Correspondence of the Empire.
COLLINS HOUSE, TOLEDO,
December 27, 1862.
There are no localities in

' lians, io much u the Miami of the Lake, or
mouth of the Maumee rirer since the forma
tion of our State. During the War of 1812,
Fort Meigs, a lew miles north of thii, was
justly regarded as one of Our indst important
militarr dosU (or the protection of North
Western Ohio, and its tite ii still regarded
with great interest by eery person who rallies
the early history of Ohio,
At the close of tin war, ' enterprising and
far-seeing men predicted that the great Com
mercial metropolis of our State . would be'
located on the banks of the beautiful "Miami
of the Lake," but at what particular point no
' one at first was able to conjecture. ' Specula
tor! purchased all the land along the river
from the rapids to the Lake and laid out
, enough town lots to build a City aa large as
London. Maumee, Perrysburg, Vistula, Port
Lawrence, aad Manhattan, are some of the
names of the fowns which we. now recollect,
the proprietors of any one of which assured
the public that tbey had the only spot suitable
for a great City. Millions of money was
expended m the purchase of' these lots' 1 and
building docks to accommodate the commerce
of a great city. Maumee on the West bank
hd Perrysburg bo the East bank at the foot
of the rapids and at the bead of aavigation,
for a long time outstripped in growth all of
their competitors. Both become County seats,
the first of Lucas and the latter ot Wood
County and speculators invested- freely in
each. Some shrewd Yankees however de
. dared that ,hej wer both ttjd Jiar from the
Lake and the establishment, of a bank of issue
at Manhattan, whore any amount of money
could be procured Rave that place a notoriety
above all otbora. Its unexampled prosperity
was like all towns built with factitious capital
of short continuance. The bank failed and
with it hundreds of the inhabitants of Man
hattah. ....... - '
Vistula and Port Lawrence were finally
discovered to be the most eligible spots (or the
s coming -City and as they were close together
could soon be united. Men of wealth and
enterprise took hold of the project and in
. lew years bnillu the respectable and populous
city ot Toledo on Ibe sue oi Vistula ana
Lawrence. !
Toledo has grown with unprecedented rapid
ity and is destined to become the greatest
Commercial City on Lake Erie. It already
contains nearly twenty thousand'. Inhabitants
and is the second cram market in the world
and yet it is still surrounded by large tracts
of uncultivated land equal to anyin tne west.
It commands and always receives the grain
and lumber trade of au immeuse territory,
embracing that of the rich valleys of the
Wabash aud Miami. Its wholusule trade
already very extensive and some of the largest
Dry Uooda, Urocenea, Hardware, anu yueens
ware, houses in the Unu)ii,ar ict be found
here. Among other large nouses erected the
past summer is that of Mr. Henry Phillips
on Summit street. It has a front of forty
four foet on Summit and Water streets, four
stories high and is filled with agricultural
instruments, seeds, hardware, tVu. utner
capacious buildings intended lor stores' and
private dwellings are being erected and if
war was over and mechanics could be procur
ed no town in the West would grow au fast
Toledo. The Wabash and Miami cauult have
found employment tor nil their bouts to this
City during the past season and the Detroit,
Dayton and Michigan, Southern Michigan
and Cleveland Rail Roads have found it di
to obtain rolling stock to convey the
freight and pasrengers which concentrate
here. These rail roads never did aa well be
fore, the Dayton and Michigan having nearly
doubled its receipts during the pail .season.
A numerous lleet of Propellors and sailing
vessels have left daily for Dunkirk and liulfalo
fully freighted during ilia- past season and
navigation on the Lakes has Kept open until
a very lute period.
A number of enterprising merchants
mechanics from . Cinciunati and .yUm have
recently located - here. Among others
Shoemaker, who has built one of the most
commodious grain ware bouses oa the Lake.
It fronts on the Dayton and Michigan rail road
and river and bis elevators are so constructed
as to load and unload grain from boats
cars with the greatest dispateh vWalbridge,
the Kings and several other gentlemen have
alio extensive, grain; Vynrqhouaap (wjllv eleva
tors.
Barlow ATlioaaaaon,Queensware merchants,
O' Brian and Poe Wholesale Liquor merchants
from Dayton are doing an extensile
profitable business. O'Jlriau's A J'oe's Tonto
gony bitters are said to be equal to the Planta
tion or any other Hitters. . in '
The Opera House has furnished amuse-
. . menu for the City for a long time, but is
closed for repairs and will soon be re-opened.
A stretH' rail road ' running down Summit
street about three miles, does a fine business.
Every variety of IloUJa can be fuu nil
The Oliver House is a splendid building
retains its rank as . a first class Hotel.
old favorite the Collins House, kept by
ptenial. gentleman and. excellent landlord
Calhoun tarnished me with an excellent break
fust of Venison, buckwheat cakes, &r.
always get something good to eat, and a clean
bed at this house. .
