TREATMENT OF CONSUMPTION—SECOND STAGE. In my 1ri let'pr, i explninsi tha prlnai. pies upon which tha ours of oonsumptinn. in the first stag, or that of (tray tubsroulixa tton, is foundmi, and tliit this result la oeri tain in lha granter nnmbsr of cum, by means of Medio..ted inhalation. I propose to discuss tha anode in which tha cure of the aeoond stage, or fallow tnberoulittionf la aooomplished. The tuberoloa, from being gray and glistening, become oonrerted into yellow, ohoesy matter; they may exist isolm ted, or Ihey may eonlesoa and form masses of various sis a. When they soften, it is from tha outside to the eentcr, whioh ao oounta for the appearanoe noted in the ex neotoration, in the eeoond and third stages. During tha first period, it is stioky, and wn rioa in appearanoe, from transparenoy to a dark, blneish gray. When the yellow to) beroles soften, this expectoration beoomee streaked with yellow, and at last altogether yellow, and small speoks of eheesy matter ate found interspersed; these are the oentere of yellow tuberoloa whioh have esoaptd softening. The chemioal oom position is changed from that of the gray tuberole, aa they lire found to oantain a considerable quantity of carbonate and phosphate of lime. It is upon the eiistenoe of these insoluble salts, that the choioe of inhalants is made. 11 we oan introduoe into the lungs, vapors whioh possess the property of attacking these insoluble salt of lime, and oonvertiog them into soluble ones, this will produce liquefaotion of the tuberoles, and their con sequent absorption ot expeotoration. Those familiar with chemistry, will easily reoall to their memories several vapors certain to efieot this chemioal change, Valuable pa pers on this subject were written tifteen years age by Mr. Murray, M. H. C, 8, It. and Dr. Coudet, of Paris, but seem most unaocountably to have been overlooked by the profession. The looal disease being thus removed by Inhalation, lot it be the physician's eare to pay striot attention to the removal of any looal causes that may have induced the complaint, and to adopt judicious, constitutional treatment to rente dy the deprared state of the blood, that fa' vors the deposit of tuberclos. A very few years ago, bleeding, depletion and low diet, were universally resorted to for the curt (?) of consumption, with the effect of removing every chance of a spontaneous healing, and aooelerating death. The folly of tbis aourse has at last been recognised by the profession and the opposite plan is now pursued. It is by combining a looal and a general treat ment, that Medicated Inhalation is so sua- oessfut; it operates directly on the seat of disease and removes the local afl'oction, while the general treatment puts the system at large. in such a state, that the blood is so improved aa no longer to dopoait fresh tu berole. In this stage, the proportion of re. ooveries is not so groat as in the first ; but still a very great number recover by means of Inhalation, and of oourse the earlier it is resorted to, the better the prospect of cure. Those who! expectorate most on rising in the morning, and peroeive yellow streaks in the spit, have reached the second stage; and when this beoomes docidodly yellow, the third stage is nigh at hand, if not already begun, when the chances of suocesbful treat, ment are very much lessened. lae next letter will contain an exposition of the mode of oure in the third etage of I'll thi sis. N. B. WOLFE, M. D. Physician for diseases of the Lungs and Throat, No. 53, Ninth street, Cincinnati O. r. M. I have propared a "Circular for the use of those who may wish to consult me respecting my method of treating diseases of the lungs, who reside at a distanco from the oity, or who oannot viBit me personally. The oiroular contains a list of questions rei lating to the symptoms by which oonsumpi tion and its different varieties are known, and by answering whioh oorreotly, persons from abroad are enabled to send me a cor reot statement of their condition for advice and treatment In this manner, I am ena- abled to put persorsunder troatmentby ruedi ioated Inhalation at their own homes, in all parts of the oounty where express facilities are afforded, by sending them medicines, in, baler, and full directions for their nee. Many have thus been restored to health, who to all human seeming were hurrying into the eonBumptive's grave.
