Oooo Adticb. Gen. Atkins, who was del
fouled for Congress In Tenncsefl, was invi
ted by the Democratic members of the Leg
stature of that Htnte, to deliver an addre.ia
upon the political topics of the day. In his
declining, he makes the following excellent
suggestions.
".Mr recent defeat has left no foiling of
disoont or indiffcrenoe in toy bosom 1 am
aa earnost in the adrocitcy of the prinui.
pies of the Uemoeratio party now, while the
cloud is over me, aa when 1 basked in the
sunlight of Tiotory. That party is tho only
hope of the country, ana time win vinaioute
that opinion. Events daily transpiring un
erringly point to it as the oniv organization
in all the land upon which the patriot oun
found any hope lor the future of this great
Government. Nor need we despair of iu
ultimate success. It is to bo reu, ruttod that
there are divisions in our ranks, but they
ere principally about speculative theories
out of which practioal issues mity never
arise. In the practical operation of the
Uovernment, jara and discordances may uc
our sufficient to clog its wheels, then it will
be time enough to remove obstructions and
repair the dieproportioriod parts. In thnt
event, the intelligence and patriotism of the
Uemoeratio party will be equal to the tnk
Every feeling of my heart is to exhort all
good Demoorals to harmony harmony for
the success of Democracy, end through
them the perpetuity of the Union. 1 would
not counsel any cne to the abandonment ol
the prinoiple, but I would plead with all to
throw away as miBcinevous, an unuicncos
about men and unessential and impractical
ble questions. When that is done, the
great field of 1860 becomes one grand tri
umphal march for our leader, whoever he
may be.
The Caloric Engine in Printing. The
Northampton (Miisd ) Gazette thus records
the triumphs of its new caloric engine :
It goes "like a dock' Puffing and blow
ing, it tugs away at its work like a toy at
his stent, liundreds of people have beeu
to see it ''What makes il go?' usks one.
"Where is the watery" asks another. "What
the deuce won't they get up ncxi?'' And
on It goes. "Whats that blowing on?
That is the esoape of hot air. When more
heat is generated than is needed to drive the
press, it is passed off through the escape
pipe. No water is used. A fire is built in
the little furnace and the wheel set iu mo
tion, and away it goes. It needs no atten
tion any lurtuer than to keep the lire burn
ng. Any boy can manage it. And tceiji.s
driving the press, it gives all tho hout neces
sary to warm the room in the coldest
weather, it oan consume but little luol,
and therefore cannot cost much to run it.
It is the cheapest power in the world. VV'htn
first set up the draft was not good, and it
failed to show its power; but that difficul
ty boa been , overcome, and now it "goes
like a top." Three cheers for the caloric
printer I
Catholic Education The Cincinnati
Telegraph is somewhat exercised about the
deficiency in the present system of Educe
tion in the Catholio sohools. It says:
Don't be afraid of argument, don't shy
off from a syllogism aa you would from
a snake. Make the child learn to think and
reason, to be able to give an account of tha
faith that is in him. lc is well enough to
talk pretty things abont the Blessed Virgin
in a Sodality of young ladies, hutOod help
them if their instruction is confined to that.
The only way to the heart is through reason,
we oan persude only when we have oou
vinced. Flowers of all kinds belong to
Mary, the flowers of Rhetoric as well as the
roses and lilies of the field, but they are
frail creatures, they wither and die, and love
for the blessed Virgin will die with them
unless it is based on the great dogiuutic fact
of the Incarceration, unless we know and
appreciate the theological connection be
tween Mother and son.

IA.lt was for a long time suppoacd that
Mount Washington, of the White Mountain
group, was the highest peak east of ths
Rooky Mountains. But this honor must
now be definitely conferred upon f uioky
Mountain, belonging to the lllack Mountain
croup, and situated in Jackson county , North
Carolina, near the Tennessee line. Prof.
John Le Conte, of Houth Carolina Cjll"gc,
accompanied by Mr, Clingman and .Mr.
Buckley, has made eoourate barometric tb
serrations of te various heights composing
this group during the past summer. Those
gentlemen, and Prolessor Uuyot, have i
certain ed that North Carolina has no loss
than fifteen peaks higher than Mount Wash
ington. According to Captain Cram, of the
United Suites Coast Survey, the bight of
Mount Washington is 6,2'Jli feet. The elc
ration of Smoky Mountain is 0,737 foot.
