The ADVANCE has been entered A9 •eoond class matter at the post"ffice at Worthing ton, Nobles county, Miun. rh*9ld, B*Ub)l«hed, Official County Paper. ROBERT IWECUNE, Editor and Prom tetor WOKTHIHGTOV. MLMM. AUGUST 25. 1892. HOW WEED-SEEDS MULTIPLY. One who has given considerable time to the subject, by counting and multiplying makes the following fig ures for certain well known weeds. The wild carrot often produces 1,200 seeds to a single plant the dandelion, 1,500 chickweed, 2,000 cockle, 3,200 chess, 3,500 dock, 3,700 ragweed, 4, 872 groundsel, 6,500 ox-eyed daisy, 9,600 mallow, 16,500 molher worth, 18,000 foxtail, 19,500 sow thistle, 19, 000 mustard, 31,000 Canadian thistle, 42,000 red poppy, 50,000 burdock, 400, 928 purslaue, 500,000 lamb's quarter, 825,($0." to flew of this surprising fecundity, the.Farmer'dad vice to kill every weed -~l»-wefl worth -following: "If only a few fcre left to seed, they will stock the place for next year. It is wise plan to go over the fields after corn is 'laid by' with the hoe and cut down all straggling weeds that remaiu. Clean up the fence corners too, while you are •bout it. It will save time and labor next year, and the years that follow." Care should be taken, in clearing away weeds, to do it, if possible, be fore the seeds are ripe, as otherwise the very effort to get rid of them may scatter them more widely. It is a good Idea to burn weeds, and to do it as near to the place where they grow as possible. And whllo disposing of weeds don't neglect the roadside growths—though it is better and tidier to keep the roadsides clear of weeds altogether. THE WITCH PLANT. The witch plant, which is the aston ishment of the native Australians as well as the foreigners, resembles our common plaitaiu in the matter of leaf. Six or eight of these leaves, sometimes an iuch and three-quarters broad and five iDches long, often spring from a single "stool," which sits flat on a bare spot without the least sign of a root. COUNTY NEWS. WO.iTllIN'liTON TOWNSHIP. Last week was harvest week in ear nest. Thousiiids of acres of grain were put in shock and a great raunv stacks put up. Here, during the whole week, we bad cool, dry, harvest weath er. Iu some localities thrtshiug is in progress. Our beautiful prairie is dotted with hay stacks. A gentleman who hits made -a journey through Illinois, Wisconsin, the Ddkotas and Minnesota, says that tlte latter state has the best prospect for a large and profitable hay crop. Much meadow land in other states lias been rendered useless by the destruct ive floods. lie predicts high prices for tiie iy crop of this state. lion. John Wolven and wife, of Pe« catonica, HI., are here visiting rela tives and friends in Worthington aud vicinity. Mr. W. owns some fine farms in this township. He has been making some improvements on them. Miss Bessie Whitney returned last week from her visit to Iowa. Mrs. E. F. Whitney, and her daugh ter Sadie, will visit a week iu the west end of this couuty. Miss Martha Bain enjoyed a very pleasant visit here with friends and then went to the Omaha agency, in Nebraska. Mr. Burnham is expecting a visit from two of his brothers, from Wash burn, Woodford county, 111. They are talking of locating here in the near futnre. Our citizens extend the band of welcome. Mr. John Newton has had a steam press out doing work on the Whitney and Chaney farms. Their hay is a good crop. Messrs. Stout and Hazard are over in Leota township doing au extensive baying business. DEWALD. Since my last items the homes of Willis Howard and Frank Sundberg have been made happy by the arrival of a fine baby boy at each place. The weather lias been quite good for harvesting, and has been so well im proved that most of the grain is in the shock or stack. Some have put up hay but the prairie hay is mostly to be cut. Those who used the state prison twine this year are well pleased with it. Miss Ostrander will close her school in district 42 this week. She is a good teacher. She goes to the Normal at Mankato this fall. The best wishes of our people go with her. Miss Richie Maxwell will teach in dist. 42 this winter, and Miss Ellen Sundberg in 15. They are both expe rienced teachers. Prof. S. A. Maxwell, of Mt. Car roll, IU., visited his father, brother and sister here, and returned home by way of the Twin Cities. Mrs. Beckley, and daughter, Jen nie, visited at J. II. Maxwell's last Saturday and Sunday. The steam threshers have commenced their annual round among the farmers. One on its way west last Saturday stuck near the Boddy school house it was delayed in its journey several hours. If the season continues wet there is likely to be a good deal of that kind of trouble. Mrs. Miller visited last week at J. II. Maxwell. Miss Mattie Hastings, one of our briglitest young ladies has accepted the position of bookkeeper in the office of Azom Forbes, Worthington. The boys commenced their duck hunting last Sunday. Sunday don't seem to be a^ mnch in the way of hunt ing or harvesting In this country, as it ought to be. The Sunday school is 42 in flourish ing finely. John Newton our former superintendent was a welcome visitor last Sunday. SEC.
