He has his new store about completed and has in one of the best stocks of general merchandise in Southwestern Minnesota. Frank Day, editor of the Fairmont Sentinel, dropped up stairs into the big brick, to see us on Tuesday. It was the tirst shake we had had from him and we are very much prepossessed or possessed in his favor. Mr. Hoyl, a good brother Spiritualist from New York city, made us a pleas ant call on Saturday. He said he had often read articles quoted from the ADVANCE and he desired to see the "power behind tlie pt»n" which could speak out so square from the shoulder. F. Elsewhere appears an announcement from the friends of Attorney Chirk announcing him as a candidate for the ollice of Judge of Probate. We believe Mr. (J. is first in the field for this place. He has the main requisite under tlie statute, viz: that a Judge of Probate must be a man 'iearned in the law." THE FAIR. The Nobles County Fair will open on Tuesday next, the 18th, and all tiie in fli'cations point to a large and success ful exhibition, it' the weather holds good. The officers tell us that every body they have seen has promised to come. There is good stock enough in our county to make a good fair without anything else, but this year we have, a magnificent, overflowing, bursting crop of about everything that grows, aud all that is now needed is for the fanners to put their best samples on exhibition. A good lesson might be learned from the recent Villard reception at St.Paul. That is admitted to have been one of tlie most magnificent and successful civic demonstrations ever seen on the continent. The secret of the success was that everyone threw aside his per sonal, party and other prejudices and worked with one object, viz: the suc cess of the display and the irood of the city. If this spirit could prevail for three days next week in this county. Nobles could hold tlie best county fair ever held in the State. A new and permanent building has been erected on the grounds and ample stable room has been provided tor stock, with plenty of iy on the grounds. The track has bi%n greatly improved, .and there will be some good horses and tine racing and trotting may be seen. Col. McGlinc-v, the well known sec retary of the famous Dairymens' Asso ciation, of Elgin, 111., will deliver the annual address and the farmers will hear something of great practical ben efit. The booming crop this year will put Nobles in the front hereafter. Now. put your shoulders to the wheel and boost the county along by the best fail ever held in Southwest Minnesota. The Burlington train pulled in Tues day night on time with from 40 to 50 excursionists 011 board who were soon quartered at the hotels. The excur sionists are mostly from Iowa, a few beieg from Illinois. Burlington, Da veuport, Columbus Junction, Cedar Rapids, Shellsburg, Vinton, Grundy Centre and Traer, or the vicinity of these towns, are all represented. As many more have arranged to come and have secured excursion rates. They will be here as soon as the Iowa fairs aiul matters of that kind which held them back are over. Four or five of the excursionists have gone to points west of us, the rest go ing no further than Worthington.— Yesterday they put in tln ir time where it would do the most good, looking at our incomparable lands aud booming crops. These excursions, although no one of them seems to be large, are doing much to advertise our country and the effect will soon be felt in a substantial influx of the very best class of settlers. All along the line of the Burlington road and beyond into Illinois, Nobles county has been extensively advertised and great interest has been awakened. Parsons & Anderson alone distributed 40.000 documents and advertised in sixteen newspapers, while other parties liaye also did considerable advertising. Since the above was typed, we learn that quite a number of the excursion ist went West to Rock Rapids and oth er points. A western paper says: Nothing will cure some sick men more quickly, than an office, properly applied.—This 'cure' may be very successful in many cases, but we would say: If a man" suffers from a cough or* cold, give him Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. In a recent issue of the ADVANCE we stated that a tramp named John Burke, who had been at work for Mr. Peabody. had left the country after stealing some money. Some of our leaders have been foolish enough to think this referred to John Burke, of Fulda formerly, now a resident of Worthington. Mr. Burke is still here and bears a good name among all who know him. Frost. The first frost noticed in Ncbles county this year was on the 4th of Sept. It was a mere brat frost and did 110 harm. Last Friday night, the 7ih, however, there was a frost which whitened the sidewalks and killed veg etation to some extent. A majority of the farmers whom we have interviewed think the corn is not hurt to any great extent. Others say that on the low lands it is damaged. Wre rarely have a killing frost earlier than from ~5,lie 13th to the 20th, and sometimes i»ot until Oct. 1. See advertisement of Slate Auditor advertising sale of. EDITOII ADVANCE: In last v/eek's ADVANCE 1 notice a communication from Father Simmons, in which he mentions my mune as a candidate for County Superintendent of schools. I will simply state in explanation thereof, that I have been urged by friends to announce myself as a candidate for .the office, but as that is getting rather mo notonous, I have concluded to await the action of tlie convention. I have always taken a great interest in tlie sub ject of education, having taught a part of the time during the last fifteen years in the schools of Wiuona and Olmstead Counties in this State aud the winter schools in my own district. If I should be elected to the office, 1 will devote my entire time to its duties as I have learned by experiance that a Superintendent cannot attend to other professional duties without neglecting the schools. R. WR. MOBEKIA*. THE THRESHER. C. C. Whitney has threshed his tlax and rye. The llax averaged 17i bush els to the acre. The rye was winter rye •and averaged 57 bushels to the acre. Part of his oats is threshed and yields about 05 bushels to the acre. D. Cramer has been out among the threshers and informs us that Joe Mur phy. with his thresher, panned out 77o bushels of barley in a half day on ths Howard & Kellev place in Leota, the yield being fifty bushels to the acre. Some wheat up hat way is reported as yielding thirty bushels to the acre. REAL JiSTA'lE SALES. O. G. Grundsten has sold his house and lot 011 Sth-st. to Gilbert Aiulerson. The house will be 28x2S, with "L" lSx'ifl, two stories high, steep roof, four gables, and will be either brick veneered or concreted. Cemetery Meeting. The Wort'iing ton Cemetery Association met at Judge Wilson's ollice on Saturday night hist and elected C. P. Hewitt and II. J. Ludlow trustees in place of N. A. Bar low and M. 15. Soule. The old plat, was rescinded and a ne.v one made by Sur veyor Lewis Foote adopted. It was about determined to fence the grounds, and this will be settled at a meeting to be held soon. This is essen tial to keep the cemetery from becom ing a herd yard. At present no one feels like putting up tombstones or adorning graves. ESucklin's Arnica Salve. I have not found any place since I left that I like as well as Worthington, nor any county that I like tlie looks of as well as Nobles county. POLISHING THE "WUONG END. Many men daily polish their boots who never give a thought to the con dition of their hair, except to harrow it casually with brush and comb, or sub mit it to the paralyzing attentions of tlie average barber. What, happens? Why, this: From neglect, mental anx iety, or any of a score of causes, the hair turns prematurely gray and begins to fall out Parker's ITair Balsam will at once stop the latter process and re store the original color. An elegant dressing, free from grease. Count il met Thursday night last and ordered two more street lamps placed on Tenth-st., one at the corner of the park, on 4th-av. and the other at the northeast corner of ith-av. and lOth-st.
