UY CHARLES LAWTON LOVELL. TIio’ she has fallen, Show thou no scorn for her, Speak to her gently— Weep for her—mourn for her ; Weak was humanity— Temptations beset her, Starvation ami want On every hand met her. Cold was the garret She was abiding in— Cold as the grave Our lost ones are lying ill— Cold as the miser’s heart, Calloused and sordid, Caring for naught Hut the gold he has hoarded. Fiercely the wind shrieked In through the broken pane, Through crack and crevice, Wailing a mournful strain ; Dark was the hearth, and cold Showing no sign of lire, Near on a heap of straw. Shivered her aged sire. There, too, her mother, dear, AY anting a crust of bread— De i tii standing at the door, Kager to cut life’s thread. AVork unattainable— Famished the aged pair— Poor child of poverty ! Why should she not despair ? Oh, must she see them starve, Sutler from want and cold? How could she gain them bread— How could she •jain them gold ? Then came a fearful thought— God 1 it was terrible— Here in this Christian land .Beauty was saleable. Wildly she fled the place, Wildly into the street— Out in the storm and rain— Sternly her fate to meet. Fled she forth undeliled Bv sins polluting stain, Artless and undeliled, Ne’er came she hack again. The Musician’s Marriage. After having passed the slimmer in vis iting the principal towns of Germany, the celebrated pianist Liszt arrived at Prague, iu October, 1S4G. The day after ho came, his apartment was entered by a stranger—an old man, whoso appearance indicated misery and suffering. The great musician received him with a cordiality which lie would not, perhaps, have shown to a nobleman. Encouraged by his kindness, his visitor said, “I come to yon, sir,as a brother. Ex cuse me if I take the title, not withstand ing the distance that divides us, but for merly I could boast some skill iu playing on the piano, and by giving instructions I gained comfortable livelihood.—Xow J am old, feebler, burdened with a large family, and destitute, of pupils. I live at Nuremburgjbut I came to Prague to seek to recover the remnant of a sma'l property which belonged to my ancestors. Al though nominally successful, the expense of a long litigation has moro than swall owed up the trilling sum I recovered. To morrow I set out for home—penniless.” “And you have come to mo ? You have done well, and I thank you for this proof of your esteem. To assist a brother professor is to me more than a duty—it is a pleasure. Artists should have their purse in common; and if fortune neglects some in order to treat others better then they derserve,it only makes it more noccs lary to preserve the equilibrium by fra ternals kindness. That is my system; so don’t speak of gratitude, for 1 feel that 1 only discharge a debt.” As he uttered theso generous words, Liszt opened a drawer in his writing case, end started when he saw that his usual depository for his money contained but three ducats. He summoned his servant. “Where is the money '!" he asked. “There, sir,” replied the man pointing to the open drawer. “There 1 AYliv, there is scarcely any thing 1” “i know it, sir. If you please to re menber I told you yesterday that the cash was nearly exhausted ” “You see, my dear brother,” said Liszt, smiling “that for the moment, I am no richer than you. Ilut that does not trouble me. I have credit, and I can make mon ey start from the keys of my piano. How ever, as you arc iu haste to leave Prague and return home, you shall nut bo delay ed by present want of funds.” Bo saying, lie opened another drawer, and taking out a splendcd medallion, gave it to the old man. “There,” said he, “that will do. It was a present made by the Emperor of Austria—his own portrait set in diamonds. The painting is nothing remarkable, but the stone are lino. Take them and dispose of them, and whatever they bring shall be yours. The old musician tried in vain to de cline so rich a gift. Liszt would not hear of a refusal, and tire old man at length withdrew, invoking the choicest blessings of Heaven on his generous ben efactor. He then repaired to the shop of the principal jeweler in the city, in order to sell the diamonds. Seeing a miserable dressed man anxious to dispose of magni ficent jewels with whoso value ho appear ed unacquainted, the master of the shop very naturally suspected his honesty; and while appearing to examine the dia ! mends with close attention, liu whispered a few words in the car of one of his assis tants. 'flic latter went out, and speedi ly returned, accompanied by several sol diers of police, who arrested the unhap py artist, in spite of his protestations of innocence. “You must first come to prison,” they said, “nftcrwa-ds you can give an expla nation to the magistrate.” The prisoner wrote a few lines to his benefactor, imploring his assistance.— Liszt. hastened to the jeweler. “Sir,” said he, “you have caused the arrest of an innocent man. dome with me immediately and let us have him re leased. lie is the lawful owner of the jewels in question, lor I gave them to him.” “JJut sir,” asked the merchant, “who arc you t" “My name is Liszt.” “I don’t know any rich man of that name.” “That may be; yeti am tolerably well known.” “Arc you aware, sir, that these dia monds are worth six thousands ilorius— that is to say, about live thousand guin eas, or twelve thousand francs?" “So much the better for him on whom I have bestowed them.” „But in order to make such a present, you must be very wealthy.” “My actual fortune consists of three du ats.” “Then you are a magician ?” “By no means; and yet, by just mov ing my fingers, I can obtain as much mon ey as I wish.” “You must lio magician !” “If you chooso I’ll disclose to you the magic I employ.” Liszt had soon a piano in tho parlor behind the shop. IIo opened it, and ran his fingers over tho keys; and then seized by sudden inspiration, he improvised one of those soul-touching symphonies peculiar to himself. As he sounded the first chords, a beau t fill young girl onteiod the room. While the melody continued, she remained speechless and immovable; then, as the last note died away, she cried with irresis tible enthusiasm “Bravo, Lisztl ’tis wondrous!" “Dost thou know him, then, my daugh ter ?” asked the jeweller. “This is tho first timo I have had tho pleasure of seeing or hearing him,” re plied she; “but I know that none living, save Liszt, would draw such sounds from the piano.” Expressed with grace and modesty, by a young person of remarkable beauty, this admiration could not fail to be more than flattering to tho artist. However, after making his best acknowledgements, Liszt withdrew in order to deliver the pris oner, and was accompanied by tho jewel er. Grieved by his mistake tho worthy merchant sought to repair it by inviting tho two musicians to supper. The hon ors of the tablo were done by his amia ble daughter, who appeared no less touch ed at the generosity of Liszt than aston ished at his talent. That night the musicians of the city serenaded their illustrious brother. The next day tho nobles and most dintingnish ed inhabitants of Prague presented them selves at his door. They entreated him to give some concerts, leaving it to him self to fix any sum he pleased as a remu neration. Then tho jeweler perceived that talent, even in a pecuniary light, may bo more value than tho most pre cious diamonds. Liszt continued to go to his house, and, to the merchant’s great joy, ho porceived that his daughter was the cause of these visits. I ie began to love tho company of tho musician, and the fair girl his only child, certainly did nut hate it. One morning, tho jeweler, coming to the point with German frankness said to Liszt:— “How do you liko my daughter ? "She is au angel 1” * A'hat do you think of marriage ?” “1 think so well of it, that I have the greatest possible inclination to try it.” "What would you say to a fortune of three million francs?’ “I would willing accept it.” “Well, we understand each other. My daughter pleases you, you please my daughter. Her fortune is ready; he my son-in-law,’' “With all mv heart.” The marriage was celebrated the fol lowing week. And this, according to the chronicle* of Prague, is a true account of the great and good pianist Liszt. Tiie Great Chinese Wall.—Some idea of the extent of China may be gath ered from a remark of Dr. Bowring, in a lecture on that country, recently deliver ed in England. He said that if all the bricks, stone and masonry of Great Bri tain were gathered together, they would not furnish materials enough for such a wall as the wall of China; and that if the materials in the building in London were put together, they would not mako the towers and turrets that adorn it, If Douglas is so groat a man now, and drunken, what would hobo if sober? The world will novor know. The politician who changed his princi ples to the winning party, gave as his se ven reasons lor doing it—A wife and six children.
