young town on Cannon River, —the castorn boundary of said county,—and running north-west to a town called Wedgewood, located on the Rig Sioux or Dodd Road, and from thence it is to be extended to ficlle Plane, on the St. Peters, —the western boundary of said county.— This road will soon be one of much importance, as it is to be one of the principal links connecting the St. Tcters and the Cannon Rivers. Those who anticipate ever settling in this country, would do well to como and examine immediately, es pecially if they expect to get thoir choice of claims at government price. Any necessary information or assistance can be had relative to procuring claims, free of charge, by calling at Sears’ Store, in Cannon City. REPUBLIC AA’ MASS MEETIMi. Mr. Abbott Laurence, bequeathed in his will ten thousand dollars to the Boston public libra ries—fifty thousand dollars to the law school in Cambridge. Ilis other bequests are not yet made known to the public. Horrible Affair.— Adultery aiul murder. Mr. Levi Smelser, an old and respected citizen, who kept a tin and copper-ware manufactory in Tcliounicoulas street, opposite St. Mary’s market, died about two months since, and was buried by his friends without any suspicion of his having been murdered. A few days since, his negro woman Kitty, went to a Mr. More house, in the Fourth District, and told him that her master had died of arsenic and chlorolorm, administered through the joint agency of her mistress, Mrs. Smelser, a paramour named Scott, and herself, and that other persons uncon nected with the family, were cognizant of, and had connived at the horrible deed. Scott was a workman, or foreman, in Mr. S.’s establishment, and lioarded in the family; an illicit intercourse sprang up between him and Mrs. Smelser, resulting in a desire to get Mr. S. out ol the way, and a scheme of poisoning, to which the negress was made a party through promises of freedom and plenty of money. Be ing fearful of Kitty, however, they kept her closely confined in the house ; she became con science-stricken, and resolved to make a clean breast of it, which she did by telling Mr. More house these particulars. Kitty said that Mrs. Smelser and Scott pro cured the l>oison ; that Mrs. S. mixed the arse nic in a pitcher of water, that Mr. Scott poured out a glasslul of it, and that she herself took it and gave it to her master, who was lying in bed, unsuspicious of any wrong; afterwards hand kerchiefs saturated in chloroform were laid over his face ; and that the other parties who were present several times raised the handkerchiefs to see if the victim was dead, and replaced them. This story would seem almost too horrible for belief, hut Kitty', who was arrested and is now in prison, tells it with a plausibility and a seem ing remorse that cannot be rejected. She told what druggists furnished the poison, and gave Captain Moynan the residue ol tin* arsenic left from poisoning the pitcher of water. She also named a notary on camp street, before whom her free papers had been drawn up. lhe police have been investigating the case for several days, but have made no further ar rests ns yet; the difiiculty being, we believe, the insufficiency of a slave’s testimony to impli cate a white person. Smelser was a German, 40 or 45 years of age; his widow is an Irish woman considerably younger; Scott is an Irish man.—Aw Orleans. July 16.
