Military Academy under the patronage of the
Commonwealth is urged. The total of, men
furnished to the land service by Massachusetts

can furuish volunteers tor our armies, and oth
er communities can afford to pay them to

to allow their balance to be adjusted by the
law of supplies and demand, Governor An
drew closed as follows : The great proclama

With the exception of McNeil's company,
which is several miles hack of Morefield, thnre
is no force of rebels near Petersburg. The
report at MoorefieM, yentenUy afternoon, was
that Kitihugh I.re's rebel lorccs bad beon or
dered to Winabeater. The present rebel ruid
wua a complete: failure, and was all attributed

dition, the roads. General Karly's object wus
to attack New Creek, but owing to late storms,

was buried to-day from ait. Patricks Cathe
dral. , High Mass was celebrated by Bishop
Timoo ot Buffalo Bishop McCloskey pro
nounced the funeral discourse. Hundreds of
Catholic Clergy were present, and the Cathe
dral waa crowded to its utmost limit. After
the ceremonies his body was interred in a
tomb under the Cathedral, with improssivu re
ligious exercises.

SENATORS AGAINST THE REPEAL
OF THE $300 CLAUSE.
Washinotox, January 8 The WorlJe dis
patch says that the Senate debated on the
Conscription Act most of th day bat cam
to rio oouclusion on any amendment. But
on .Senator favored the r.-peal of the300 ex
emption clause, while all others who spoke op
posed such a repeal
The indications are that not two-thirds of
th Senators favor it repeal. During the de
bate on the bill in the Senate to day an impor
tant tact turn out, that the enlistment of
ouly 20.0U0 veterans eipir before next July
in an our armies.
Several delegations are here representing
the tobacco, whisky, petroleum and other in
terests, wb will be heard before the ootniuit
tee next week. 1 he committee will not be
able to report on the tax bill for some time.

TAX ON WHISKY—PAYMENT OF
SEVEN-THIRTIES.
Washington, Jan. S. The Tribune' $ spec
ial says '.he Committed of Ways and Means
is in session to day engaged on ennsiaering
amendments to the Internal Revenue Hill,
staled that if the Committee advance the tax
on whisky ouly to the figures recommended
by the Secretary and Commissioner, via: sixty
per cent, per gallon, as at latest advices they
were disposed to do, an effort will be made
in the House to add forty per cent, making
one dollar per gallon.
General Hancock, who has just assamed
command of the Second Corps, ia ordered to
report to tho War Department, and General
warren agiun placed in command of the
corps under a decision of Secretary Chase,
the payment nf the 7-30 Treasury notes, will
be made in legal currency ot the United
States, unless resumption of specie paymeut
takes place beliire that time. Sshould boldnrs
lesire they can convert notes into six per
cent bonds, the interest and principal of
which is payable in coin.

gives an interesting account ot the expodi-

released from bondage. With them were ta
ken about 3i0 horses and mule tennis, and
about 75 saddle horses. The guerrillas lost,
thirteen killed and wounded Ten dwellings
with many thouiand bushels of corn were
burned, besides two distilleries Four reliel
camps destroyed and one guerrilla hung, IO0II
rilles, lot of uniforms and equipments fell into
our nnnda. Our loss was twelve killed and
wounded, and one Utknu prisoner. Wu
brought in fourteen rebel prisoner! ami four
hoblugos.
