A child stood weeping at the gate Of La Pitie disconsolate, Asking td see her mother dear. ‘‘Begone;’’ the brutal porter cried, “loifr prayer is vain, she is not here.” know site is,” the child replied, “Oli, let me see her, 1 implore;” And still stie rapped the fastened door, Till one more kindly than the rest, Said, ‘‘Cease thy tears, take niy advice, And try to calm your troubled breast, Your mother’s gone to Paradise.” i “To Paradise ! Oh, where’s the way ?” She asked of every one she met ; They listened kindly, and all say, “The way is long, and sore beset With obstacles.” But Hope leads on And Piety supports her sinking heart; Faith encourages—it shall be dime ; And Charity fulfills her part; And the child hopes once more to see Her mother’s face, and with her be, Resolved at any sacrifice To find the way to Paradise. At length, upon a barren soil, Fatigue, and hunger, and the night Arrest her in her weary toil : A gentle shepherd sees her plight, And to a convent near doth lead her ; The sisters hasten forth to aid her. But all too late! she pales and trembles : Death, who parts and reassembles, ! To her mother soon unites her; i Heaven opens, God invites her— ! Unstained, and pure from earthly vice : ! The sinless child’s in Paradise. [From Thomas Noon Talfourd ] Thu Theatre ani> its Influences. —It is only in the theatre that any ini a,ure of real grandeur of humanity—any picture of generous heroism ami noble self sacrifices—is pourcil on the imagina tion, and sent warm to the hearts of the vast body of the people. There are eyes, familiar through months and years onlv with mechanical toil, suffused with natu a' tears. There are the deep fountains of hearts long encrusted by narrow cares, hurst open, and a holy light is sent in on | the long sunken forms of the imagination. which shone fair and goodly in boyhood by | their own light, but have since been seal i ed and fogotten in their “sunless trcasll j ries.” There do the lowest and most ig | norant catch their only glimpse of that ; poetic radiance which sheds its glory | around our being. While they gaze, they forget the petty c< ncorns of their own individual lot, and recognize and re joice in their kindred, with a nature capable of high enterprise, of meek suffering, and of defiance to the powers of agony and the grave. They are eleved and softened, into men. They are carried beyond the ignorant present time; feel the past and the fu'urc on tho instant: and kindle as they gaze on the massive realities of human virtue, or on those trary visions which aie tho glea ming foreshadows of of golden years | which hereafter shall bless the world. ; Their horizon is suddenly extended from l the narrow circle of low anxieties and selfish joys, to the farthest boundaries of 1 1 our moral horizon ; and they perceive, in clear vision, the rocks of defence for their j nature, which their fellow men have ! been privileged to raise. While they feel I that “which gives an v » of thing* above them,” their souls are expanded in the heartiest sympathy with the vast body of their fellows. A thousand hearts are swayed at once by the same emotion, as the high grass of the meadow yields as a single blade to the breeze which sweeps over it. Distinctions of fortune, rank, talent, age, all give way to the warm tide of emotion, and every class feels only as partakers in one primal sympathy, “ made of one blood,” and : equal to the sanctities of their being, j Surely the art that produces an effect I like this—which separates, as by divine j alchemy, the artificial from the real in l humanity—which supplies to the artisan in the capital, the place of those woods, I and free airs, and mountain streams, which insensibly harmonize the peasant’s char | actor—which gives tho poorest to feel the old grandeur of tragedy, sweeping by ! with sceptered hall—which makes the ! heart of the child leap with strange jov. j and enables the old man to fancy himself j ; again a child—is worthy of no mean place among tho arts which refine our i manners, by exalting our conceptions. The Sham Family. Mr.'Sham lives up town in n brown stone front, with damask ami luce at the ! windows. He is a respectable man.nl-1 wavs courteous and ready to do you a kindness, or to make an ingenious excuse if he ernnot. Mr. Sham biros his coach and horses by the year, atul bis handsome coachman, too; but, if he spoke of them, ho would tell you, in round terms, that his establishment cost him a cool two thousand; and he wouldn’t think of keep ing so expensive an equipage, only Mrs. Sham's health is delicate, and the little j Shams cooped up as they are in the city, . I need a daily drive out of town. Mr. | Sham sports a dasing watch, with heavy seal and chain, that look very much like 1 gold, owing to a singular custom of their | owner who uses a certain white powder ] and a piece ofbuekskinon them every mor ning; and nobody surmises that Mr. Sham would wear anything but gold. That worthy gentleman is constantly talking of his family across the water, all of whom are dukes and duchesses, lords and ladies. 1 and squires of high degree, lie is to come into possession of a fabulous fortune when i somebody dies, for whom lie Iras too sin- ! cere ;i respect to wish that consummation | devoutly. Ho is going to buy such and . such a country seat the next summer, it business will "be kind enough just to slack j a little; a very little, just long enough to j let him run up to L. or 1)., to survey the j premises and examine the deed. Everything belonging to Mr. Sham is j mortgaged, except bis wife and children, j and so are they, to ari inexorable degree j to Ultimate ruin'. Mr. Sham is a great | boaster; in plain language, Mr. Sham is a ; great liar; lie has lied so long, that the j poor man never knows when he tells j the truth himseif; indeed, has conscience only troubles him when lie Is not invent- j ing. Mrs. Sham !—a magnificent person in red velvet, and a grand match for her hus band. Dine with Mrs. Sham. Hear her regret that her head cook (a fabulous per sonage) was unfortunately taken sick, and is suffering up stairs with a headache.— Notice her reprimand to Harriot Jane, the eldest daughter, that she did not make ; that stupid Biddy put on the best set of silver. Hear her talk of the pleasure of her last year’s travelling tour, when she staid at home all the summer, shut up in the back part of her house. Behind her jewelry, paste and Irish diamonds; her lace—nothing hut sham in the place of the real. Listen to the stories she tells of her childhood; if you did not know that her mother was once an honest hard-wor king washwoman you would be tempted to believe that she had never taken a step on the cold ground in her life before she was married, and that in some way she was related to Queen Victoria or to Louis Napoleon. The little Shams are epitomes of both parents. They begin already to substi tute the false for the real. to brag of deeds they never performed; to talk of families they never visited ; and to watch each other closely, that there may be no discrepancies. Poor, unhappy little Shams! what a life they will lead! and if they should happen to fall from even the scale iu which they appear at present to be snugly balanced, I fear they will find apartments, in a strong bouse with iron bars at the windows, and whose degrada tion and discipline are anything but shams. [From the Boston Traveller.] Forty-two years at Sea. Captain Bowers, of the barque Mary Broughton, new in port, has been forty two years at sea, thirty-two of which he has been captain, and during that long period never experienced any serious dis aster, nor ever noted a protest. A sailor never left him in a foreign port; he never sent a man to the hospital, never buried a man at sea,nor ever had a law suit. These facts speak volumes in his favor. They show that he knows how to treat men, and hence their devotion to him. We know more than one captain who never carry even their officers a whole voyage, and who pride themselves upon being considered “tartars.’ Although Captain Bowers never was in a ship which touched the bottom, nor in o le which lost a main spar, it must not he supposed that he has never experien ced the storms and hurricanes peculiar to tlie sea. In the West Indies ho has seen whole fleets of vessels driven upon the keys and banks, and hundreds of lives lost; and upon our coast lias suffered the severe storms of many a winter; but, pro tected by a kind Providence, lie says lie lias been always able to bring his vessel safely into port. This, by many, may be considered good luck; hut in no situation of life is good luck more nearly allied to good management, than at sea. ('apt. Bowers says that under Providence he has many times saved his vessels when beset by storms, by having previously arranged in his mind how to act. Pleas ant weather is the season for thought— storms and disasters the time for action. in tieaitti uaptam Mowers lias Deen as remarkable as in the success of bis voyages. Ho never bad toothache, rheumatism, headache nor fever. Last voyage, for ! the first time, be sustained personal dam- j age. The spanker boom, in tacking ship, struck him on the bead so severely that be was unconscious for several days; but | now lie is as healthy as ever, and bids fair i to live bis “ three score and teu” and ten I more, without troubling bis friends to take care of him. High as be ranks among the sons of the j ocean, as a successful sailor, be is no less esteemed ashore by those who know him ' best. A single incident will show the man better than a yarn as long as the j main top bowline. He was once censur- j ed by one of the owners of a vessel, which he commanded, because he positively re fused to take a doubtful Custom House oath. ‘* Why,” said the man of com- j mcrec, “ tin y were only a pack of Span iards 1” “ True,” replied the captain, “ hut 1 was not swearing to the Spaniards, hut to God, and God, you know, is everywhere j present, and is not a respecter of persons, i 1 could not swear to a thing that was not j true." (Japt. Bowers, still commands the barque Mary Broughton, and will sail hence in a few days for Buenos Ayres.— May lie continue successful to, the end of life’s chapter, and find comfortable quar- I ters aloft wlfbu lie has slipped his earthly j moorings. “Much remains unsung,” as the tom cat remarked to the brickbat, when it ab ruptly cut short his serenade, Watches, Jewelry, &c. rx gold w a t c ii E s, rx ,/ E IV' E L It Y, & c .
