So aggressive is the plakat, a little P. fish from Siam, that the entertainment it affords has become a national pas* time, but not a very creditable one, to say the least. Tlie fishes are train ed to go through regular battles and are reared artificially for the purpose, while the license to exhibit them to the general public is farmed oat and brings a large amount of money into the royal coffers. They are kept in aquariums built for the purpose and fed upon the larvae of mosquitoes, and every possi ble care is taken of them. Several years ago a few of them were presented loan Englishman by the king of Siam. When the fish is in a quiet state, with the fins at rest, tbe dull colors are not all remarkable. But if two are brought together or within sight of each other, or even if one sees its own image in a looking-^lass, t'ha litttle creature, says the Pittsburg Dispatch, becomes sud denly excited. The fins are raised and tbe whole body shines with a metallic lustre and colors of dazzling beauty, while the protecting gill membrance, waving like a black frill round the throat, makes grotesque the general apppar ance. In this state of irritation it makes repeated darts at its real or re flected antagonist. If now two are placed together in a tank tbey rush at each other with tbe utmost fury. The battle is kept on until one is killed or put to flight, but not until tbey are entirely separated does the victor shut his gaudy fins, that like flags of war are never lowered until peace has been declared. In South America there is a small fish that not only attacks its fellows Of the sea and river, but is greatly dread ed by tbe natives, who, during cer tain seasons, have to ford the streams in which the carbitos is found. Bathers are often attacked by them, the sharp, chisel-shaped teeth taking a bite from the flesh wherever tbev attack. They are perfect scavengers, eating tbe ani mals tbat float down the river, dead or alive. Women can't read a boy's nature a men can, and they might as well own up. Tbe Fort street mother who yes terday sent ber boy to a drug store with a bottle and a'sealed note imag ined that she was sharper than the serpent's tooth when she wrote to the druggist: "Send me half a pint of ort wine, and write on tbe label P. .—Poison." The druggist followed orders, and when tbe boy got outside he tore off the wrapper and read the label. P. W.—Poison." he mused, as he walked along. "Wonder what that is?. P. W. doesn't stand fof iraar rats, either. P. W. can't be hair-dye, nor scalp-wash, and I'm going to touoh my tongue to it" He touched. It tasted so good that he took a sip, and meeting three or four boys just then, the crowd entered a lumber-yard and P. W.'d tbe con tents of that bottle till only a gill was left. Then one of tbe lads ran home after a dipper of water, filled up the Dottle, and the Fort street boy trotted homewards, whispering: "P. W. means pretty weak, and if she finds it so she mustn't blame nobody but the druggist."—Detroit Free Press. —Ice Cream will be served by the ladies of the Presbyterian church every Saturday. (38tf.)
