The ol iiect of the meeting having been sta ted to be to pay respect to the memory of departed member, Dr. tlAiHKN, a committee wus appointed which reported the following preamble and resolutions: Whkkkam, It has pleased the All-Wise De- sposer of Kvents to remove front our midst hr death our venerable associate, lr. As a man and cititen he was without reproach in all the re lations of his life, justly (listiiiiruished for his benevolent impulses and the sajlleas purity his cnuracmr, as a physician ne was ever kiwi and sympathetic, diligent iu his attention the sick, and solicitous for their recovery, whilo lie enjoyed the unlimited confidence and resiect of all his professional brethren ; as Christian his light shown with unwavering and increasing brilliancy vital religion was the snpHrt of his munhood and the solaco Ins declining years. Number 8. [Special Correspondence Daily Empire.] GERMANTOWN, July 19. a a a of to a of " 'Tww not what aue-lnl Dot a lit af II." ' Pear Kmtrire: We failed getting our Iet ter in the oflice yesterday morning iu time for the nor I hern mail. We confess to letting down slightly on the fatigue of the eienrsion of the day before, and we overslept oureelf. Hut as the matter was not of mnch account. the local readers of the Kmpikb lost little by the fnilure. Now, this is all we can conceive necessary to say on the subject t e noticed by the UMriKK ol yesterday that you nuve nod a very severe storm In I'nytnn, and thnt soma damage was done by the light- niuir. e noticed the? threataninff anncar- nncce north nnd east of us, and remarked that Dayton was prolwbly getting a complete soak ing. Although it threatened to rain here early tn tho morning, the Captain o(our little band insisted on going, as we had agreed, to the river, "rain or shine." A. T. T., whose estimable lady is a semi-invalid, not having yet fnirly recovered from a lengthy and seri ous illness, favored remaining at home, claim ing that it looked very much like rain, and thut "prudence was the better part of valor." Hut on L npU (Iiinckki. Insurinir to keep the pnrty nYu, (he had a quantity of cold ham and dried beef along!) our ehafilain aequiesced, and the wagons proceeded riverward. An in ventory of the contents of the vehicles for the trip would be a curiosity; but as the mention in detail might olfend some of tho party, wt will only say they comprised a general variety of the animal, vegetable and mineral king doms, babies, dogs, fishing rods and cans pre dominating. We arrived at the river without rain, and firoceeded at once to fish. Wt didn't wait or ceremony, but waded right into the flood half on depth, where we remained aliout two hours, during which time we caught two tur tles and two bass. No one of the party was doing any better, indeed, not as well, for hut ine other lista was caught 111 the same time. I'hero was a continued rnin-threatcning all the day, the thunder was muttering sullenly in the north and cast, and for a time the wind was blowing a gain, making it almost Impossi ble to ply the rod, and rendering the eltort useless. We quit abont 1 1 o'clock, when a little (limb of rain drove us to cover, where we found the ladies had prepared a very tempt ing collation, and we determined to remain until it attractiveness had been lost upon our apiiotitc and we did. w e do not desire to go ovor the "old story, and tell yon of the laid luck we had in the af ternoon; how we lost onr biggest fish; how our liest bait were wasted by the cnulM inbhlinK them to pieces; how the turtles annoyed us, and how, just as wo were about to piny hob with the "tins," a signal was made for us to como into enmp! Shull we speak of this lat ter more fully? About 4 0 clock I. Al. we noticed that it was getting very dark, so durk we could nut see our line, and casting our eyes towards the clouds in the south-west the scene looked ter ribly grand. It seemed as though a tempest was approaching, and would soon overwhelm every tiling. Looking towards camp, whore we hiul left the pnrty fishing along tho bank, the place wus deserted, and we concluded to go and see what was the excitement On ar riving at the place, the whole party seemed to be panic-stricken; the ladies and children were huddled in the little toll house at the bridge, and the gentlemen were hastening to get their tenuis out of the woods. All was commotion, the hoarse winds howling through the forest: and threatening to hurl the ancient sycamores nliout our retreat! And in this confused con dition, our roils nnd lines tangled, baskets and clothing strewed about in the wagons, chil dren crying, dogs harking, etc., etc we start ed on our retreat from the river, a great deal mora liko a-rout than a return home from a very pleasant party. Had wo been Captain, wo would have culled a halt long enough to have permitted a change of clothes, and not es we did ridn some seven miles in clothing "wringing wet" A real tornudo would not have Irigiitened us half so bud as to prevent us preparing to die decently and comfortably. The storm (!) passed, and we got a little sprinkle of rain, only; no blow of any formida ble pretence, and nobody was hurt We have seen but few of the party since, and we do not know how they stood the racket A. T. T. did not exercise quito onough faith, and had not quito enough patience in his piscatorial pursuit We huve hopes of him, however, be cause he dresses the fisherman and seems diajiosed to learn, lly-tho-by, ho is a "glori ous irood fellow," and wears. IMkm. We don't want to allude to this fishing excursion again. It waa unsatisfoeUt- ry us a fiahnio, and it wound up so craxily. We don't believe any one of the party will own to having been to the river on Tuesday. This village woe settled about half a cen tury nuo by peoplo from Pennsylvania, prin cipally, the valley of Tulpehocken furnishing the greater numlier. A number ui new nouses nave been put up hero within the past' two years, aud tho work of improvement is still gmng on with a liberal hand.
