Ma, EulToa: Having made a trip from Day
ton to Springfield and back, by railroad, to
day, (for the first time, in daylight) and hav
ing traveled the same rosd in a political pro.
cession, In 1840, the following traiu of thought
passed before my mind's eye, like a grand pan
orarna of objects, displsying tho infinite skill
man's handiwork and nature's artist. Being
smtril , m the South side of th ear, going Eaat

ila quiet i nbltanls, running towar4s Daytoa,
and I thought its object might be to imbilie
the spirit of progress and enterprise of which
was partly divested by the institution of
iron horsss; and in a few momenta Ehon came
rushing down the hill, apparently ruuning a
root race for the aame purpose. But soon
bsw Springfield approaching, with like deter
minstion to emigrate. At this moment the
"horse" gave a terrific, snort and cane to a halt,
and I found myself iu a lively city with atately

spirit of enterprise in every avenue. The edi

to Instil into my mind a feeling of admira

institutions."
Th tim to return having arrived, I took
aeat on the North aide of the train, or car,
obaerva the onward march, when Hsrtxler'a,
Oaborn, Harries' and Harshmsnville flitted by
with tha fleetness of a bird newly fledged and
stately proportions. And when the city of
Dayton again hove in eight, with all its din
and clatter of milla, factories, machine, shops,
canala, railroads, sad every apparent requisite
a great metropolis, the curtain fell, and I
found myself at home.
Having a few leisure momenta I determined
compare notes with niy trip of 1640, I
found tbst the railroad depot below First street
had usurped tha place of the old bridge, and
that the citizens, in their eovetousness, hsd oar.
riad off th river, seized ou the play grounds
th finny tribe, sod erected stable, on the

having dammed np the water, they tor up th
