This quilt was made by Mis. Eliza Severance and given to the ladies missionary society, to be sold for the Society's benefit. Its sale en riched the treasury to the extent of $10.00 and was highly appreciated by the Pastor and his wife, both for the value of thei quilt and the kind thought of the ladies in remember ing them. The tendency of medical science is toward preventive measures. The best thought of the world is being given to the subject. It. is easier and better to prevent than to cure. It has been fully demonsrtated that pneumonia, one of the most dangerous diseases that medical men have to contend with can be prevent ed by the use of Chanberlain's cough Remedy. Pneumonia always results from a cold or from an attact of iflueza (grip), and it has been ob served that this remedy counteracts any tendency of these diseases to ward pneumonia. This has been fully proven in many thousands of case in which this remedy has been use during the great prevalence of colds and grip in recent years and can be relied upon with implicit confidence. Pneumaonia oftep re sults from a silght cold when no (Linger is apprehended until it is suddenly discovered that there is fever and dificulty in breathing and pains in the chest, then it announc ed that the pationt has pneumonia. Be on the safe side and take Chamb relain's Cough Remedy as soon as tho cold is contracted. It always cures. For sale by all druggists. Senator Nelson of Minnesota is not a Spanish scholar, and when he was discussing the statehood bill he made sad havoc of some of the names he used. Senator Elkins, who speaks and writes Spanish readily, enjoyed the Minnesota man's performance greatly. "Maria Virgin," said Nelson, pronouncing the name according to English rules. "Mahreeah Veehil," whispered Elkins to his next door neighbor. "Jicarillas' was given ordi nary pronounciation by the man from the northwest, and Elkins said "Hica reeahs" so that Nelson heard him. The latter looked at the West Virginian for a moment and then lunged ahead. But the look was enough there was no more audible criticism. Clarence Darrow'a Sarcasm. Clarence S. DarrOw, the Chicago law* yer, addressed a meeting in Philadel phia the other evening on "Tolstoi the Man."- He expounded his views on socialism in epigrammatic style, as may be gathered from these sen tences: "It is vulgar for a rich man to work. If he did worK people would think he wasn't rich. There are very, very few rich men in jail. Having money, there are other places for themi to go. Mo3t prisons have chapels so a convict can be a Christian for an hour once a week. I am reconciled to death, because I am sure the rich will not have their pick of things in the other world." Senatorial Amenities. During the speech of Senator Nelson of Minnesota against the admission of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona as states the senator said that 50 per cent of 'he population of New Me: ico Is Spanish and Mexican. Delegate Rodey of New Mexico, who was list ening to the speech, scribbled a note and sent it to Nelson. It said: "Dear Senator: I receently had occasion to inquire into the matter and mucii to my surprise I find that 57 per cent of the population of Minnesota is Nor wegian. How on earth did that state get in?" Cog-Whecp the Latest Paper Triumph Paper cog-wheels have been satis factorily tested. One would imagine that paper in any form could hardly be strong enough for such a purpose, but it has been found eminentliy suit able even in respect to tenacity the behavior of pinions that have- been working incessantly for two years has sufficed to show that paper pinions are not only strong, but, as might be ex pected, exceedingly durable. Perhaps their most conspicuous merit is their noiselessness in working with ireii or other metallic w'lecls. King's Visits to Irelar.c?, King E.lward VII has iti. ,in ^!1 seven visits to Ireland. Valuable to Gardeners. The "planter" is a devicc for the assistance of the gardener. It looks like a pair of large curling tongs, which when closed form a hollow tube and taper to a point. Tho plant to be inserted into the ground is placed in the tube portion, which is then forced info the earth when the Implement is withdrawn.
