The Christmas Holidays are fast approaching and the young folks are already dreaming of Santa Claim. During the last two or three weeks eight or ten cou ples have been joined in the holy hands of wedlock. The white headed, the middled aged, have like the young ones, acted under the influence of'tj^e panic. To all we wish a pleasant journey over the sea of matrimony. We heartily con gratulate you upon your new state of ex istence, and sincerely hope that life to you all may be one scene of perpetual sunshine with Jno clouds to mar tire bright sky of your existence. May peace, prosperity and happiness attend you. and may the dove of love ever linger near, bringing joy and untold happiness. Last night the steamer Roanoke arrived at her wharf in Portsmouth, hav ing on board an Engine for the “I’nion Eire Company,” under the command of Capt. John C. Rogers. This engine was sent to New York about four months ago to be rebuilt. We have seen many En gines in our life, but we have never seen one that could compare with the “Union’ in any manner. On the front of the en gine is a beautiful picture, representing the “Deluge;” on the back is one repre senting “Air;” on the right hand side or condenser case is one representing “Gai ty;” on the left hand is one representing “Youth;” on the front is one represen ting “Commerce and Trade,” and on the back is one representing an “Indian Girl.” The Company will parade in a slio.it time, when our citizens will have a chance of seeing this truly beautiful piece of workmanship. Suspicious.—Night before last about 7$ o’clock a small boat containing two men pulled out from the wharf near the Ferry and partially crossing the dock, stopped as if waiting for something. On the approach of the Ferry Boat it moved backwards, as if intentionally, until it gained a position immediately ahead of the coming steamer, when it again be came stationary. Fortunately the steamer was stopped in time or else there would have been a coroner’s jury to be summoned the next day'. Those who occupied the small boat evidently had some intention for acting in such a strange manner. Those who witnessed the behaviour of the men looked upon them with much .suspicion. This morning a friend informed ns that it was^rumored in the Navy Yard that a large discharge would soon take place in the stone mason’s department. The foundation of the report is that a very large quantity of stone has just arrived at the Yard already dressed for use. Why could it not have been shipped here in its rough state, and worked up by our own Mechanics, is a question yet to be answered. Accident to the Steamer Louis iana.—We regret to have to announce an accident to tins steamer, which hap pened tIti- morning oil' the Horse Shoe, in breaking nor shaft, which will cause her to be hauled oil the line for 2 or 3 weeks. She encountered very heavy weather attended with snow on her passage last night; which, however, had nothing to do with the breaking of her shaft. We un derstand this enterprising company in tend chartering another steamer immedi ately to put in her place, till the neeessu I ry repairs are effected. SvvKAitiNO,—This i. a pract.ire that m man sin>uld have. il i an ugly one, ami can iId no good for any man. but how i mncli more is it revolting when we .heat j small boys uttering all kinds of profane | language. Yesterday as we were walk ■ ing around the city, looking for items we came across a crowd of boys numbering about eight or ten who were discussing the question as to who should be the ow ner of a poor half dead pigeon, which one of them held in his hand—but such lan guage as they made use of surpassed any thing of the kind we ever heard. They were not satisfied with cursing each other —but were actually cursing each others Mother. Actuated by feelings of pity,we spoke to them and told them that it was very wrong to use such language, when one little fellow about six years of age looked us in the face and asked if we had anything to do with it. We came to the conclusion to continue on our journey. “Mistakes will happen,” tec.—Mr. das. JO. Jones was after us about a mis take in his advertisement of hams yester day. He wrote that the hams are selling at 16 cents, and the compositor made him say 12 cents per lb. We notice w.th much pleasure, that the Ferry boat “Norfolk,’'’ was placed on the line yesterday. The Norfolk lias been thoroughly repaired and is now in a fine condition. The steamer “Union,” has been with drawn from tin* line for repairs, and after she is finished the steamer “Portsmouth” will undergo tile necessary repairs. Fight.-—Last night on High Street, Portsmouth about seven o’clock, a crowd of Marines numbering eight—under the influence at king alcohol, got into a dis pute together; words ran high, and in a short time they had a regular knock down and drag out. There is no telling Imw Min “muss” would have ended, had not some gentlemen intel'ered, and put a stop to their proceedings. The Weather.—Yesterday, as has been before announced was a very disagreeable day; last night about 8 o’ clock it commenced raining and contin ued until half past four o’clock this morn ing, the wind changing to Northwest. At seventeen minutes past seven o’clock this morning we had the pleasure of bidding old “Sol” a welcome, and at present wri ting we have every promise of a clear and agreeable day.
