If he don't visit us he will be pretty generally con demned liy the admirers of the genuine Plan tation Opera. Climetary. A most desperate and ill-requited effort to snow was made this morning. The disposition to do so was readily acuepted for the performance. In the mean time this is the bleakest style of weather we have been favored with this season. We will except the nights, which are really mild and beautiful; and they serve to put in stronger and more unpleasant contrast the unseemly days. The "winter of our discontent" is likely tn prove lengthened dreariness long drawn out ' Drawer Thieves We hear nearly every day of the operations of Drawer Thieves,' in different parts of the city. They watch their chance when the back of a merchant or gro cery keeper in turned, they adroitly manage to rob their money drawers. ' The other day one of these small-villains got ten dollars from the drawer of Duff k Anderson while the proprietors were momentarily absent from the store room. Heard from. What he cannot effect In the various directions we have indicated no one else can.' ' ' ' ' A Delightful Surprise The Pacific Fire Company held their regular monthly meeting last night, at their beautiful Hall on East Fifth street Wben the Company had aboat completed the business, .the door open ed and a large number of ladies entered the Hall in procession. They were handsomely dressed, were masked, and carried baskets oa their arms ; and they also brought with thsin a band of musicians I - The gallant 6' were rather astonished by this sudden and formidable display of crino line, but they tendered their mysterious visi tors seat, and awaited a statement of the programme. , A few words sufficed to inform the gentlemen that the ladies their wives, sisters, sweethearts, and friends I had come lo agreeably surprise them, and change the usual monotony of their meetings into a de lightful Terpsichorean divertisement I The baskets contained good cheer with 1 which the company could be regaled when the pleasing exercise of the fleeting hours would make a resort to their contents desirable I . ..;, The floor was soon, cleared of the furniture, the music (Welled oat into favorite cotillons, and the festive party the fair masks . and wondering partners beat time to the music until near midnight, when the "calls" ceased, and the welcome interlude ' was devoted to a superb lunch which the ladies had prepared for the occasion.' 'And 'tnen the ladies un masked, and the gentlemen ascertained "who was which i" aad then the fua was fairly be gual . , j i i ; . ' .". ' ' ' ' But we have not space to detail the "good time" which was kept up until "the wee sow' 1 hours." A more delightful occasion was nev er gotten up here that's aura., Ab1, it will, be remembered witn'pleasure by the partici pants as long a they shall hie. . j i . Beckel Hill A large and fashionable' audience was present last night to witness the fine comedy of "Kvery Body's Friend," one of those peculiar plays that was written on purpose to please every body. And those who saw it last night will be sure lo go to night The fine part of "Felix Featherly" 1. e : every body's friend was played natur ally and spiritedly by Mr. Lewis. The part was a perfect success. Mr. Si odder t as "Frank Icebrook," created a great deal of merriment by his excellent rendition of the character1. 1 "Major Wellington De Boole," by Mr. Weaver, was played in that unotions style which is so characteristic of this gentleman's performances, and his make up in the charac ter was perlecL Mrs. Fiske, as "Mrs. Feath erly," surpassed herself. , Mrs. Btoddart as "Mrs. Swanilowu," was our idea of that hap py, independent being, a widow. Mrs. Weaver as "Mrs. De Boots, was exactly fitted to .the character, "Fauiiy," by Miss May Howard was all that could be wished. In fact, the whole cast was so perfect it could hot fail to please the most exacting. ' ' , "The Omnibus" concluded the performance and, we must say we never saw it perlormed with so much spirit, or received with so much delight Messrs. Weaver, Lewis, Ilymes, and Mrs. Weaver, and Mias May Howard, were unapproachable in their several roltt. We journeyed to our domcil with aching sides. To-night "Kvery Body's Friend," and the "Object of Interest will comprise the bill ; and if plays draw according to their merits we expect to see the hou."e full to overflowing, This is positively the last week of the Star Troupe, and we advise our readers net to miss a night; fur it will be some time before onr city will be visited by such a company, and we had better make the most of our time while they are here, and see every thing they play. , The Great Book The Prospectus for a Great Book ia now being - circulated in this community by the Canvassing Agent, W.
