I THE MAY FESTIVAL A Great Occasion Grows Greater as it Progresses. What Is Thought of ItMusic for the Closing Concerts. The crowd at the May Festival last night exceeded in sise that at any previous con cert. Every seat was filled, and wherever standing room could be made available -for hearing it was occupied. There were sev eral thousand persons who had admission tickets without seats, and considered them selves fortunate in being able to secure a good place even to stand and hear the mu sic. The feature of the concert, and that which attracted the unusually large at tendance, was the production of Mr. Dud ley Buck's prize composition, "Scenes rom Longfellow's Golden Legend." lne piece proved a delightful one in all re spects, and was thoroutjhly enjoyed by lov ers of any class of music. The scores are not difficult and the cho rus mastered it with comparatively little effort, but there is about it a sparkle and brilliancy that makes it a most winning and enjoyable composition. It seems to admirably combine the beauties of operatic and oratorio music. The listener is en raptured with the brilliancy of what re minds him of "Berlios,'' and is then lost in admiration at the erandeur of strains that appear to belong to some magnificent oratorio. The s do parts were uiosc ele eantlv sune. Miss Norton achieving her crowninc success of the FestivaL At the conclusion Mr. Dudley Buck was loudly called for and in response he was escorted to the staire by President Pendle ton, where he was warmly applauded by cnorus and audience and heartily congrat ulated bv Mr. Thomas. The prize composition formed the first part of the programme. Tne Second part consisted of two scenes from the third act of Wacner's "Goettsedammerung" and overture from "King Lear," by Berlioz. The programme was a magnificent one, but was too lone. With one scene instead of two of the Wagner selections it would have been more satisfactory. To-day's Programme. THIRD AFTERNOON CONCERT. There was the usual trouble last night looking for carriages. Mr. Thomas will to-night have a talk with the chorus preparatory to reorganiz ing at once for the Festival of 1882. The tickets to the Cary concert for Satur day afternoon are selling rapidly, and a tremendously large audience is promised. The programme is one of great merit, and full of attractions. Prof. Carl-Zerrahnt of Boston, the emin ent leaaer, is entnusiaanc ever tue cnorus work. He said yesterday; "I should like to talk with every member of that chorus, and tell tbem how grandly they have ac complished their work." From Mf. Hasrd's dispatch to (he New Yrk Tribunet "The success of the prize composition was most emphatic. Every thine in it was most heartily applauded. The Monks' Revel was highly relished lis a delicious bit ol mnsical humor, the repre sentation of a sort of a churchly ballet, if I may use the expression, in which we caught sight of flipping cassocks and dancing sandals capering around t ie Mis 8.. Is and Graduals. The Drinking Kong. which was given not in Mr. BteUruan's clever translation, but in the musical Latin original, is one ol the best pieces of the kind 1 know of. J he mixture ol solo and chorus effects are all excellent, and all made a due impression, although in the finale of the first number Mr. Whiting, who sat at the organ, failed to accompany the chant as he should have done. The March, which is beautifully scored came out magnificently, and so did the concluding chorus, which brines the work to a fine climax." - From Mr. Upton's dispatch to the Chi caro Tribune: "I he golden iiEQEND. ine periormance of the work was an elegant one in every respect, except in the twelfth scene, which had to be stopped after a few bars and re commenced, owing to a false start by Mr. Harvey, the tenor, that threatened serious results. Apart from this slip Mr. Harvey sane in fins style, developing a delightful quality oi voice ana some very ciear, urn )iant and strong high tones. Id two num bers of the duo, with Miss Norton in tne oblicato of the third scene, he created a de cided sensation and was rewarded with en thusiastic plaudits. Miss Norton sane the 'Elsie Solo' very sweetly and in excellent taste, and also came in lor a generous snare of the general enthusiasm. Mr. Whitney nf tha 'Friar's Drinking Bong witn reiiuine flavor ot the vinous sort, and aroused the nearest approach to a furor durlnir tha evening. The 'Sailors' Chorus' for Mannerchor was given in a stirring, breesy way that was refreshing." Hew Brlhten (Pat.) The drive tQ Spriug Grove Cemetery, Clifton, the Zoological Garden and High land House, announced as the programme for yesterday's entertainment of the Chat tanooga city officials by the Southern Rail road, was carried out according to the card and was much enjoyed by all. After a visit to the Cemetery, the party drove through Clifton, with its exquisite villas and grounds, ana tnence to tne Zoo, where lunch was spread and the animals inspected. From here the partv were taken through Mount Auburn and Walnut Hills to Eden Park and thence to dinner at the Highland House at 8 o'clock, when there was the flow of soul that prandial delecta tion engenders in all well-regulated official assemblages. ..v 3 IV - A . jnr. ureenwooa proposed me toast or "ChattanooRa," to which Mayor Temple responded happily. Gov. Bishop uext responded to the toast of "The Cincinnati Southern Railroad," and inooncliasion proposed as a sentiment. "(Jnattanooga ana uer enterprises may they prosper in the future as they have in the past," to winch. Alderman Wise, of Chattanooga, responded. Mr. McQuffv in a brief speech proposed "The Southern Con nections of the Cincinnati Southern Kail road," to .which Senator Hawkins, of Georgia, responded. Alderman Harris responded pleasantly to the toast of "The Blue and the Gray." Speeches were also made by Ex-Mayor Hill, Mr. McGuffey, President Dirr, Mr. Sidney Maxwell, Lovett and Gieenwood. Mr. J. M. McAfee, of Georgia, responded to the toast '"lhe City of Atlanta." It appears that Mayor Jacob and the City Council of Cincinnati were not invited by the Trustees of the Railroad to join the en tertainment of our Chattanooga officials, hence their ubsence yesterday from the pleasant junketings. As the visit was to some extent a business one and with the Railroad officials, it ought not, and we pre sume will not, cause heart-burnings that they chose to extend their hospitality in their own way. The majority of the Chattanooga excur sionists, who came up last Tuesday on the special train seemed by Messrs. Griffls & Saunders, left this n o-ning at 8 o'clock for home. The city officials who came with them but were not of the excursion party, will remain nere until to is evening and will return by the regular trains, 'Squire Harris and some other members of the party expect to go back via Louisville and Nashville, taking in the Centennial at the latter city. Such of the party as remain over to-day are enjoying tne attractions of the city in such manner as suits each indi vidual fancy, the project for their collective entertainment having been relinquished.
