We (wll the particular Attention of our
naturalired eitien whooted the recent Ret
publican and Know Ko'hing ticket to the
abova paragraph, sent out from llaltimore
by the "Reporter of the Associated Press
who ie himself member of the opposition,
and who will not be charged with making
the matter any worse than it really was. It
ehowi plainly what will be done with adopti
ed eitineni where the feeling of hatred to
the foreign bora exfeu In the freshness f
1Sj4, and where the power may be safely
exerolsed. JWe have eioasiar acoounts nf the
abuse of adopted cUSious at tiio polls where
the Republican strength was overwhelming
at the recent elections. '
It is not too late to again look Into this
matter of Know Nothingl.tn; and as the
election !n this Stat ie over., we cannot be
charged with getting up a humbug; issue to
gull any body. It will be remembered that
in 1854, when it became evident that i se
crot element was at work throughout the en
tire eountry that threatened to overwhelm
everything, the Journal of this city at once
abnndoned its position in the whig rnnks-
was the first to desert the party end .took
a bold and defiant position for the new and
cret organiiathn wh'rah hd suddenly ariien,
and whose main idea was the oppression and
political degradation of all .who were not so
fortunate aa to be born in this oountry.
No exceptions were made all adopted citi
zens were to bo cnt off for at least 21, years
from any right whatever as cititens. And
this it was declared, was "only the beginning
of the end!" -'It was to be the first step to
wards forever prohibiting any person of for
eign birth from participating, in any way, in
the affairs of government in the United
States! These odious and unjust doctrine
were publicly proclaimed, and were advoi
cated in the most offensive way possible.
Those who refused to acquiesce were at once
proscribed, and they were publicly and pri
vately told that they should be put dawn.
The foreign born, as the new system gained
strength, were insulted, and if they protest,
ed against the abuse heaped upon them,
they wore beaten like dogs. If they resent,
ed these outrages they were shot down like
brutos. These allegations are true, are i
within the memory of every man of
to-day.
The secret cabals increased astonishingly,
and in the elections of 1854 tbey completely
overwhelmed the country, carrying by force
of numbers, fraud, violenoe, and murderi
nearly every election precinot in the oountry.
During all this time, the Democracy stood
up valliantly for the rights of adopted citi
sens, and fell with them in tho struggle.
Tiiey had ever shown themselves the friends
of the oppressed of all nations, and from the
organization of our Government to the pres'
ent day, wo defy them to point to an act of
the Democracy whorein .they have in any
manner forfeited the friendship and grati
tude of adopted citiiens
The Know Nothing whirlwind having
swept over .the country, and threatened to
destroy all our political economy worth pre
serving, and prostrated the best interests o1
the people, A powerful reaction was the re
sult, and the party went down as suddenly as
it came up. The "sober, second thought'' of
tho masses of honest men created a revul
sion in favor of law and order, and the
rights of freemen, and peace once more
reigned over our distracted country. This
was a signal for the breaking up the Oppo
sition. Engaged in the forefront ranks of this
disgraceful tirade against the foroignlorn
the leaders of this bloody crusade against
adopted oititens were the editor of the
Dayton Journal as chief bugleinan; and F,
P. Cuppy, E. A. Parrott, and others on the
llepublioan ticket, just elected by the votes
of the very men whom they then attempted
to degrade! Cuppy and Parrott were the
most active men in this county, in tryiDg to
disfranchise adopted citiiens, and preveut
the foreign born from ever exercising in this
country the rights of freemen; and yet, by
the votes of these very men (whom, if they
did not succeed in degrading, it was the
fault of the Democracy) they have euooedi
ed in triumphing -over the party who have
been the life-long friends of the- adopt,
ed population of our oountry, and bave
made, from the organisation of the govern
ment down to the present day, very many
sacrifices for! Had it not been for the
demooratia element which is now being
prostrated by their assistance, the adopted
citizens of tbia oountry to-day would not
have had any mora rights aye, not as, many
than the negroes. ; :u: .... 'K
It is now the time to . look at ,(Mnttfti
- aright The nigger issue w, for tiie present,
settled in Ohio. It did noi.'janiount any
more than the snuff which t hi imposition
got into the eyes of the voters on last, Tups
day. Will any man of oommon sense be
lieve that these. Know Nothing gonUeiaen
think any inure of adopted jpltizeni now than
they did. when they wars running ore r tie"
oountry getting stKsew Kotbiufod,-..,!
and pressing men into the Order in corn'
fields, hay mows, shops, 4c! It is too lute
now to help this matter, but a reeurranea of
these things may be prevented - We men
tion the Bubjeot now, that our adopted citii
seas who voted for these men at against
men who ibught against their odious doo
trines, may fully understand the matter.
We hope that in tbe interim between thig
and a subsequent eleotion, tbey may sgret
with at that men who would four years
ago deprive them of all their political rights,
are not the men to receive their support,
W will reour to tbe tutijeot again.

asksd his co-operation and aid, and were
treated with iadinereae that fnaetioaary
assuring them that there eras no good res
to apprehend that all ths voter ol ths
city would not be V-inbled to go t ths polls
unmolested, and exercise their rights. 1 The
Sheriff of the oonnty of Baltimore also fteted
sympathy and harmony with ths Mayor,
and the result was that In many of the
Wards the same lawless conduct waa enaoti
as on previous occasions. We tee no
way for the citizens of Baltimore ' but the
vindication of their constitutional rights by
force. ; Such oppression as they havs sub

and the only wonder is that a remedy of that
kind has not heretofore been applied.
