and find it an excellent article. We tried it
with lampblack ground in raw oil. Wefouud
that for these two colors we bad to use
lurcer proportion of drier than tbat reconj.
mended by Mr. Coale, but for others colors
we found tbe quantity- (one eight) quite
enough to dry them thoroughly. Practical
painters know tbat a Japau tbat will dry lamp
black and Vandyke brown will dry any other
color that it is put into. We therefore have
uo hesitation in recommending it to tbe
trade and to tbe public generally.

Uall, on next Tburaday night, to be given for

ing a library for the use of the Company. Tbe
object is a good one, aud we hop the Ball
will be a success, John Ueoguagie will give
a splendid supper at 12 o'clock; and he will
have refreshments there. Of course there
will be a good tim generally.'

That Murder. It'ia very seldom' murder
is committed in this city or its surroundings

midst creates an intense ' excitement , On
Thursday night tbe Eastern part of town waa
electrified by the report that a woman and
her child had been foully murdered in their
home, on the Hill. And, yesterday morning
the startling rumor waa circulating on this
side of the Canal, spreading consternation in
every direction.
On our way to the Office, early yesterday
morning, several persons met us and enquir
ed if we'd "heard of ill" and before we had
time to reply, they congratulated us on
length having "an item that's , worth print
ing j" hoped we'd "visit the seen -of horror,"
get all the particulars, and "spread it on
thick I" .-. .. t .. .... ,
No one knew much about it; but jfhe Item
upon which it seemed so desirable - that we
should exhaust our descriptive abilities waa

On Thursday evening a villainous looking
man called at the house of a soldier, o . the
Hill, and enquired if he was at home. The
soldier's wife and her two children a boy
four, and a girl of two years--were . in the
room, aud when the fellow atcertaiaed that
no man was in the bouse, he ordered the boy
to leav room. The mother becoming1 alarm
ed caught op the little girl and tried to es
cape, but the villain caught her, and they had
a desperate struggle, during which the wo
man screamed murder several times, and lb
wretch doubtless fearing that he woe Id
interrupted choked her to death, and then
crushing the child's head with a hatchet,
made his escape just aa the neighbors who
heard her acream, were approaching the

Such was I lie story. We lost no time
huuting the police. They bad tracked the
story "down to a bole ;" and, reader, what
you auppoae was the origin of That Murder

er about it The mother got mad, took the
part of her children, and called th fellow

away remarking lhal he'd twist "all if their
necks if tbey didu't let him alone I A neigh

galed her family with a highly-colored narra
tion of it at th teaAabl, winding np ritb th
remark that "th (allow looked mad enough
to a' choked her to death I"
Two boys at th table heard all that was
said, and more tool And, they went out
and circulated the terrible tragedy wbicb bad
so nearly put the nevoua people of our city

The petite comedy of "Faint Heart never

bound. The soldier of fortune, Ruy Gomez,
represented by Mr. 'Stoddard,' was a perfect
gem of acting, and elicited tbe most hearty
applause. The Marquis Deaanta Crus, by Mr.
Weaver, was the personibcation ot ui entity

politician, and bis wavering between lov and
honor was Indicrons in the extreme. Mrs.
Finite was king Charles, and her representa
tion of the careless, light hearted boy, and
embiero king, was graceful and natural : Mrs.
Sloddard as th Duchess, was excellent. ' Th
rest of the character were all tbat could be
wished.
"Bingen on the Rhine" was given by Mr.
Lewis in a truly artistic' style. The "Swiss
Swains" was received with roars-r-pfoof snffi'
cient that it was well acted. ' ..
The farce of th "Dead Shot" was a per
fect bijou of fun, and sent everybody bom in
a good humor, Mrs. Stoddard, Mrs. risks
Mr. Weaver, Mr. Durt, Mr.' Lewis and ' Mr.
Wilson comprised the cast. . Need we say
more?
Tbe entertainment to-niglit comprises the

On Monday night "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

Echo. The other morning a lady went to
the Depot with ber son a little fellow aged
about five years for the purpose of taking
th early train. The attention of th little
boy was directed to a dog, which was play
ing at the opposite side of the Depot, and
he called the, doa ,'t com, to bim. , We pre
sume many of onr readers bave remarked th
cavernous sounds the Depot give forth when
the train is not there with Its rumbling, and
tbe place is almost , deserted by the noisy
throng who are there about traia lime, when
the almost solitary voice or footstep is beard.
Th child heard the peculiar . echo. The re
ply to hi call seemed to come from the cross
ties of the building, in tbe dusky space far
above his head ; and as th tantalizing mock
ery was repeated as often as he called, the
littl chap was annoyed, and he asked in an
indignant tone 5
"Ma, who's tbat up yonder hollerin' at me
all the time T'
, "Up where, my child 7' .
.. "Why, way up yonder, Mai" pointing to
the ceiling "It's some body up there a hol
lerin' at me when I call the doggy, and h
won't come to me, Ma !"
."Ob, th nois you bear is the echo, my son.
Don't mind iu" ' .
Tbe little fellow looked intently at th ceil
ing for a moment, and. then shaking his fiat
towards his imaginary antagonist he said
"Ah, bal Mr. Echo! if you don't quit that
I'll make th dog bite yon when you come
down I ah, ha I"
, , But Echo didn't com down before th oars
started, and th littl bap didn't get hit re
venge.'"'1 ","
The Weather At this time just so
