The Eighth of January Festival.

o'clock on Thursday morning, Mr. Follett

The Judiciary It earns its highest title to
distinction and to the gratitude of the nation,
when, in the midst of civil commotion it holds
. the scales of justice with an even hand, and
vindicates the Constitution against all as
saults. . . . ,,
Judge Ranney wee called "upott try respond
to this sentiment. He did it in a most mas
terly manner, as all do testify who were pres
ent. It is a theme he lores, and there, is ao
man in. Ohio better qualified to dtv-it justice.
We regret exceedingly, t!at we were not pres
ent to near the able, eloquent and logical
speech, that closed the exercises of this
grand celebration. '
The following volunteer toast was handed
us for Dublication :

the true Democracy coming into full charge,

With the rescued '"Constitution as it is, tand
the Union as it was." a new era of peace and
prosperity will bless the people,, , and to the
conservative Democracy all praise and glory

Projects of Peace!
, Gradually all the stories got up about-over-turas
of peace, made by the.Conlederate Gov
ernment to tbe Administration at Washington,
lode away. . Itis not true that the go-betweens,
who assume to negotiate, have been instructed
by tbe Davis Government, or are countenanc
ed by President Lincoln. It is equally untrue
that they bring letters to leading Democrats
ot the Worth, irom any antbentativetiuarter.
What is probably true is, that the masses
of the South are sick at heart.uf war.,, .They

tice and a peace of Separation. Failing iu
that, they look with some hope to the next
Congress for a peace iiixmv the basis of a
Restoration.
All this, however, ia vague and indefinite,
and being founded upon .the opinions ot dos
ses outside of the (Jovernment, will vary,
probably, with the lortunes ol the war.
We believe that the .North wishes peace
upon the basis ol the Union restored, and the
Constitution as it was before the war broke
out. We believe the masses of the South
entertain the same wish. What stands in the
way of its accomplishment?' Who form the
barrier, on the Northern or Southern side,
winch prevents the re-union r i:
That is the most serious question which
the people North and South will have to con
sider. When they commence its considera
tion, then will the prospect of. peace begin.
We never heard of thirty millions of people
who could be Kept at war against their, own

Awful and Solemn Death.
The Scotch papers,',reportj aWVaofideni,
which, though it involvod only one life, con
tains more of the true element . of horror,
strikes more sharply on the fine cords of hu
man terror, than many a great and meaning
ness castastrophc. Thomas Loch, a dock la
borer, was working on a ship, just beached
near Wigtown, when aha keeled over, and the
bulwark fell on his chest The tide was fast
coming np, and it was evident that, in, an hoar
the wretctied mat would be drowned, unless
the weight could be removed from his chest.
All the place turned out to help, but the weight
was immovable, and tbe tide bowed on rsv
snorselessly. A clergyman , stepped forward
into the water and prayed with tbe the unban-
or victim. A nankin was. at his own renuesL
placed over his face that he might not see
the tide, and so, apparently without complaint,
he lay till the water closed over his head;
while; tbe townsmen gathered around in help
lessness, soonest aioua.
Winter Fashions in Washington.

"Tbe fashions this winter aire very comical,
the height of the ladies' bonnets being abso
lutely ridiculous. Large white muslin bows,
with Ince-trimmed ends, are Worn instead of
breast-Dins on cloaks and walking-dresses.
This has the effect of making ladies look quite
ministerial. Cloaks are pretty much all long
sacks, aud braided trimmings are moat tn
favor. Friazled hair is all the rage. Ladies
cut their lovely locks about four inches lonir,
and curl them at night over the forehead and
close to the head. The curls are all combed
through in a mass next morning, and stand
out like a darkey's- hair, -precisely. I have
seen many a dark-skinned woman try as hard
to get the kink ot( of her buir, as jour ladies
try to get it in."
A Touch of the Pathetic.

his brush, turned a laughing child in a paint
ing to one crying ; and our mothers, with
out being great painters have often brought
us, in like manner, from joy to grief by a sin
