Baton Hogue, and clouds of mounted partian
rangers hover along the river on the right
bank from Dnnuldsvillo to the mouth of Red
Hiver, and on the left batik from liuton Kogiie,
and olten below that point to Natchez and be
yond. Uen. Ilerron'a Division at Morganzia, or
Morgan's bund, on the right bank of the river,
about twenty-live miles above Port Hudson,
had been engaged for several days in skir
mishing with a body, as they supposed, of
guerrillas. The rebels becoming more daring
and annoying, Gen. Dana, now in cemmand
ol He rron division, sent out u number of re
giments to feel the enemy, and ascertain his
strength. Tbe enemy was felt, and proved
himself much to strong for the forcu sent
against them, and a suvere engagement en
sued, resulting in a loss to the I'nion army ot
aeveral hundred killed and wounded, and of
oma 1,500 prisoners.

aive, aud are pressing Davis' meu with such
vigor that the gunboats have been called in

All the sugar houses and all other structures
standing in the way, have bepn leveled to tbe
ground but it is reported that still tbe gun
boats can be of little service, owing to thu ou-
inn-rous bluffs iu thai vicinity. The rebels are
still there and will do great mischief if Geu
ral Davia is not reinforced. This body ot
Confederates ii said to under the command
uf Prince Holignac, now ltoigadier Geuerul
in the provisional army of tlm Confederate
States.

reliel surgeons were consequently held.
