most cheerful and hopeful condition

dent of the Herald with the 1st army corps,
dated on the 1st stale ibat the rebels made
ona ot two daabef yesterday, driving in our
picket. On the evening previous the rebel
opened heavy with shot and shell on our in
trenching orcet, but received spirited respon
ses from our batteries.

FROM FREDERICKSBURG.
Nkw York. May . The Time correspon

corps took a position on th night previous ou
the left, and the 3d corps reached tha front
about noon ; tba position then occupied

road securely, a country road leading

Dispatches captured yesterday from Gen.
Lee to an engineer officer dated tha 29tb,
say he i much surprised at th movement,
had not anticipated it, and not prepared
give instruction. ,
About noon a movement wa made to endeavor
to bring out the enemy and compel
him to develop hi strength. Our men enter
ed tha field with much enthusiasm. Only
on regiment of cavalry first charging on th
rebel infantry, lattei driving our back re
peatedly, when a (mall force of infantry, sup
ported by cavalry, checking th rebels, our
Division under Byke and a rebel Division
under Anderson, then became engaged. Our
troop drov the rebel from two ridge par
rel Isl with th Rappahannock, gaining a mile
and fifty prisoners, when Hooker ordered
then to retire, not wishing to bring on
general engagement. Th rebel mistook onr
retirement for a check and followed rapidly
ou top of the first ridge. Th rebel balled
a moment and giving a yell, came down on
double quick but war met by Sykea Division,
who poured in a terrible fire of artillery
short ranga Contest lasted of an hour,
and extended across tba road where were
twenty two of our guns . which shelled
woods effectually and tba rebel ignominious
ly retired. During the atternoou the rebel
made several attempt on our line, but were
reuuleed
At 6. HO P. M. they made a despeiata charge
against a battery commanding the Plank
Road to Fredericksburg, but were handsome
ly repulsed by Geary, assisted by Knapp's
Hampton's Batteries, who double-shotted their
gun with grape and cannister. During
