PICKET SKIRMISHES—FOSTER
CAPTURED.
N'rw Yohs, April 16. Advice from Suf
folk Virginia, 14th, state that our pickets were
driven in on the morning oitbeLtlb. Skir
mishing endued in sight of our breastworks.
Tbo enemy is erecting fortification on the
left bauk of the Nausemond river, four mils
trom Suffolk. Seven of our gunboat shelled
the rebels, compelling them to abandon them.
Another skirmish eusued in the afternoon,
and we drove the enemy to the wood '
All houses aflordmg positions for rebel
sharpshooters have been destroyed.
During the night we erected new tortifica
dons and in t'm morning of the 14th the gun
boats shelled the woods wherever the enemy
was likely be.
A relH deserter report the capture of n
whole garrison at Washington, N. C , num
bering 2,000. Report disbelieved
The deserter also reported the rebels in
front of Suffolk numbered 35,000, with eight y
pieties uf artillery.
The morning of tbn 14th the rebel ertilltrt
opened from the direction of Soroertowo. Out
lorts responded and the enemy changed poei
tion. The tiring hutted an hour, when th
rebels fell back a mile; bat again advanced
and firing on both aides was renewed, and di'
not cease till 10 o'clock, hone ou our sid
were killed or seriously wounded.

return ot Spinola's command from the at
ttmpl to relieve Washington. Be found the
enemy in grent force, and had skirmishes at
Blount's and Ruffs mills 10 men wounded.
SOUR GRAPES FOR THE REBELS.

It is announced on high authority that the
enrollment and conscription will be enforced
in May.
Evidence has been received that the enemy
on the Rappahannock is rapidly reinforcing
his army.
Deserters report the number of troop less
Iban at any previous time since Lee com
manded. The new Court here has issued writ for
the return of of negroes to slavery, claimed
by loyal owners and fugitive.

port that 5000 French reinforcements reached
Vera Cruz on the 20th ult.
