It is conduc ted on an unexceptionable system, and guests seem to be highly pleased with the entertain ment each evening, Great attractions are of fered this evening, Chosch Pais. By reference to toother col umn it will be seen that the TJnlveraaliat 8o ciety of thie city will give a Holiday Fair, commencing neat Saturday evening, at Huston Hall. Several novel and interesting festures will be introduced at this Fair mattera about which we will speak more at length. We are assured it will be the most attractive affair ever attempted here. JawsLar Sals. The sale of select jewelry waa commenced at the store of Mr. Ruff, on Main street last night. V learn that a large amount of goods wsa sold. The sale will con- tinue every day and evening until all is sold. tT We notice that the little girls are improv ing the snow, like the boys, by riding about on little sleds. Last evening the declivities on either side of Jefferson atrset canal bridge were occupied by the girls, who seemed to enjoy themselves amaa'ngly in "riding down hill;'' bile they fell off and rolled about in the snow just as though they liked it. It remind ed us of old times, when we were a boy, and used to ride down hill with the gills.' Their riuging, merrie voices was like sweetest music on the clear, cold, night air. Burglaries in tbs Cocntrt. During the night of the lOih inst, at Caatine, Darke county, three houses were entered and rob bed of articles of value the grooery of Mr, Lane, from whioh the rasoala got fifty dol lars; the offioe of Dr. Ford; from whioh they got lot of medicines, unfortunately neither arsenio nor stryohnine; and the post office, from whioh they took twenty six dollars worth of postage stamps, a package of dead letters, and some letter reoeived belonging to individuals not called for, were tolen. Soma of our adroit city burglar must bs prowling in the oountry, laying in for the holiday. Gold. W received this morning, by the overland msil, s letter from our former towns man D. Webster Clegg, of Weavsrville, Trin ity Co., California, giving us some interesting information about gold, and aending us a earn, pi of the article, together with an order for the Weekly Empire. W will endeavor to keep our friend posted on the events transpiring in this Valley. Naw Yiaa'a Addskas Our D 1 will present the patrons of the Empire with a New Year'a Address on the Saturday morning be fore New Year's Day. It is one of the qusinta est, raciest thing ever printed. Those who want to read it should subscribe for the paper, as it will only be printed in the columns of the Empire. Paor. Caosai. This gentleman has disposed of his stock of music and musical instruments, end will hereafter give his entire time to giving instruction to those who desire to improve in vocal and inatrumental music. Mr. 0. is a master of his profession, and with an experi ence of aixteen years as a professional musician, he is certainly competent to give instructions in the science. He will also tune pisnos, and repair all kinds of musical Instrument. The Professor's addresa ia 130 Main street, sign of the Golden Harp. Up with the flag of disunion, that we may have a glorious union of our own. W m. Lloyd (J tr firs. I have no doubt but the free and slave states ought to be eeparated. In our telegraph column will be seen an ac count of a meeting of medical atudente in Philadelphia, and of their resolution to with draw from Norlhera Colleges They leave Philadelphia to the number of about 3001 It ia not to be supposed that the Southern stu dent of the Philadelphia Oollegea are differ ently constituted from those at other Colleges in the North; it is fair to suppose that a very general withdrawal of them will tak place from inititution of learning North of the Maaon and Diaon line. The withdrawal of Southern trade from the North ia serious. It is known that a manufae turing house in New York, which employs leveral hundred hind, had Southern order to a very large (mount countermanded tb other day, thua throwing out of employment the mechanic, and involving the house in ruin. This is but on case in a thousand. Wa hear of them every day. In the Miami Valley we are beginning to feel the effects of Northern fanaticism and offensive antagonism to the South. We ar credibly informed that order from the South for trees have been countermand ed to the amount of $3,000 or 4,000. This counter-Irritation will be apt to work out a solution of the question of sectional agitation. It ia now becoming "a question of the pocket;" a gam that two can play at. The Ball Stopped. The State Board of Agriculture ha at last decided what we had supposed they would hav done long ago that the migratory eyas tern of State Fairs is unprofitable. Their de cision is dead in the face of our neighbor of the Firemen 'a Bsselte; but aa the thing ia did, w cau't juat now imagine how he i going to help it It ia not yat decided where the Inati. tution will be held yearly, but aa the Oincini natiana will bid vary heavily for it, wa pre sums it will be tied up aomewhere in the vicin ity of that city. A Suggestion. Wa would auggest to Mr. Vallendigham, in view of the terrible opposition of the Dayton ournal, that he apply a small amount of the needful, by way of a bribe, and our word for it, they would be aa gentle and amiable aa ucking dovee. It were never known to sup port one of its eten tribe, without a liberal dona lion for that Oonsider tho case. Val EYE TOOTH. 17 The fact is, our pstrons must contrive to do with as little local and general news as possible during these Holiday timee. We have little time for anything but to woac. for the ntareai and pleasure of our customers. For these little delinqoencie we will make amend shortly. W notice that our Cincinnati ei changea do not contain uear their usual amount of raiding, the Holiday demand on their col umn being unusually heavy. Ooawia'a Smecbss. We have received from the Publiahere, the Messrs. Comly, of the Day ton Journal, a copy of Oorwio' Speeches. Th work is preceded by en excellent portrait, and a memoir of Mr. Oorwin an interesting sketch of the gallant Wagon Boy compiled by Isaac Strohm, Esq., a gentleman well qualified for the task. The book ia interesting Con. win ia an interesting epeaker, and a memoir of him ia, in part, a history of the West and we believe it will be generally read. U" Douglaea A Co'a Store, Lowe's Building, Main street, seems to hv been taken possess ion of by thoae who are after Holiday goods! It is crowded all the time; and aa there are plenty of polite clerks, bueinea is put through with courtesy and dispatch. Wbisxt Daoorixo. A wagon loaded with whiskey, when pawing over the railroad on Third atreet, yeeterday, waa upset by one of the wheele getting fast in th rat. Th whisky wsnt down suddenly. Below will be found a personal explanation from Mr, Vallendigham io regard to the report of hi speech io the N.Y. Herald. The report er seemed to hsve mad hard work of It. Th Washington Star for exsropU reports him ss hsvlng said "that ha wss not a Southern man, had little or no sympathy with it beyond the tie of aeommon language and a common oountrj ." Just the reveres of this appeared In the Herald, and in the dispatches Weat. But the meanest, loweet, most unmitigated rascal ity wae perpetrated io our town, and the crim inal had not the decency to retract. Mr. Vcllandigham. Will th gentleman yield me the floor for a personal explanation? Mr. John Uochraue. Uertainiy. Mr. Vallandigham. Mr. Clerk. I have a very elrong distaste for personal explanations, and did not think I ever should ask the indul gence of the liouse to make one; nor would I now aak it were it not that the matter relate directly to the debates of the Houae. In the usually accurate and reliable report of th New York Herald 1 find the following, pur porting to be a portion of the speech made by me upon Thursday: "Did the candidate Mr. Bherman of that party ae Speaker riae to disavow such sentiK menls (tending to evclte servile insurrection)? No; no such sign of disavowal was made." Sir, I said precisely the reverse; distinctly staling that the candidate for Speakership on the Republican side did lustantly riae and die- avow inem. Again: "I am bound to th South; I am identified with the Smith and her slave institutions." I said nothing of the sort, or resembling it, but just the reverae. I aaid I waa not north ern man, least of all a "northern man with aoulhern principles" thsi I waa not a south ern man, not "true to the South" as South, nor to southern priuciples; but that I wss a western man; and within and eubordinale to the Con stitutton snd lbs Union a western seclienaiiaf. There were other minor errors in the summa ry of the Herald, which will appear in the of ficial report of the epeech. Bo far from my having made, aa haa been aaid, an "ultra aoulh ern epeech," I did make a epeech which waa ultra and wholly weatern. I said nothing about slavery in Terriloriea. City Council. CITY COUNCIL CHAMBER. TUESDAY EVENING, Dec. 20, 1859. Present Messrs. Decker, Wigglin, Phillips, Bimm, Shank, Kiersled, Boyle, Gilliland, But, Lutx, Thomaa and Bomberger. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. The committee to whom was referred the subject of obtaining the right of wsy from Xeuia Avenue to Warren street, presented a route for the consideration of council, which wss laid over one week. The report of A. A. Butterfield, Oily Clerk, of the receipte and expendituree of the cityf from June 30. 1858 to Sept. 1, 1859, waa read and referred to finance committee. The committee to whom waa referred the petition of Wm. Seligman, for compensation for numbers alleged to have been placed upon housea whose owners refnse to psy for them. reported that according to the ordinance author laing the putting up of numbers, Mr. S. was not entitled to anything from the city, and that, moreover, the numbers were not euch as provided for by the ordinaaee, and were not accepted by the Mayor, who holds a bond for the faithful performance of th contract. Th report wa received. The Oity Solicitor presented a report on the subject of the alleged nuisance on the corner of Ludlow and Sixth streets. Received, snd ordered to be placed on file. The City Solicitor also made a supplements' ary report upoo the openiug of Pulaski atreet, which was received, and th City Clerk au thorised to draw ao order for t7,IJ7, an amount not provided for in the assessment. After allowing the bills presented, Council Ignorance or Worse. Mr. Editor! If snytbing from th Journal could surprise me nowAdajs Us' last charge against Mr, Vallandigham of suppressing his speech would certainly do it. Is th sditor oi that paper ao lg norant aa not to know that th manuscript of sv. ary day' sroceedings are always suhmittsd to tb msmbsrs who apoks that day for their revision and correction? And does hs not know that at the present session the speeohes of E. Joy Morris aad of Reuben Davis havs been published lb the Globs revised and corrected by himself"!
